- SteelChicken, on 05/09/2008, -0/+18more budget
- BigManOnCampus, on 05/08/2008, -2/+11It could be Planet X.
SETI wasn't looking for an object, they were looking for a signal.
Maybe they found direct evidence of a black-hole or it's highly-visible accretion disk?
They did say they used the Chandra X-Ray observatory, and finding black-holes is one thing it could do well. - brisbin33, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6NASA began Oct 1, 1958. what have they been looking for since day one?
- RogerStrong, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5My money is on a discovery about the "missing mass" in the universe - what form at least some of it takes.
- nwoantibody, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5Key individuals in Nasa have known about things you'll probably never question in your entire life. They publish certain documents you never read, thus, your input on scientific developments is restrained to these "public speeches", and in your realm of thought, nothing outside of these speeches exist.
Too many people see things live, but don't believe it until they watch it on the news at night. - somon90, on 05/08/2008, -2/+6Probably just something like a a neutron star collision or something similar...
Aliens would be way cooler though.. - StaticThunder, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3What, a hole with a event horizon the size of a golf-ball? It would have to be right on top of us for Chandra to see that.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3the moon?
- rccarter, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I can't get the audio stream to work. :(
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -2/+4They've found the lost astronaut's glove.
- StaticThunder, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3We've seen that indirectly - stars whipping around something dark, x-ray emitting and incredibly massive.
There's even a time lapse of the stars orbiting it in Sagittarius but I can't remember what to google for to call it up. - EdSG, on 05/09/2008, -3/+5I would put my money on the super-massive black hole on the center of our galaxy, pure speculation, but it would be really cool!
- FanofFilm, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1that's exactly what the release says
- SteelChicken, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2I think nasa.gov fell into a black hole
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2An object could be an alien spaceship, a doom-day asteroid, a black hole, a worm hole, second Earth, or Planet X.
What's got to do with x-ray? It must be a black hole. Direct x-ray images of a black hole will be publicized. - ozymandias2012, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3I don't know what they'll announce but it's definitely NOT going to be about aliens.
- AlwaysAwake, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1CONTACT !! With what ? The Observer is the Observed.( David Bohm/ J.Krishnamurti ) It's only me again.
- nights0223, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Is this what you are looking for?
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0012/SgrA_sharp_bi ... - EvilAnimator, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2They found V-ger headed our way. We're boned.
- BigManOnCampus, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2except they haven't been specifically looking for that for 50 years, but I'll admit its a good possibility
- zplot, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2It could be a lot of things. I think there was some recent report (read something on BadAstronomyBlog) about a new discovery in dark matter. I might not agree with the title, but Dugg because whatever this announcement is, it'll probably be big.
- StaticThunder, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Actually, this video:

from this page

Look at how quick that star turns. Wow. - StaticThunder, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2Wait, no, I've got it. The x-ray flash from a sunlike protostar igniting its proton-proton chain. Thats something chandra was built to study, and they've wanted to see for a long time.
- StaticThunder, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Another earth-like planet and a better rocket engine. But this is an x-ray observatory; it isn't those.
- wubblie, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1My guess: the event horizon of the black hole at the center of our galaxy.
- fjavier, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0If we add, that Vatican http://digg.com/world_news/Vatican_Hedges_Bets_Say ... then we have that...
They are preparing us to contact alien... but i'am sure that aliens are they self with alien technology prepared to try dominate us... lol
We already know that alien exists and we already know that some ancient cultures as Mayan talk about a planet or something coming to the earth in 2012. They had a better calendar than we have.
I am not afraid, I am not surprised and I am prepared to fight against any martial law that government can use to try dominate us. - sgiffy, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2I think its astronomers that have been hunting, not just NASA.
- Sapsucker, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Hmmmm....it just so happens we're coming up to the 50th anniversary of NASA eh? Far too convenient. I call shenanigans. They found it a while ago and have been holding onto it. Cue: Stewie Griffin fantasy cutscene.
- Sapsucker, on 05/14/2008, -2/+2You're far too trusting NASA. Dantooine is too remote to make an effective demonstration - but don't worry; we will deal with your rebel friends soon enough.
- imacommi, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Xenu?!?!
- emeraldclaw4, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1space nazis they probably found space nazis. we are all *****
- StaticThunder, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1I have no idea, preon star is best bet, since its something noone has ever seen.
- A11YND, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2They finally found Major Tom :(
- Elrin, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2Could be the ball from one of David Beckhams penalties
- Rocketman1882, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1They found the Gräfenberg spot!
- StaticThunder, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1Of course it would also turn particle physics on its ear, so I don't think they'd be waiting so long to announce it and it would be extremely controversial that the hot x-ray emitting softball in our backyard was in fact a preon star.
- wonderchemist, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Planetary mass black hole?
- EdSG, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1You're right, probably not for 50 years... these will be 6 very, very long days!
- uptown, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1They finally located Waldo.....
- sgiffy, on 05/10/2008, -3/+1huh?
- halogenic, on 05/13/2008, -3/+0Probably ignition keys for Apollo 13
- pafboy, on 05/09/2008, -4/+1yeah some space trash coming back for us (Futurama anyone)
