APOD: NGC 7331 and Beyond
apod.nasa.gov — Big, beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 7331 is often touted as an analog to our own Milky Way. About 50 million light-years distant in the northern constellation Pegasus, NGC 7331 was recognized early on as a spiral nebula and is actually one of the brighter galaxies not included in Charles Messier's famous 18th century catalog. Since the galaxy's disk i

- alaynapaige, on 07/12/2008, -7/+4Oh this is so beautiful. Our Creator has such a vivid mind to create such things for our enjoyment. I love it. :)
- AresDiggs, on 07/12/2008, -3/+3Yea god created an almost infinite universe just so his creations would have something to look at when they are bored... give me a break
One question for you.. and i'm serious about this... if we had to have been created by a higher being... who created the creator?.... at some point you are going to have to admit that a being just came to be.... so why is it so hard to believe that us humans just came to be out of evolution?- k7jeb, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3Well, let's see. We have a Creator. But then, He has a Creator. And then He has a Creator... I could go on, but
it's Creators all the way up. - AresDiggs, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4... and turtles all the way down?

- danharlow, on 07/12/2008, -2/+6I could stare at this for hours and hours. Amazing how the simple perfection of maths and physics can create such incredible structures. For a universe that is billions of years old, it's still looking pretty good : minus the 50,000,000 years it took the light in this image to reach us. Just think, 50,000,000 years ago humans had not yet evolved to look up at the stars and wonder about them.

Upmodded for not being a pussy!
There is hope for you yet.- desertDenizen, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1Woohoo!
The irony of the your no-sex comment is that I wrote a book in my twenties that had a similarly provocative pro-women statement in the foreword, and that got me more tail than you could imagine. (Being an author helps, but a word to the wise: women swoon for a guy who will stick up for them.)
As it happens, my girlfriend and I are going to have a baby, so I've been learning a lot about natural childbirth, in our home with a midwife. The hospital is only 5 min away, but it's some pretty scary *****. My business partner almost died giving birth last year.

- jamessavik, on 07/12/2008, -1/+9No it is not.
Our galaxy is a barred spiral. So where is the bar in NGC 7331? There isn't one. The only thing that it has in common with the Milky way is that its a spiral. NGC1300 from a couple of weeks ago is a barred spiral and a much better comparison to our galaxy. - nubber, on 07/12/2008, -2/+8 AresDiggs: Are you suggesting that the Creator lied to us about where we came from? Had to make up a story? Owes us a full explanation? Hasn't said a word to anyone over the centuries about it? Open your BOOK and read a little. The people who reported what He has had to say weren't making it up.
- jamessavik, on 07/12/2008, -4/+3Which one of God's 10,000 names? Which book?
Allah? Yahwey? God? the Great Spirit? Buddah? Christ? Zoroaster? Odin? Baal? Zempat? Zule? Bucca? Zeus?
It makes a difference because the followers of the other 9,999 names of God will wish to kill you and some are better at it than others.- nubber, on 07/12/2008, -3/+1I would be referring to the God of Love, Prince of Peace, the ONLY one who resurrected and showed Himself to many many people to "prove" who He was.

- AresDiggs, on 07/12/2008, -4/+1You could at least learn how to use a reply button.. its not to difficult.
The bible is not proof of god... how about i give you a harry potter book and tell you that's proof of teenage witches and wizards....
And HOW do you know they were not making it up? where you there? did you see these things happen first hand? no.. so how do you know without a doubt that the bible is all truth? because you have been told all your life by other people that it is true.. right? Do you believe in Santa? probably not that would just be stupid to think there is a fat guy flying around earth in a sled pulled by rain deer giving out gifts...
Like the comment above mine states... do you believe in Zeus, Ares, Apollo, or any of the other gods that people have believed in? probably not... and why is that? there are written accounts of the miracles these gods performed... but the people who wrote those are lairs and the people who wrote the bible are telling the truth? right?
But i can see where this is going.. your gonna say i have no proof god doesn't exist and i'm gonna say that you have no proof that he does exist ( the bible is not proof ) ... but the way i think... is when i can't prove something to be true that means its probably not true.. where as you cant prove something is true and still believe it to be true... that's not very logical- nubber, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I can see you have thoroughly thought this through--NOT. (Sorry I couldn't seem to get the reply button to work the first time. ) You may not believe there is a spiritual realm apart from this world. it is indeed different than this world where we can see and feel and "prove" things. But for you to think it doesn't exist and to try to insist that I don't know it exists is foolish. I and others like me have been there and can only shake our heads at those of you who haven't got a clue. That world also has its ways to test and prove things, but most people of your persuasion can't bring yourselves to apply those tests, because they require you to admit to the existence of someone greater than yourselves. But those tests are real. The spiritual realm will still be there and functioning perfectly well long long after this world has gone.
- AresDiggs, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2You didn't answer any of my questions... just as i thought was going to happen..
What does believing in something greater then me do? if there is a god... why does he let us wage wars, die of diseases, let us suffer, die of starvation, let grown men rape little boys.. the list could go on... but you get my point... ***** him... hes not greater then me... i wouldn't let those things happen... that right there in and of it self proves there is no god greater then me... - nubber, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Do you have your agency to choose? Of course you do--everyone does. Hence the wars, etc. One day the books will be balanced; everyone will have to account for how he used his agency. If I could force you to believe or to do the right thing, you could never be made to account for it; you could just point the finger at me for forcing you. Go read the Bible. Until you actually "get it," there is no point in further discussion. One can't talk about higher math with a 2-year old, and one can't discuss the things of God with someone who won't open and really dig into the text He has had written. Bye for now.
- AresDiggs, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1well that's an easy escape for you... just assume i have not read the bible or believed in god at one time... I have done those things... and its BS... the bible has some beautiful text and stories but nothing more... i like harry potter books to but i do not believe in witches and wizards ... just as reading the bible does not make me or prove to me that there is a god....
You can claim that i don't 'get it' and that's why you wont take the discussion further but we both know the real reason is you have no argument and that all you can say is "god wrote the bible, bible equals god"...
what a bunch of BS...
- jamessavik, on 07/12/2008, -4/+3Which one of God's 10,000 names? Which book?
- Bashkii, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Hey guys, I have a question. Traveling at the speed of light it appears that time bends backwards, doesn't it? So If I go to that Galaxy 50 million light years away at the speed of light, wouldn't I go backwards in time? I don't understand this.
So, going at the speed of light I would take 50 million years to get there, right? But how come?
Confused!!- AresDiggs, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4Wait... how does time bend backwards at the speed of light... i think what is generally believed is that time slows down as you approach light speed.
but i don't really understand what you are trying to ask... rephrase it and i will try and help you... - danharlow, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2The light in the image you are seeing is 50,000,000 years old. Astronomy is basically time travel to when the universe was younger.
On a smaller scale try to think about when you go to a concert and you sit far away from the drummer. When he hits the drums you see him hit the drum before you hear the noise it makes.
Light works in basically the same way. The further away something is, the longer it takes for the light to get to us thus the older the light is.
Fundamentalist American Christians believe the Earth and universe is only 6000-10000 years old which means their God traced the lines of light from these distant objects to our eyes to make up the time difference.
Of course this would mean their God has lied to them to make the universe look older than it really is but a God that lies is of course incompatible with the teachings of Judeo-Christian holy texts so this is explained away as "God works in mysterious ways".
To summarize, when you look up at the night sky and observe galaxies millions of light years away you are not only engaging your imagination and participating in the oldest science but also disproving the literal interpretations of all Judeo-Christian writings and texts.- AresDiggs, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2Amen

- Anomaly100, on 07/12/2008, -4/+5You shouldn't mock what others believe in. You can't even spell His name..slowly now....it's not Jebus....it's Jesus...Now, why would you out of the blue, find it necessary to just decide to say something so dense? Never mind, you probably don't know that either..
- AresDiggs, on 07/12/2008, -4/+3dude jebus is what homer simpson says...
And i said it because.. well i wanted to... do i need another reason? i have had religious people come to my door uninvited to try and spread the word of god... well i came to this discussion to spread what i believe in...- FarOutGrace, on 07/12/2008, -3/+3That makes sense. Someone comes to your door that you don't want to talk to and you feel you just have to open it.

and besides the same would apply here... no one made you click the link to read these comments...
