Tools of a free society are available to anyone; it is good or bad depending on how they use it. A pedophile is still afforded an attorney and right to defend himself in court, the same tool which protects you as well. Shall we strip you of your rights in order to more speedily prosecute a supposed criminal? Of course not, but your comment is analogous. - mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Clearly that's the only use *rolls eyes*
- spellcheckd, on 06/28/2009, -4/+17torpark has been around for ages. atleast 1 year+
- iceschade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@Arrakistor, I couldn't have put it better myself. I've been trying to find a decent argument against this whole "anonymous internet is for paedophiles" bulls**t for a long time, and that's the best I've heard.
Also see: ScatterChat, FreeNet - RatherDashing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They used the name "DeerPark" instead of "Firefox" as the basis of the name.
- resplence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8*applause*
Seriously. - Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I am also working with Hacktivismo on the scatterchat project. We are considering making it portable.
- Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, I wrote Torpark about a year ago. But it is *significantly* improved, upgraded, more robust. I work on it every weekend. It is cleaner, faster, more integrated, and much much much more robust and fault tolerant. Lots of bugs corrected and new features added. It is definitely not the same program I started a year ago. I actually restarted it from scratch just a month ago because I wanted to restructure all the code. You can see a huge difference if you compare the source codes. Or just compare it to Firefox Portable and you will see,
- nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5thats the whole premise of it, it goes through tor
- doswarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Another quality release from the cDc. First the highly acclaimed Scatterchat (which JST debuted @ HOPE) and now Torpark.
The cDc and the Hacktivismo group are breaking barriers for those who cannot or will not get access to the full internet for fear or repercussions. How would you feel if you couldn't access 75% of the net or your news was scanned and blocked if it spoke badly of our current leadership? These strides are only helping in assisting other people, people like you and me that want access to information.
Viva la bovine! - Tawni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Long live the cDc!!!!! Moooo
- Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What exactly do you mean? It essentially triple SSL proxies itself through the tor network. No need to use it with an additional proxy. Now if you are referring to "what if my network uses a proxy" then you can simply add that to the configuration Torpark understands. Go into the Torpark/App/tor/torrc file and add the proxy information there with the syntax demonstrated in the tor manual page: http://tor.freehaven.net/tor-manual.html
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How does it handle situations when firefox uses too much memory and some is swaped out? How does it clear the traces from swap?
- Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It was first created using Firefox 1.5 before it was release. At that time it was called Deer Park, the specific first version used was Deer Park Alpha. So... -> Tor + park = Torpark.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tor requires that you have a connection to the internet, and connects through a specific port, 8118. If you connect through a proxy or router that blocks 8118, I don't believe you can connect to Tor's network.
I've tried Torpark where I work, and have been unable to connect through the proxy server. Yours may be different. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There isn't. Come to think of it, I've never seen any specifically USB-friendly applications for Mac, but I don't know why. It probably has to do with the fact that it's very unlikely that you'll find yourself on a strange computer that's running OSX, not as if that's a good reason.
If you walk into a public library, you'll probably find Windows. - pdahlem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks like there's only a Windows download. Anyone know if there is a Mac version or comparable browser available?
- RADicalSatDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Torpark is indeed awesome, no doubt! but if people want more choice and prefer the faster Opera browser then:
OperaTor
http://letwist.net/operator
It's basicially a preconfigured bundle and loaded with Opera Browser, The Onion Router (Tor) and Privoxy. - Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not like this it hasn't. It has a similar chassis, but a brand new engine and frame.
- yottamedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey
TOR was out yonks ago......
The government, specifically U.S. Navy designed the TOR system back around the 1990s. The idea is to have routers that do not log. That is the point of it. AFAIK, TOR should have a record of IPs that connected to it, and IPs that it has connected to. NOT the link between the two. If a site has been hacked..accessed or whatever, the site would see the TOR (router) 's IP address, but not be able to find out which user going through that router connected to the site. It might have been the guy running TOR or could have been anyone connecting to him. there's no way to tell, even in the server logs, because that's what the Navy orig. wanted it to do, then they gave up on the idea for some reason.
You don't need to use TORPARK and then TORBIRD or whatever the new one is called. Run TOR with Privoxy and you can point any prog - msn, irc, email, http, ftp, whatever to your local privoxy port, forwarding it through the TOR.
So it's cool *****. And paedophiles? I give more of a ***** about my Big Brother sticking his nose over my shoulder, and I have nothing to hide. Oh, yeah, my freedom and privacy, that's it! :)
Still, NOT new info for sure..... - Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5363230.stm
- butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now see heres the thing that most people dont really get.
They have provided the Source Code for the project. Ensuring that not only can we have disclosure of the content and know what is in the code. We can also ensure that should this project or site be closed or moved on then someone else may if they wish take the code forward.
Fantastic.
There I was looking for a Show and Tell for the BNI Chapter meeting this week and here it is! - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know all about the "Reply" link. I used it, something went wrong. Deal with it. It's not like I had to answer your question, but I did anyway.
If you're using Tor and are able to connect to a server, your connection is encrypted. What you're doing over that connection should be protected. If you've got a "man in the middle", like someone watching the proxy, they'll likely be able to tell that you're using Tor, but not what you're doing with it. The IP of the proxy server will be presented to the Tor server you connect to, but will be obscured as it's routed through Tor's nodes. Your IP will be logged, but not by the sites that you visit on the net. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Wtf? This is OLD news!
In other news, former president Ronald Reagan just died. - hevnsnt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Thanks cDc this is a great release!
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It uses v1.5.0.7 Firefox if you have the latest version.
- Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+124 Megs for Torpark, 30MB for Torbird
- god4twenty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Direct link: http://torpark.nfshost.com/download.html
- Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just remember, it's completely useless if you want to hide your tracks on your end.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think it does.
- flashdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool ! and what about popular plugins like java and flash ? will they work ?
- critic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So how many megs do you need for the USB key?
How much would one cost? - Aphoticom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Arrakistor, I am a long-time Torpark fan.
I am looking forward to an upgrade to Firefox 2.0. - TheRVMGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is what true hackers do!
They not only do something ingeneous, but they do something for the common good, not for kicks or their own personal enjoyment!
Well done guys!! Great product - RobertBogley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0must be old news if it got on bbc! But I missed it before so am glad it came up again on digg
Its too slow to be of practical use related to anything illegal or immoral
Also the browser seems to be an older version of firefox, not displaying sites correctly that do display ok in firefox? - EvilTesdall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2how do these things work with proxies?
- EvilTesdall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0there is this link called reply....use it
secondly if you have do have a proxy that is a passive proxy as well, it will still log the ip address of the machine going to the net, will it not? - ak289, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The issue of "newness" was covered on BoingBoing [http://www.boingboing.net/2006/09/19/torpark_is_out_offer.html]:
elfspice asks,
I have known about torpark nearly a year now and have been using it frequently for about 4 months. It is most certainly not new, and I should also direct you to a new related project, i can't remember the name now (aargh) which is the same thing but with thunderbird, possibly they called it torbird (?)
Oxblood Ruffin sez,
Torpark and Torbird are both services that run on the TOR network. The former is for browsing and the latter is for email. They're derived from Firefox and Thunderbird respectively, and by the same developer. Also these tools are not brand spanking new and have been floating around the haxor world for a while. However, the improvements and added stability were deemed worthy of a more mainstream release, so we took it to the people, yØ. - meeee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Isn't this old news?
Here's a blog entry from May:
http://www.privacytester.com/blog/archives/4-TorPark-for-anonymous-surfing,-anywhere-anytime.html - dmoney22, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2yeah i thought this has been out for awhile
- pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Why Torpark? Why not Torfox?
- DeathAndGravity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Scatterchat. Now this? Thank you! Downloading now.
- EvilTesdall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0any takers?
- LBlinkinbiz, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Not to be a stickler, but it's from Hacktivismo (a branch off of cDc).
- datarecovery, on 10/12/2007, -34/+3Yeah.... so great that paedophiles can browse what they want wherever they are..... and even store the images/videos on the same USB they have the browser on.
Genius!
