- tomboy501, on 03/30/2008, -1/+42I kept looking at the edges of the shot, waiting for the curvature of Earth to come into view. It delivers, just at the end. Nice video.
- DeskFlyer, on 03/30/2008, -0/+28Here's onboard video of an SRB's trip back to Earth after it jettisons (even has audio): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8azRu2stO4

A view of the External Tank after separation - Need to be patient. Really gets good about 2:28 into video and again when the ET goes into the darkside orbit of Earth. - Awspire, on 03/30/2008, -1/+18Friggin amazing. Felt kinda bad for the camera man, though.
- ummmmm, on 03/30/2008, -1/+18I'm not gonna lie...that was pretty awesome!
- MoofTheStoof, on 03/30/2008, -0/+11How in the world are there still flat-earthers out there?
- Roguecop, on 03/30/2008, -0/+10Smashing! A rare Youtube vid where I'm not making a mad stab at the mute button because some bleeding barmcake can't understand why any one would not want to hear his favorite thrash metal band at 50 decibels . Absolutely ticketebo, lads.
- Dimalinch, on 03/30/2008, -0/+8Well I am going to lie, I thought it was terrible :D
- romistrub, on 03/30/2008, -1/+8One of the best angles, in my opinion (on the Rocket Booster). Set to music from Boards of Canada. Seen by me in the comments on Reddit. http://snm.imeem.com/video/qMFlJe6m/shuttle_liftof ...
- SoundJudgment, on 03/30/2008, -0/+6In-friggin' CREDIBLE. The sounds and sight of the plummet all the way down to the very last seconds... capturing the landing of not only itself, but its companion unit and its 'chute hitting the water only a short distance away. Totally a winner.
- aaron4, on 03/30/2008, -0/+6i will never be an astronaut :(
- inactive, on 03/30/2008, -0/+5about 2 minutes in is when I felt really small.
- SillyDigger, on 03/30/2008, -0/+5This is how they retrieve those rockets http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTgfm7n22-w
- Boognish, on 03/30/2008, -0/+5I have been waiting over 20 years to see a shot like that. That just made my ***** day!
- catachip, on 03/30/2008, -0/+4It's neat how you can see the water come pouring in underneath the engines just before they ignite. I always thought that was to cool things down under there, but, turns out its to absorb that sound vibrations that would otherwise reflect back off the concrete and destroy the launch vehicle itself.
- wavesmachine, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4"Cornel, you better take a look at this radar... "
"what is it son."
"I dunno, but it looks like a giant..."
"Dick!, take a look out of starboard"
"Oh My God, it looks like a huge..."
"Pecker! wait, that's not a pecker, it looks like someone's..."
"Privates! We have reports of an unidentified flying object. It is a long smooth shaft complete with..."
"Two Balls! what is that? that looks just like an enormous..."
"Wang! Pay attention!"
"I was distracted by that enormous flying..."
"Willie! look at that"
"Wow, it looks like a giant..."
"Weiner!, any of your kids what another weiner?"
"Dad, what's that?"
"I dunno son, but it's got great big..."
"Nuts! hot salty nuts! who want's some.... Lord almighty"
"That looks just like my husbands..."
"One eyed monster!, Step riight up and see the one eyed monster..."
"RAHHHH! hey what's that it looks like a big..."
"Woodie!, Woodie Haroldson, can I have your autograph?"
"Sure, no problem, Oh My Lord, look at that thing"
"It's so big"
"No I've seen bigger, that's..."
"Just a little prick..." - OfF3nSiV3, on 03/30/2008, -0/+4anyone noticed how big the shadow of the smoke column is ?
you could see it from space - krische, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3Under those G-forces, you only feel yourself being pulled back into your seat. There is upside down or rightside up.
- skmice2, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3Thanks for sharing - this one is equally great as the original video above.
What got me a lot surprised is how little was the motion of the ext. tank influenced by venting of the surplus gas. It looks like a huge burst which should get the ET into a quick spin, but I guess that it just looks that big as the gas freely spreads in the vacuum and its actual released energy is just not enough to influence the motion of the tank. - theurge14, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3Wow, thanks for that!
- catachip, on 03/30/2008, -1/+4Yikes. You know that video was posted 2 years ago. Many other videos from that same perspective have been on youtube for even longer. A simple search would have showed you them.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3That's ***** cool.
- overridemymind, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3The whole venting thing is pretty sweet. Here's one of the external boosters or whatever they're called falling away from the orbiter/fuel tank assembly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm1Fva68EUk&feature ... - EdmontonEh, on 03/30/2008, -1/+3Classy... Douche-bag
- Bukowsky, on 03/30/2008, -1/+3That was pretty sweet... and kinda therapeutic at the same time.
- BossKey, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2That's the same as saying Columbus never should have sailed.
- theboozer, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2Friggin' awesome!
- KaJuN4, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Well not with that attitude you won't!
- Achilles2, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2That money would most likely never get to them. It would be use for other thing such as the War on Terror or some ***** like that.
- m1zl3d, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2Yeah that was really awesome. Especially the end where the rocket booster plummets back to Earth and splashes into the ocean. Really amazing. :D
- Intamin, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1$20 million. :)
Bank on the private space industry or Russia--NASA's probably not gonna do that for a very long time.
We can all hope though! - SLockhart, on 03/30/2008, -1/+2In Canada they showed that video live on the news.
- Tex3d, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1Incredible how fast it actually is...
- tfox2k1, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1Its a shame more money hasn't been invested into space exploration. That could be our monthly commute to work.
- MizzouSteven, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Did anyone else see a slight rotation of the ground below the shuttle?
Is that from the shuttle slightly rotating or are we actually seeing the rotation of the earth? I'm hoping the latter, because that seems really awesome. - EdmontonEh, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1Great video!, when does the tank drop off? I always figured it was earlier than that...
- Intamin, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1I live in Tampa and we would always watch the shuttle launch because we could see it clearly, almost as if we were at the Cape itself--and it's over 120 miles away.
Just amazing. - 0crabby0, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I would love to see NASA re-use the ET, but I think they might want to wait a while before getting to close...lol
- soyfish, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Can't wait till they put a price tag on that.
- psid8, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1nope, but thanks to Richard Branson, you can go to space if your wealthy
- webcrumb, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1In space, which way is up?
- BinaryFragger, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Incredible.
I just spent an hour on the bus just to cross the city, yet the shuttle left the *planet* in under 150 seconds. Despite being nearly 3 decades old, the Space Shuttle is still an engineering marvel. - manmademark, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Astonishing. I love living in Florida watching this thing launch from my front door but still.. this is an entirely different angle of it all together. This article deserves far more diggs than its getting.
- montroller, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1no i'm pretty sure it turned I don't really know but don't they have to exit the the atmosphere at an angle
- psid8, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0They weren't upside down. The shuttle is on a 90 degree angle, making them sit on their backs the whole ride.
- montroller, on 03/30/2008, -2/+2Did anyone else notice the actual shuttle was upside down the whole time. That must have been mad uncomfortable, but good vid and yah it was kinda therapeutic, I think because of the silence.
- SLockhart, on 03/30/2008, -1/+1I don't think the Flat Earth Society actually still believes the earth is flat, I think they just meet out of habit and discuss how the world could be flat while giving the impression of being a sphere. But I could be wrong.
- theurge14, on 03/30/2008, -0/+0Any idea what STS mission this is from?
- spiritv2, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0damn, i seem to have pissed my pants. that vids the sh8!
