- skoopmanschap, on 12/13/2007, -0/+30I am very impressed by the external security audit they had done. This will highly improve their status amongst the forum software world.
- TechieMicheal, on 12/13/2007, -3/+22Isn't it amusing how the positive comments about phpBB are being dugg down while the negative comments are being dugg up? Nevermind that most, if not all, of the negative comments are incorrect. People just don't like seeing opensource software succeed. Irony anyone?
Watch, I'll be dugg in to oblivion in a matter of seconds ...
Go phpBB3! - iashraf, on 12/13/2007, -1/+19better late than never*
- ElbertF, on 12/13/2007, -5/+22Congrats, it was worth the wait.

- rupertmorris, on 12/13/2007, -1/+11Does it produce standards-compliant html?

- HighwayofLife, on 12/13/2007, -1/+10phpBB2 had security issues until the phpBB2 Code Inspection which produced phpBB 2.0.18, since then, phpBB has had no major security holes. In phpBB3, it went through a professional code audit by one of the most renown PHP Security Experts in the field, he was quite impressed with the new security in phpBB3. It will be a major step up. The hardest part will be for phpBB to regain its reputation that it lost in phpBB 2.0.10 and earlier due to the major security holes that existed in those versions.
- YourTechSupport, on 12/13/2007, -1/+9Because the last major update was like forever ago.
- gman341, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8If phpBB says that their own product is superior, well i believe them!
- Chirp08, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8Jesus, my first thought was "wtf, 3.0, its been so many years since I followed the forum scene, phpbb2 was just beta" then they mention 6 years in the description and i feel old now :(
- MHobbit, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7In terms of features, you may want to check out the feature comparison page: http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/compare.php
The important thing is to try out the softwares yourself and see what you like. You won't regret trying phpBB3. - tizz66, on 12/13/2007, -3/+10Wow, that's incredibly inaccurate...
- xpose, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7I would love to see a review of phpBB and Simple Machines Forum. I really do wonder which is better....

- DanielGardner, on 12/13/2007, -1/+8Last December 06 I remember getting all ready for the release for this because there was talk it was only moments away. :) One year later....
- r00tus3r, on 12/13/2007, -1/+8Care to back that up with some kind of evidence? Or do you just expect us to take your word for it?
- ksong12, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Yep, its much better. Perfect timing for me. I had been planning on dropping phpBB in my new site. I have used it for a number of years, and currently run 3 phpBB based sites. Yesterday, when starting my fourth one, I was going to switch to SMF, when I decided to check the phpBB website.
And lo and behold, a large countdown clock saying 18 hours 'till the Gold release. I decided to wait and see, and its much better, although creating new forums and categories are even more so a pain in the behind, but it does improve on security. - FHandyman, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Woot! it's here :)
- HighwayofLife, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Produces XHTML 1.0 Strict in prosilver, 1.0 Transitional in subsilver2
- madk, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Clap clap...I've been impatiently waiting
- GreenAlien, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Great, that's the latest phpBB released. Now for the next Joomla release to come out of beta. So much waiting...
- FHandyman, on 12/13/2007, -1/+7Yes, XHTML Transitional compliant, eye candy (Graphics and code), secure and user friendly.
So much fun to make MODs for.
This is an exciting release.
Congratulations to the entire phpBB Team getting this out… it may have taken 6 years, but it was well worth the wait.
I've personally been using it for almost 2 years now… before the first beta release. - Tiscan, on 12/13/2007, -2/+7Wow... no RSS... how can that be? And the comparison chart is wrong on a number of items (I am sure all the PHPBB ones are right, but I am only halfway done and found 3 errors with the others).
- GreenAlien, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5Not sure what a "external security audit" involves exactly, but given the security track record of phpBB over recent years this gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
- localzuk, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Seems to produce XHTML 1.0 Transitional from validating demo default installs.
- leinir, on 12/13/2007, -1/+6Noticeably absent in phpBB's line-up of features is RSS syndication. Yes, i know that mods exist for this, but surely, getting people to actually read forum posts is an important thing... or is that just me?
- camm15h, on 12/13/2007, -2/+7Well done chaps, another mountain conquered!
- kupa, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5I've not had a chance to play with styles in phpBB3, but I remember SMF Styling being a complete pain in the ass. However if you just want something that works, SMF isn't to bad. I liked it's feature of adding mods, rather the phpBB's cut'n'paste type methods.
- localzuk, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5php is a pain to write in? I always found it easy to write in compared to many languages such as perl. To each their own though I suppose
- HighwayofLife, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4If you have such knowledge, prove it.
- ElbertF, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4It's an innovating piece of software and I love it. It wasn't 6 years.
- expert01, on 12/14/2007, -1/+5Now it's time for Duke to appear!
- afx1, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4tableless...nice
vb 4 will also be tableless - Annnouncer, on 12/13/2007, -2/+6If there are, the phpBB team would love to know about them. At the moment, there are none known to the teams.
- zwaldowski, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Congrats to the phpBB Group. What a fantastic release.
- exaulz, on 12/13/2007, -1/+5Already installed it over at my website, and I'm overwhelmed by the amount of features!
Wonderful job to the phpBB Group! - HighwayofLife, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4I did not state that Stefan was the only person to have reviewed the code, but certainly he is the best one to have reviewed it. FYI, a whole team of people reviewed the code and the *final* security audit was performed by Stefan himself.
drakethegreat stated that the code base is still fugly and there are gaping holes. I take issue with that since there was an external security code audit performed on the system. There have also been a team of great people working with the code. I have seen the code myself, and it is far, very very far, from "fugly". Review the coding guidelines to see what I mean. The core code is created along those guidelines, never straying.
Stating that the code is "fugly" suggests that he did not actually review the code at all, and I would suspect he is not experienced in the PHP coding language enough to know, if he looked. :) - Draecana, on 12/14/2007, -0/+4It means they paid someone, SektionEins and Stefan Esser (http://www.hardened-php.net/stefan_esser.24.html) to do a thorough audit of the code. But well before that, even at the birth of what would become 3.0 a number of fundamental decisions were made on how to handle potentially tainted input, building safer queries, etc. which make it inherently safer than 2.0.x. I'm sure if they'd known how delayed 2.2 or 3.0 as it became would be many of those changes would've appeared in the 2.x line sooner - hindsight, a wonderful thing.
- MHobbit, on 12/13/2007, -1/+4Weekly hacks? I'd like to see your data on that. Pretty much all complaints about phpBB's security come from vulnerabilities for versions 2.0.11 through 2.0.18 (those releases had the worst vulnerabilities). Most hacking incidents nowadays happen to people's *unpatched*, non-updated forums running ancient code. Besides, you obviously have ignored the fact that phpBB3 underwent a professional, third-party security audit. See Stefan Esser's comments about it on the press page @ phpbb.com.
- blazes816, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3There isn't.
- MHobbit, on 12/13/2007, -1/+4To add on to what Announcer said, if you really think there is one, go and post it here: http://www.phpbb.com/security/ . You're not helping anyone if you don't speak up, assuming that there's any substance behind your claim.
- CircularSquare, on 12/13/2007, -1/+4Love it! I have been with these guys since May 2007 and I have to say, I am extremely impressed. I hope they continue to grow until phpBB can take the head place of any forum software (besides, who wants to pay 150 dollars for software that isn't as good as phpBB?)
- Sharn8, on 12/14/2007, -0/+3Yet, you probably still use Windows XP, which happens to be nearly 7 years old with only a few updates.
