- FatherDEath, on 07/26/2008, -1/+9now we just need to get there and start wearing robes and itll be all good...and after global warming we will call earth tattoine
- Napzilla, on 07/26/2008, -0/+6The relationship between gravitational force and size is not linear. 1) Mass is more important than size in determining the gravitational force of a planet, and 2) as the size of a planet increases, so too does the distance between your centre of mass and the planet's, so the gravitational force will actually increase by the quotient of yours and the planet's combined masses (and the gravitational constant) and the square of the distance between those two centres of mass, or GF = (G*m1*m2)/(r**2). In short, you would most likely not experience 5 times the gravity on a planet five times the size of the Earth.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -0/+6Unfortunately for us the people that already live on similar planets have been watching us. As a result they've developed the means by which to cloak their planets so we can't show up and ruin theirs as well!
- rentmitchum, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4Don't be so proud of the technological terror you plan on constructing. It pales in comparison to the power of the Force.
- beermaker, on 07/26/2008, -2/+6i see future construction protects... thank god I'm civil engineer
- Harelin, on 07/26/2008, -1/+5All this has happened before, and will happen again.
- DontThinkSo, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4Not necessarily; I think they mean 5 times the volume of Earth, not 5 times the density (with the same volume). A larger volume means more distance from the center, and thus less force due to gravity. That being said, it all depends on the density of the planet in the end, as a more dense planet would counter that effect.
- Senious, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4Galactic Empire FTW?
- rentmitchum, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3New New Jersey space port.. Never will you find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy...
Oh and dude, you're totally missing another Sun (or star if you don't wanna use Earthling terms.. They can't all be Sol) - binky79, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3Can they check for dinosaurs? You don't want that surprise after traveling 200k light years.
- rentmitchum, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Yes.. the chronology of this.. Epoch.. is .. quantum.
You sound all.. 13 years old or something. - rodrigo74, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Tattoine is like Tatooine but with a single sun?
- rentmitchum, on 07/26/2008, -2/+3Dude.. really.. We know what you're saying without the parentheses.. It's like if I said.. "That world looks like the Eye of Sauron (Lord of the Rings! LOL!)"
You're among nerds here.. - rentmitchum, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Maybe it wouldn't be as dense? I'unno..
- knowicki, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2Now if we can be convinced of weapons of mass destruction on these places...
- elfprince13, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1what can I say? that whole lack of teleportation thing is a drag.
- rentmitchum, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2Carl Sagan would be proud.
- Dunge, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2Asteroids sent by insects!! (Starship Troopers)
- diggdallas, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Some strap-on action?
Kinky - diggdallas, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1If we're all getting planets, I want to own Uranus.
- starmanjones, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1yikes... i was going to quote some Gerard O'Neill. someone forgot to renew the domain.
but in short the conclusion he drew is difficult to argue with. the best place for an expanding technological civilization is not the surface of a planet. we need more energy. we need more resources. we need more room. planets are difficult. space is full of wasted materials... in the form of asteroids, comets and energy. we can build many times the surface area of earth and not put a dent in the rubble. you can't escape the energy.
i don't think many doubt that we need to change our life style in ways that we can't really do... or we kill the earth. or it kills us. our technology and the production of it is just hazardous to living planets. it would be a shame to kill earth since its the only place we know of that developed life. but we could build earth like colonies in open space where resources and energy are all but free. land can be built.
i wouldn't bet against learning how to go fast and far. but if we don't it would take generation ships to reach a planet and by the time colonists get there they aren't likely to want to make a home on a planet. they will be spacefarers.
unfortunately... the meek will inherit the earth... and continue to screw it up. so lets grab life and cover our part of the galaxy with it.

if someone from SSI reads this and there is actually a problem i would be glad to host and admin it. it can be up in minutes. - shagg187, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1I'm sure the species in the 'Sister Earths' are waiting for us to find them...
- RHA0, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1how about finding a way to get there first?
- seraph582, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1oh? I wasn't aware Fiction had ever been productive.
- dselliott, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1Humans suck.
- thegrantman, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1I will name my new planet: New New York.
- thegrantman, on 07/27/2008, -0/+0Just her tongue...it keeps her quiet.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -2/+2It marks the beginning of a new Epoch, the likes of which we have never witnessed before.
- bwwales, on 07/27/2008, -0/+0Some people who don't appreciate ***** movies might actually like the clarification.
- highlyhigh, on 07/27/2008, -1/+0wow digg is a ***** now.
- SocketNine3Nine, on 07/26/2008, -2/+1“Five times larger than Earth is actually pretty good from the point of view of geochemistry and biochemistry,”
Means 5 times the gravity of the earth, how would we survive? - ryouko, on 07/26/2008, -3/+2This is a way less cooler version of the search for the home planet of the descolada.
- thegrantman, on 07/27/2008, -1/+0My girlfriend already laid claim to it.
- rentmitchum, on 07/26/2008, -4/+1Your dick is just catching up to your mom.
- highlyhigh, on 07/26/2008, -5/+1science just now catching up to fiction
