- MarkusX, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7This is a pretty cool picture, having the full moon in the frame at that time is like a photographer's dream.
- d2002, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5What a fantastic shot.
- sternomastoid, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5If anyone is interested in watching the launch again in HD, you can download it from NASA.

(1080i, 720p and 480p versions) - Sornos, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I just realized that APOD stood for Astronomy Picture Of the Day. Consider my mind blown.
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3"Desktop backgrounds" for those of us who run other OSes.
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Out of curiosity, what else are you sick of spending money on, if anything? Also, what would you rather spend the money on?
- th3heretic, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2When I watched the shuttle launch last week, it was amazing how within 4 min of launching the space shuttle was no brighter than a distant star.
- d3l80y, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Great picture, i was at Kennedy Space Centre for this launch http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mEcQzMUybDs
- twinklyJesus, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2I'll bet you're not sick of using all the modern technology you like so much, whose existence can be directly traced to NASA and their research.
- iSamurai, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2It was streamed live on Ustream. My first experience seeing a live launch, and the first time on the internet at that. Was amazing to think how far we'd come yet how insignificant we still are.
- GawtMilk, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2The rich, super rich and large corporations pay the vast majority of tax dollars, so this is something funded primarily by others often for the benefit of you. Even if you were the one paying, NASA's budget comes from money paid to the Department of Defense. NASA's budget last year was $17.3b, which is 2% of the DoD's projected 2009 budget of $651.2b. The DoD's allocated money was in turn 21% of the total budget in the US. NASA's budget is therefore only 0.5% of the total budget in the US, being beaten by things like farm and ethanol subsidies in terms of dollars.
Of all the budget cuts needed in the US, NASA isn't the place to look. Space and the space industry is an excellent way to build ties with various countries in the world; as NASA helps launch various country's satellites for things like telecommunications. As various countries around the world are spending more and more on their space programs, America is presented with an opportunity to help the world.
If there were a checklist on a tax form that listed all the things you'd still want to pay for, there'd be a lot of things people would cut. Bailouts, tax subsidies towards farms, the war in Iraq. 0.5% of your taxes go towards NASA; and we actually get a lot in return, in terms of vital scientific research and partnerships with other countries.
Not many Government programs could do as much good as NASA does on a - DaviDTC, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1That was the first time you were on the internet? I know you aren't talking about the launch showing live for the first time on the internet cause I have watched them all of them live on the internet this year.
