- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Installation from Windows: Get Knoppix or SLAX and use the Linux instructions.
My favorite line. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If I can't play Super Mario Brothers, It isn't worth it right now!
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why not?
- HaroldHupmobile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9How do you control it?
Seems the click wheel would be awkward. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6iPodMAME is much more fun: http://ipodlinux.org/Ipodmame
- st3v, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They should not call this emulator iNES, because that name is already taken by one of the first NES emulators:
http://fms.komkon.org/iNES/ - SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5cool...but I'm not going to bother until contra is working
UP-UP-DOWN-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT-B-A-START - jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A true hacker does not need a reason why. Seriously, some of this is of the Climb Mt. Everest Category of Programming; why do it? To see if it can be done.
- Carv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is great, iPL are doing some amazing things with the iPod. Hopefully in the future this can support SMB games!
- LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I understand the whole "Because you can" argument, but really, the ipod just isn't a good choice for video game emulation at all.
- weird0science, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Added pics to the wiki! Check it out!
- treed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Indeed. In fact, iNES is so old, the format of .nes files is known internally as iNES format.
- BradC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To me, it seems like it's more of a proof-of-concept thing, rather than something that is practical to use. It's one of those things that's really cool to be able to do it, but it just wouldn't work very well in actuality.
- LatvianHedgehog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the only proof is frozen start screen
- doghand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you touch a certain part of the click wheel to simulate pressing a button. Works okay but you can't press two buttons at once
- goatomatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree, plus where do you map the other buttons like a, b, select, and start?
- zenscope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2games like tetris (when it works) would be great for the pod. wheel to spin, click to drop... what more do you need?
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Agreed. and it works a hellova lot better on the psp.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@jschrab - I totally agree with the fact that it's awesome as hell that they did it. I just don't see the practicality of it. I'm glad that they have learned the ins and outs of linux on the iPod, but it'd be better if they could make a practical project out of it.
- mvnicosia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Zelda on my iPod? Somebody help these guys out, quick! My train commute in the morning is begging for this!
- zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Works even better on the gameboy advance (SP), since a good number of NES and SNES games actually came out for it, and it has better battery life than the PSP by far.
- weird0science, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I am working on installing it now...I will put up pics once I get it going
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice! They even show my favorite NES game playing on it. Castlevania is the bomb!
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always thought the port for the ff/rewind/play/pause could be exploited to make a mini game controller. Same would go for the PSP.
- xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2its cool i guess..but not very usefull.
- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no 4g support. yeah, its pretty useless, but if you're bringing your ipod on a long car trip, and all you want to bring is your ipod, these nintendo emulators last you a long time. once the new ipod comes out with the full screen, i think ipodlinux will take off more.
- Moldarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This was way too cool!
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only problem is that at that point, they'll have to start all over. Why can't Apple keep things the same from version to version? I mean, they're releasing a new version every year, so this is just ridiculous.
- weird0science, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Super Mario Bros 2 Is fully playable now
- weird0science, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just wait guys, it is in development...things will be straightened out eventually. Remember, it is open source, so you can pitch in if you want to!
There are 9 possible buttons on the iPod, FYI.
Hold button is good for select or start
Then you can use scroll left and scroll right
Then you can push up, down, left, and right
Finally, you have the center button
There are plenty of buttons there, once a person learns the combos, it should work out nicely. - weird0science, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Super Mario 2 is fully playable (some control issues, but it doesn't crash)! See the wiki.
- weird0science, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, this will eventually be full screen, and fully playable, also compatible with all nes roms. Look at Rockboy for rockbox...it isn't done yet, but look how far it has come.
- LocalH, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What difference does that make?
- onthereal123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey does anyone know where i can download rockboy for the 5g ipod??
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That looks horrible. So small, it seems to be not worth it.
- LoneStar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Sweet!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like iPodnes better
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3...Could someone enlighten me as to why this is a good idea? It's an iPod. It's a music device. It has one "true" button. Even if you can get the clickwheel to emulate up, down, left, and right, you're still ***** out of luck as far as the other 4 buttons go (start, select, a, and b). Not to mention that it would be awkward as hell to have your main function button in the center of your "d-pad". Sorry, but I don't see this having a long lifespan.
- DEFSMAC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1this looks awesome!
- bigpixl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Who still believes that you can have ROMs for 24 hours?
- zPaxton, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Seriously, its an effing iPod....its not a video game system and emulating a console on it is retarted. Controls? Yeah, thats the first one, processor speed? Yeah, there is another... There is no reason other than proof of concept to emulate this stuff on the iPod when there is no controller for it. Make a controler attachment for the dock or remote port and then maybe but until then stick to a linux based handheld like the GP2X or something. The scroll wheel isn't the answer to everything!!
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6Why?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1Hey, for all we know them ***** workin on a way to make the new radio/remote contrl Apple released for the new iPods into the game controllers......
