Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Running Chicken Nebula
apod.nasa.gov — Bright nebulae abound in and around the expansive southern constellation of Centaurus. This one, cataloged as IC 2948 is near the star Lambda Centauri and not far on the sky from the better known Eta Carinae Nebula.

- kdfrawg, on 04/18/2008, -2/+4I have to say, I find the name to be striking. ;o)
- yojiffyskippy, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1I was expecting an article from theonion.
- brandonhardee, on 04/18/2008, -2/+2i don't understand whats the hurry
- ubuwalker31, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2It's trying to cross the road....
- ELLIS1128, on 04/18/2008, -4/+16I don't see it.
- BufordT, on 04/18/2008, -2/+2Anyone who really wants to see the name explained in picture form go to this link and click the running_chicken_final_2a_sa.jpg link in the last post. The catch is that you have to register at bad astronomy and universe today forum to see it. i just registered, and it was pretty simple.
http://www.bautforum.com/astrophotography/29546-ru ... - bonedead, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2It's a sailboat.
- epmc, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1It's a schooner!

- bobbybebob, on 04/18/2008, -6/+1It looks pretty good. I think this one looks a little better tho http://uploadingit.com/view/536077_rk6gh
- antlerboy, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1out of focus with blue filter? nah...
- scott12087, on 04/18/2008, -1/+5It looks more like an eagle, but I'm sure the name "Running Eagle Nebula" is already taken. Plus, Running Chicken just sounds so much cooler.
- solarwind24, on 04/18/2008, -6/+4These guys seriously need to give their site a Web 2.0 lift. The content is there, but the style isn't.
At least it's not the other way around like some sites...- BufordT, on 04/18/2008, -2/+6I agree that it is a very plain site, but the whole point of the site is pictures of the cosmos. It is simple and to the point, enough so that it makes it to the front page of Digg every few days. It would be nice to manage a website who's maintenance consisted of a couple of daily jpeg uploads.
- S2000, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2Buried your comment for serious usage of "Web 2.0"
- draftingtableX, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1Couldn't disagree more, I think it should remain pretty much exactly as-is.
- yojiffyskippy, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1So what you're saying is that you complain about all websites that don't have "content" and "Web 2.0" fluff? That would be the vast majority of websites. You must complain uh-lot! Instead of complaining about the 99% of websites that don't meet your standards, you should compliment the 1% that does meet your standards. That way you'll have a lot more free time to leave wonderfully insightful digg comments.
- JivePode, on 04/18/2008, -6/+0I always struggle to be amazed by these. I mean, in theory, it's amazing; all those stars, infinite space and the very real possibility of life out there, but I can't shake the feeling that I could've made that on Photoshop if I put the effort in.
- Stupidumb, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3You could have created a representation on Photoshop, but I doubt you could have actually created the nebulae in space using Photoshop (That plug-in will be released Q1 next year)
- JivePode, on 04/18/2008, -1/+0Heh, I even dugg you up for that. Obviously I meant that the image was replicable rather than the universe, but I think that was implied. To all those digging me down: I apologise for being underwhelmed by some pixels on a screen; I find space itself absolutely fascinating. These daily NASA images just leave me cold.

- ivosilva, on 04/18/2008, -4/+11Insert a joke about a chicken crossing the universe here.
- Stupidumb, on 04/18/2008, -3/+2No
- yojiffyskippy, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2Why did the chicken cross the universe?
- Stupidumb, on 04/18/2008, -3/+3No
- ThreeDee912, on 04/19/2008, -1/+2Yes
- Stupidumb, on 04/18/2008, -3/+3No
- ryanscottdavis, on 04/18/2008, -2/+0more like a turkey gobbler...
- JustGrant, on 04/18/2008, -8/+2A new frontpage image from Nasa every day... buried.
- Wartyboskfapped, on 04/18/2008, -2/+2OK, they're running out of names for these nebulae, right?
- TrancePX, on 04/18/2008, -2/+4I don't see it. Can someone outline it for me?
- antipoet, on 04/18/2008, -0/+11Yeah, I enhanced the contrast a little: http://stashbox.org/104318/chicken.jpg

- twiztidsinz, on 04/18/2008, -3/+2Why'd the galactic chicken nebula cross the vast expanses of space?
- myststrngr, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5To destroy the origin of bad jokes.
- twiztidsinz, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3No... TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE SILLY!
- Emmo213, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2There's sides to space?
- com2, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2There has to be a beginning & end to everything .
- twiztidsinz, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1Sides are relative.... spheres (for example, the earth) have sides: "he flew from one side of the globe to the other"
- myststrngr, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5To destroy the origin of bad jokes.
- MikeJohnson1981, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3Anybody notice the floating stuff in the foreground? Top of the photo.
- MLisa, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1Looks like they need to clean the lens. lol
- CosmicSombrero, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2Those would be Bok globules - dense, opaque fragments of a molecular cloud.
- MikeJohnson1981, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1thanks
- katana346, on 04/18/2008, -0/+0Those are lord Xenus intergalactic cruisers seeking out new planets to dump thetans on.
- nomurder, on 04/18/2008, -0/+0I'm sure that those are only 1o,ooo lightyears away...
- mkay2008, on 04/18/2008, -6/+1Load of *****.
- 3leggedHorse, on 04/18/2008, -2/+4I don't see a chicken.
- mrhaines, on 04/18/2008, -5/+1Q. Why did the Chicken Nebula run across the intergalactic space?
A. To get to the other galaxy. - Hayes, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1I see it. Its tongue is stocking out the side, too. ahahahha
- LeggoMyEgo, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1YOU'RE the chicken nebula. KAW-KA KAW-KA KAW.
- Hayes, on 04/18/2008, -4/+1It's easier to see when looking at a smaller picture, but here's the outline for people who can't see it. http://www.revolustream.com/ic2948_crouch.jpg
- antipoet, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3Wha? I thought it was more like this: http://stashbox.org/104327/chicken2.jpg
- fxu1989, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1I thought it was like this
http://i26.tinypic.com/n2k4tf.jpg- 91z4me, on 04/18/2008, -0/+0I think i just got Dick Rolled!
- jboettcher, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2Dugg for the name alone.
- leerayIG88, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1Now they just need a KFC logo on the side.
- mtnlion2, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3wait... okay there it is.
- prleet, on 04/18/2008, -1/+0I see the egg but no hen.
- yojiffyskippy, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2That's funny. It doesn't look like a chicken to me. It looks like my mother beating as a child, wrapping duct tape around my hands and locking me in the basement...... oh wait ..... never mind. I see it now.
- tails5280, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2Dang. Does anybody else see a face? Because I sure do.
- Scynet, on 04/18/2008, -1/+4And the closer you look, the more evident the face is. I hate it, that's why I don't use very reflective monitors.
- fluxion, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1i thought the face was the reason for the name? the face looks like a chicken's face while it is exerting itself in some way (running?)
or is there something else going on there?
- nomurder, on 04/18/2008, -0/+0jeeeeeze
this is so my desktop background. - riceyrice, on 04/19/2008, -1/+0!Y!A!W!N!- If we cared that much about these stupid-arse astronomy pics, we'd go to that site. No need to pollute DIGG with such repetitive, nonsensical, bull$h!t3.
just a thought.
