- Califax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10One question I have is why did they acquire Skype for such a large sum if they don't even plan to use it in such an obvious opportunity as this
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you don't know by now that using your cell phone will incur "normal air-time charges" then I've got a big truck of Internets to sell you for cheap.
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google owns GTalk.
Ebay owns Skype.
Conflict of interest either way -- i don't see how this can work. - jessiepoohky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who's going to answer all your ad calls??
The whole promise of business online is to automate much of the inter-customer relationship.
I don't want to talk to anyone off a web ad, I want detailed info that I can digest at leisure.
So now you won't need a website, just a friggin' call center in India to answer all the web ad calls you'll get.
The web's s'pose to make things easier, not tie you to the bloody phone.
Having ato answer calls from web ads in a dumbass idea. - ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google is much more present in the Advertising business. In fact, I would go as far to say that Google is one of the number 1 advertisers on the Internet (I don't have numbers to back me up though). So Google would be a logical choice to help with ads. It's *possible* that one of Google's term to help with the ads would be to use GoogleTalk....
- k00ld00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This can't be right. I love the idea, but Google hasn't implemented this with Google Checkout/Google Base, and they are going to do it with EBay? And remember that EBay bans Google Checkout payment. It's all quite odd...
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah at first i thought they were using skype tech to power this, but i guess it is gtalk tech.. oh wells
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe this means that Google Checkout will soon be compatible with eBay?
- creloaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok im an idiot, i only read the comments, i read the article and I see the link to businessweek. :)
- Scruffydan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would have thought that eBay would use skype for its "click-to-call" feature
- epheterson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woah woah woah, wasn't ebay completely against google?
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1didn't ebay ditch google search for yahoo just a lil while back?
- SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2poo poo pee

You obviously don't know people. Most would rather bother someone else with stupid questions than google for the answers. Now, answering those ad calls will most definitely be a frustrating, unrewarding job, but it's nevertheless a smart move for the companies. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3So why did Ebay buy Skype for 2 Billion or whatever? I just don't get it anymore...

This article provides more details: http://www.voipnews.com.au/content/view/1204/114/
GTalk and Skype will be integrated and either one will be available on eBay and Froogle. Google also picked up eBay's international advertising business (Yahoo! has the US business already).
In any case, eBay paid so much for Skype to get their users. The technology is great too, but the users are what really count. - MentorMatt8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well the article offers insights on how this might work despite some conflicts
of interest. There are many more conflicts than just Skype vs GTalk. That doesn't mean
there could not be common ground, profitable for both parties and for users too. We'll see
soon. - tehpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0make no mistake about this. they are still in competition.
and for you google lovers, google knows they cannot touch what ebay/paypal/skype are doing. so both conceded, but only a bit.
this is cooperative competition, and it's necessary. - creloaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone verified this story with any other news source?
- dH2K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yes. Internet is just for chatting geeks & nerds. No oldschool smalltalkers are welcome.
Yes they are. - dH2K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's almost, but not 100% free. "However, if you give us a mobile phone number, your normal airtime fees or other fees charged by your provider for the call may apply."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1buying out the competition and acquiring assets?
- glafira, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The Giants Unite.
- h0zae, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1sounds great...advertise as MSoft and have all the calls going to the Google? imagine the possibilities...
