APOD: Gas and Dust of the Lagoon Nebula

apod.nasa.gov — This beautiful cosmic cloud is a popular stop on telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius. Eighteenth century cosmic toyurist Charles Messier cataloged the bright nebula as M8, while modern day astronomers recognize the Lagoon Nebula as an active stellar nursery about 5,000 light-years distant, in direction of the center of our Milky Way

    also http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/wallpaper2/he ... its the hubble ultra deep field. Everypoint of light is an entire galaxy in this pic, and that was just the hubble zooming in to an ordinary grain of sand sized point in our nightsky. Humbling!
