- ChrisInTheDark, on 11/03/2009, -1/+9What do you mean, Bactame? The explanation states that the image includes both the Pleiades and the California Nebula......
- Mujokan, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3By the way, if you ever wondered why Subaru has that logo with the stars, it's because the name refers to the Pleiades cluster.
- greggerm, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3Pleiades (n) : (aka: THE SEVEN SISTERS)
1. Classical Mythology. seven daughters of Atlas and half sisters of the Hyades, placed among the stars to save them from the pursuit of Orion. One of them (the Lost Pleiad) hides, either from grief or shame.
2. Astronomy. a conspicuous group or cluster of stars in the constellation Taurus, commonly spoken of as seven, though only six are visible. (the missing one is the "Lost Pleiad") - DeepSkyColors, on 11/03/2009, -2/+4Just to clarify, the Pleiades (AKA 7 sisters, M45, etc) is not a constellation but an open cluster. It sits in the constellation Taurus. Also, this image is not a "close range" but in fact a very wide field that covers an area of approximately 17x8 degrees. The California nebula on the left is in the constellation Perseus, so the image in fact covers a small area of both constellations.
- Cowboy1015, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2fight!
- Surferess, on 11/03/2009, -2/+3Seven Sisters was always my fave constellation b/c it was easy to find, but I never imagined it would looks like this at closer range. Beautiful!
- dasbrewer, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Beautiful pic.
- Fuzzycop, on 11/03/2009, -2/+2Explanation: On the upper right, dressed in blue, is the Pleiades. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades is one of the brightest and most easily visible open clusters on the sky. The Pleiades contains over 3,000 stars, is about 400 light years away, and only 13 light years across. Surrounding the stars is a spectacular blue reflection nebula made of fine dust. A common legend is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named. On the lower left, shining in red, is the California Nebula. Named for its shape, the California Nebula is much dimmer and hence harder to see than the Pleiades. Also known as NGC 1499, this mass of red glowing hydrogen gas is about 1,500 light years away. Although about 25 full moons could fit between them, the above wide angle, deep field image composite has captured them both.
- lohphat, on 11/03/2009, -1/+1You people need to lighten up.
- boogerthecat, on 11/03/2009, -2/+2its not a competition, they are both stunning. Thanks for my newest wallpaper APOD!
- Bactame, on 11/03/2009, -5/+4The Pleiades...come on guys, wake up.
- deathstar100, on 11/03/2009, -2/+1its amazing that when a star dies it leaves behind a beautiful masterpiece.
- lohphat, on 11/03/2009, -3/+2Of course the California nebula would have to be pink.
I wonder if similar star classifications can form binary systems there...
