- welvis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37What did he think was going to happen? He's using a free service provided by Google.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Whoah, people actually use search engines other than Google?
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -16/+34Just another whiney blogger.
- KingAR_II, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"Im going to call Google in a little while and see if we can come to am agreement"... Does he really think Google has time to waste?!
btw... the current location of the search bar is pointless anyway, I'm willing to bet that thing gets one use a month - and it's by him! - ericsnels, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Possibly two different reasons why people are digging:
1. Way to go Google!
2. Google needs to respect their bloggers.
Me, I digg it for number 1. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's got alot of diggs because he said what we're all thinking.
And we don't "ap(p)rove what Google does, no matter what", they just happen to do alot of things right. Look to Google Video for an example of something google has done wrong and has gotten the beat down from internet users (though personally i love their free video service, the pay-version is terrible).
And NO, I can say with complete certainty, if MSN had done the same thing (ask user to comply with TOS or suffer termination) we (at least I) would give the same reaction: READ THE DAMN TOS before you start complaining. When you began using the service, you agreed to the Terms Of Service, and yes, that actually means you have to abide by them!
sigh, why is this even being talked about. he has gotten much more attention than he deserves. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I agree on this...but I wonder what the digg community's repsonse would be if this was a blogger usiung an MSN service being told they couldn't have Google Search on their site.
I GUARANTEE it would be very different. Not necessarily from you, but the overall view of digg would be VERY different - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10why not just add a google bar, they're actually usefull. And google has a good reason for this why should they advertise their competitions search engine on a free blog?
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11This guy's an idiot for, first of all, using something other than Google and for disputing it. You're using a free service from Google, what the hell do you expect?
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5wait wait wait... so if msn forces people on msn spaces not to use google search on their site its ok? i bet you will be up in arms about it. mr. opensource+linuxuser
- jdog1016, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10You're right. Google has every right to do what they did, just as newspapers have every right to print those Danish cartoons. But that doesn't make it right. For Google to say that people can't put whatever content they want on their blogs, and then turn around and say that their mission is to make information universally available and useful is incredibly hypocritical.
- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its more like Microsoft using Windows to gain an unfair competitive advantage for IE. Google's blog division and their search division are separate. For google to use their (somewhat popular) blog software to gain an advantage in their search bar is unfair to the extent that it disadvantages MSN (not much but still a bit).
This is a small problem, but come on google, don't be evil doesn't just mean the big things. That said, Google is still the best in the biz and my fav tech company period. - moose, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"I use both Linux and Windows on a daily basis." He should know better than to use msn search if he knows enough to use linux *shrug*
- lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Uh, you're missing the point here.
What happened to dont be evil? Thats like Microsoft blocking out google on their operating system. - Mysidia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This really seems evil.., because it is a form of censorship all the blogger did was plop a search bar in there. Note the specious argument for removal: "obstructing Googles services from operating efficiently and effectively"
If "it's a competing service" is the true reason for the required removal, then it seems the site's admins were deceptive in a way, which is far from not evil.
Think what they might have done if he posted a whole article critical of Google or describing some
service offered by a conceivable competitor?
Yes, Google has the legal right to force him to remove it, which does not mean it is the right thing to do.
Especially not to avoid admitting that the reason for removal is that Blogger happens to be owned by Google now.
Maybe 7 years from now, if Blogger gets bought out by Microsoft, immediately followed by a wiping of all pro-Linux blog articles and links, people will realize, that self-serving censoring of legitimate
content users put up is evil, no matter who does it. - robertojdohnert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First of all, I never complained about what Google did. When I originally posted it on C9 and on the blog, which has been removed by the way, go to http://rjdohnert.wordpress.com. Anyhow, the search was up there for over a year and no complaints. Not only that but I was accused of doing something I didnt do. If Microsoft on their spaces site had a user pull the Google search, how up in arms would you guys be?
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Maybe he should move to MSN Spaces?
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3how the hell does that "disrupt" their service? It may (and thats a very big may) give some competition, but disrupt is not the right word
- arrrrrg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7no. it's not. really. (1) google does not have a de facto monopoly on search (2) you're not prevented from doing anything. if someone actually wanted to use msn search, they could to it from the search bar (on any decently modern browser). (3) there are more reasons, but i'm done wasting my time on this
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"google is a company, a corporation and can do whatever they want"
Yeah, thanks for the obvious, completely uninsightful comment. You could say the same thing about microsoft but people still complain about them. The point is a company should serve its customers - its a great way to make the world a better place and to maximize profits. That's the way google got to where it is now. - seanalltogether, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what if he had added a mapquest link to his favorite video store, or posted his AOL IM account, does google have the right to claim that those interfere with their services too?
Where do you draw the line considering the fact that google is buying up every damn service out there on teh web right now? - drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3Wow, he is getting slammed on his blog. Seriously, I didn't even know MSN made their searchbox available, he must have been one of 3 people using it. Attention seeking at its finest.
- doafhat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If you use Google's tools, then you play by Google's rules. Simple as that.
- robertojdohnert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everything was exported to WordPress before the Blogger site went down.
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have no clue how it disrupts their service. My point was that THEY feel it does. They didn't do anything other than tell him to remove it. I can't really see any issues there. It's only a form to a search engine. I can't see why anyone would even use it. If I wanted to do an MSN search I'd go to MSN's site not this guys.
- agimat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4blah blah blah
The "right thing to do" is to not ACCEPT the TOS of a service (a free one at that) if you have no intention of complying in the first place.
And the "decent thing to do" is not to complain when you get caught breaking the rules. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha when i read that i literally cracked up.. i'm loving this.
btw, he's not even asian haha, he's hispanic. - a1532b, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5So...the whole point of the article is that some guy didn't follow the rules so he got in trouble?
The title should be "Man doesn't follow TOS. Received e-mail about it". Notice how that is not exciting. This article, no matter how you attempt to spice it up is the same way. This should not be on digg. - appletalk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"Google fears MSN Search" is a good title.
- kungPow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't let all the flamers and trolls get to you. I hope you exported your entries before deleting your blog. I saw in google cache you have been posting some interesting stuff.
Blogger sucks anyway, they need to add some freaking category support already. - frontpage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If that guy actually chooses MSN, he deserves whatever he gets.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I thought the same thing - google is being sort of evil. If they came out and said "you are helping our competitors" they would at least be honest, but instead they are coming out with some BS charge: "obstructing Googles services from operating efficiently and effectively"
I don't blame google, but I think it's bad PR and is, very slightly, "evil" - poodle5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Boy, is he getting slammed...
"Your mom is a skank who wears combat boots.
MSN tried to hide it from me, but a quick Google search revealed the truth."
"Why do I feel the need to spam the hell out of this ***** blog?"
Not to mention the full-page recipe on cooking rice that somebody posted... - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2unsurprisingly, that statement is incorrect.
- fullcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1msn search is acually better in most cases than google now days, just that no one noticed.
- fillup07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Better title....why? Because it's actually accurate and not just used to manipulate people into clicking?
- spkelley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why did you remove your posts attacking Google? Just curious. Seems strange that you would do so. They were there earlier. Why are they gone now?
- pr0lific, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3That is why you use http://search.msn.com/ it's clean and suprisingly msn search is pretty darn good.
- Hyperion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This one's great: "HEY, WHO TOOK OFF ALL THE FAT JOKES?? THOSE WERE HILARIOUS!!"
But anyway, this is lame and how can he not expect what he's getting? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I call *****.
Why would google care if a blog had an msn bar in a spot where I'm sure it gets little or no use. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"What happened to dont be evil? Thats like Microsoft blocking out google on their operating system."
What?! Hardly. - ppinette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet Christ, has anyone been to his website? http://www.geocities.com/rjdohnert/
He has links to his blogspot, his spaces.msn blog, and his audio blog at easyjournal He also displays his personal email address using mailto:
Also the site gave me a headache just looking at it. - MattCutts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blogger followed up with a post at http://buzz.blogger.com/2006/03/search-policy.html
One excerpt: "Our content policies enable the widest range of expression possible. And we're proud that Blogger users can customize their blogs in the manner that suits them best ... even if that means using another search tool."
(Note: I'm a software engineer at Google.) - Vortech89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have to give Google a hand for this. Anyone who actually likes using MSN over Google is out of their mind (no offense). Although I find it interesting my site has gotten more hits from the MSNbot than the Googlebot.
- Discourses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This one wins:
"I searched MSN for fat and I got your picture Mr. Fatty McFatterson.
Here, have a piece of chicken." - GuineaPig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This attention-seeking whore was blubbering about this on Channel9, too. His whole raison d'etre seems to be figuring out whatever it takes to annoy others.
- robertojdohnert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never posted anything attacking Google, I put up blog entries entailing a situation that I had with the company and the conclusions. I removed them because A) The blog was being spammed. Only a few posts were productive, the rest were derogatory and insulting and off subject matter. At the rate they were coming in it was extremely hard to censor them. I removed the blog from Blogger because I no longer use Blogger. I cancelled all my accounts with Google, I no longer use their services. I took them off of Wordpress because the spamming was continuing, the problem had nothing to do with Wordpress and it was just wasting bandwidth. I got the point though, most of you agree with Google either through hatred of Microsoft or by the ignorance of saying I never read the TOS. I also learned that most of you thought I was fat and ugly and I needed to quit eating chicken, when in reality if any of you knew me you would know since the picture was taken I have lost 28 pounds, I exercise now, I eat right, Im having intercourse with one woman. Hey, life is good. By the bye, I hate chicken, I dont like the taste of it for those that are interested. As far as Im concerned its a dead issue, I gave Google what they requested, I went with a blogging service that neither Google nor Microsoft own and I can link to any search engine I want. Wordpress is a new beginning, Im one of those Im willing to let the past go and move on and not dwell on it.
- flyingdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google Sucks
- voltagex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WTF. Why is this surprising. What a whiny little bitch! Of course Google's gonna block an MSN search bar.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, google is a corporation like all corporations (Myspace, Microsoft, etc...). As it's a free service, why complain.
That blogger should find some other service that provides that.
And ***** MSN. MSN sucks and is a reason why IE sucks. -
