- tiger2k5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11freedb2 is the development project that played a big role in the demise of freedb. That the developer is advertising it here now, apparently trying to profit from what he caused is immoral in my opinion.
Additionally, using the name freedb2.org is stealing freedb's name. Furthermore horar has not yet released source code or a database dump, so as of this moment, freedb2 is a closed source project, which violates the GPL under which the database archives are released. Even if the GPL may not be enforceable in this case, not releasing a database dump is certainly morally wrong. - megari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5As one of the core team members who left, I find this characterization false and unfair. If this truly is OP's view of things, I can only wonder how bad the communication problems and misunderstandings we experienced must have been.
I found it completely clear that the freedom of the project would not be compromised. There was no chance in hell we would have let freedb not live up to its name and reputation. Freeness means freeness (both as in beer and as in speech) and there's not a whole lot of space to distort it.
The communication problems originally sparked by an argument between OP and an involved party elevated and eventually OP took hostile unilateral action to disable the email account and transmissions to said party while there was an effort going on to fix things. This was unacceptable and we found that it was no longer possible to work with OP who seemingly did no longer find it necessary to discuss such a significant move with the others.
I am sad about the whole situation and that OP sees things this way and finds it necessary to spread misinformation about me and the other member who left. - tiger2k5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is a insulting and unfair being posted by one of the freedb team members involved in this!
freeness was the main objective of Ari and myself (Joerg) and we did everything in our power to keep freedb free while we were members of the team!
If Michael (Lurchentsafter) is stating that we didn't want to keep freedb completely free, that's simply a lie. We worked for that goal (keeping freedb free), which was the most important one, till the last minute! - horar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Although the future of freedb.org may be uncertain there is no doubt that http://freedb2.org has a very bright future. freedb2.org has been rewritten from the ground up to use the GPL'd data of freedb.org and (coming soon) the public domain data from musicbrainz.org. Currently freedb2.org has one of the best music search pages on the net and also supports the essential subset of the cddb over http protocol. You should find that CDEX, GRIP and NERO all work just fine with freedb2.org.
