APOD: M81 Feeding a Black Hole

apod.nasa.gov — This impressive color composite shows spiral galaxy M81 across the electromagnetic spectrum. It combines X-ray data (blue) from the Chandra Observatory, infrared data (pink) from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and an ultraviolet image (purple) from the GALEX satellite, with a visible light (green) Hubble image.

  • RapidEye, on 06/27/2008, -0/+21M81 is a dandy of a DSO in backyard amateur telescopes. My 10" F/5 dob doesn't show the colors but does show the spiral structure and stellar core. I was out 2 nights ago looking at both M81 and nearby M82 - very nice pair!

    Seventy million.

    There are smaller baby black holes that are 1/700,000 the size of the center one that they are referring to, which may be what you read. But you should have kept reading.
