- lasean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Only a matter of time before someone developed a script-based version of Basecamp. Ultimately this addresses different customers. Most (not all) of the folks I know on Basecamp wouldn't know what to do with this script. The value of Basecamp is that you don't need "technical" folks on your team to have a great tool. There are a lot of businesses where this applies. The web development community needs to understand that we will always be out numbered by folks who don't care to ever host their own web applications. Whatever your position activeCollab is welcomed since it will likely accelerate progress in online collaboration tools. Competition is good, and 37 Signals will have yet another reason to remain commetitive.
- imulus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lasean is right, however I believe the first core users of Basecamp was the web development / design community, now that community has an alternative which they can implement and style as they wish. Attractive for some but not the majority.
I'm just wondering where the other subscription based competitors to Basecamp are? While we could implement and use this product, I would rather spend my time on client project and pay 37 Signals to maintain and improve Basecamp. - IgogI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope you all realize that activeCollab is in alpha, I wouldn't recommend internal trial without beta version at least. You could get disappointed without reason.
Other than that I think this is a great project. Self hosting, being able to modify things to your own taste, price :) , hopefully active community... - IgogI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great tool, looks very promising...
- ilijastuden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1activeCollab was dugg back in the July - http://digg.com/tech_news/Amazing_clone_of_Basecamp,_100_free
- reveiled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i cant believe this only has 66 diggs as of sept14
- karunnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a potential career opportunity here. You could not modify Basecamp except some colors/styles etc.
There is an opportunity for developers to offer activeCollab modification and integration into other applications and websites. - sheanichole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a perfect solution for small web firms who do not have a lot of overhead to spend trying out various client solutions. You start out small, then somewhere along the line you realize you have too many client projects to keep track of. So then you start looking for a way to manage them...I believe activeCollab is just what we've been waiting for! I truly appreciate the hard work put into an app like this, and making it open-source to boot. I love the fact it is hosted on MY server, and that I can customize the look and feel to suit my business.
- lanvacation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very promising project and best of all, FREE! :)
- phirschybar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looking forward to seeing where this goes. It is certainly NOT a Basecamp killer as some are suggesting but it is good to see that 37Signals have influenced folks to make simpler project management apps. Fortunately, we are now seeing a few that are actually open-source rather than hosted.
- Jicksta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh my goodness. Can it be?
An intelligent comment on Digg?? It can't be!!!!
Glad to see at least some of the good old Slashdot commenting habits are migrating over. :) - Quant7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My current project team used Basecamp for about a month earlier this year. All in all it was quite successful and everyone agreed the interface / approach was productive, only problem was that IT security found out and made us pull it down.... we were storing too much in the way of sensitive company information on a third party's hardware. Which is probably fair.
Anyway, this is a perfect workaround. All data is stored locally! I installed on a dev server today - very, very quick to install and configure. I will now install on a company prod server and start an internal trial. Beautiful... keep up the good work! - Chellex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A definitive BaseCamp killer app.
- sbranden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very impressive software. Perfect for my needs and open source. I am currently on the $49/ month basecamp subscription, but will change that down to the $12 one this month. This software is going to help quite a few people and will get lots of attention from developers and other open source contributors as it is just a good product and the basecamp folk have a habit of alienating their customers.
Basecamp will still do well with the trendy and hip, but I imagine lots of geeks will head the way of activecollab.
