- copperriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like yahoo, look like outlook
- scarper86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Being required to pay for POP access in Yahoo is the reason I switched to Gmail and is the reason I'll stick with Gmail. Although the new Yahoo is nice.
- techjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like that yahoo mail beta
- 200iso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yahoo! wins.
- Tech_Junkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yahoo is much better, and you don't have to be a windows user, I use it on linux and it works just fine.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google sucked balls.
FACE IT! yahoo looks awesome! - mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like eerily similar to Outlook Web Access.
- copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Yahoo as my only mail manager for 2 years and it's about time they redesigned the interface. Huge improvement!
- DannyB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the threads on Gmail also.
- Flawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail wins, not because of the UI, but because of the way information is handled and delivered onscreen.
Threads rule. - tadpole256, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sticking with Google, but I hope they consider re-vamping their interface, they really are begining to look clunky by comparison.
Does Yahoo! offer POP or IMAP Access? - stardog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The one thing that I like better with Gmail is the thread view. I moved all my email to yahoo a few months ago and LOVE it!
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see how Google wins. I liked Yahoo better. Comes down to personal prefeence I guess.
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm loving the logo comparison :D
- walkingmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh... nevermind... helps to read the caption above the images
- walkingmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone notice oddpost was using IE while yahoo and gmail were on firefox... any reasons?
- walkingmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thread view is great! Look at those UI's, GMail has to be the cleanest. OddPost does look ALOT like Outlook, so thats nice.... i guess... Yahoo is just too cluttered for me. I suppose it has to do ALOT with your personal preference. To me (just my opinion and observation of computing preferences), people of the yahoo camp are atypical windoz users who are used to and feel good about all that stuff on their screen, and GMail users are more made up of people are probably Mac/Linux users who appreciate a different interface. I am sure there are Mac/Linux people using Yahoo and I know there are windoz users using GMail. Just my observations of computer users and their preferences. Oh... and GMail is better ;)
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo - Too cluttered
Oddpost - Too "old looking"
Gmail - Just right, said Goldilocks - NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahaha google owns ima stick with google best place they own in every aspect so much stuff you can do once you get a google account nice but the best thing is its so clean and simple jus like apples lol google owns ya ya
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll stick with Gmail
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else wanna bet that that "like the new version?" box on the new yahoo will become an ad in the release version.
I personally like gmail the best, it's much more clean. You can especially see this on the add contact page, which is a much smarter implementation in my opinion - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo is trash they have nasty adds everywere and you think this is acceptable!
- Kizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No free POP forwarding = no Yahoo for me.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can't compare them until the new version of yahoo email is out, it's just unfair
- notman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want a DELETE button on Gmail. I could give two craps about how THEY think I should use my email. I don't want to keep old sales ads and web news that I request to have sent to myself. I should be able to just click delete, not dropdown --> Send to trash. It's small things like that, that DO make Gmail's interface a pain.
They also need to stop rejecting zips with EXEs in them. I hate not being able to send myself files without tricks.
Gmail is still my preference though. It has free POP3, I like the conversation organization, and there are plenty of tools to tell me when I have new gmail. - lerch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail wins in my book. Ill keep using there service.
- NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey notman why dun you jus use gmail hard drive or else go to xmailharddrive.com and upload what you want to ya emails
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0notman - adding a delete button is easy (if you use firefox)
http://www.arantius.com/article/arantius/gmail+delete+button/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With UI design, simplicity is the winner. In this case, we have Y!Mail which sort of resembles the classic email client only in the web browser or gmail which takes all of the cruft of framing pieces together to eliminate as much wasted space as possible.
This is easily seen in the message list where GMail shows a snippet of the message so that you do indeed get an idea of what each message is by more than just the subject, while yahoo sticks to a subject and gives the message below. In the classic sense of managing email, Yahoo would indeed win. However, with the notion of conversations, labels, and a dependency on searching in order to classify large amounts of email, GMail does indeed win.
I think the issue is that some folks want to see Outlook and check their Inbox, and some people want a good solution for having all of their information available to them everywhere they go. Google is about the organization. - Twelve-60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is wrong with you people?! :S
Google >>> Yahoo - JRJ0710296, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"We’re absolutely delighted to report that effective July 9th, 2004, Oddpost is no longer accepting new accounts! How could such a fact possibly bring us such joy?" Oddpost is thrilled to declare that we’ve been acquired by Yahoo! http://www.oddpost.com/yahoo.html
- JRJ0710296, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oddpost had been bought out by Yahoo Mail...so theres no more oddpost accounts being created now. I prefer Yahoo's design, but i use gmail more.
- mynameisneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How retarded this is...why on earth would you compare the number of pixels in the logo? The gmail interface just seems much less cluttered than the yahoo one, and doesn't have a giant block of adspace at the bottom left.
- Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love my gmail just because of the archive, searching and the way they do the conversations and a preview of the subject. I need to try the new yahoo before I can judge them both though.
- junkfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new Yahoo looks nice and I wouldn't mind giving it a try, but I'm fairly confident I'll stick with Gmail. They were the ones who moved everyone from 2 or 4 MB to 2GB+ ... they were the ones (as far as I know) who pushed the DHTML stuff, or at least made it mainstream enough for others to follow ... and I would bet that they will be the ones to come up with the next big idea. I also really like the labels instead of folders.
My one complaint - aside from lack of a delete button, which is easily fixed with the Firefox extension - is the 10MB attachment. With 2GB of space, I'd really like to have 25MB attachments. But none of the big boys have fixed this either, so I can't fault Gmail too much. For now, I guess I'll stick with YouSendIt for the big attachments. - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail has its quirks...
But it is soooo nice.
Especially like the threaded view.
Yahoo has done a great job looking like Outlook, only problem is that I hate outlook :-P - theundone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use gmail and really like it, but I think it would cool if they had maybe 2 or 3 different interfaces to choose from in your personal settings. Also, it's just plain crap that there isn't a simple delete button. Still I stick with gmail for now.
- jameswfrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is down to personal preference, at the end of the day (I love Gmail's interface, conversation organisation, and the tonnes of other cool features it has), but I really don't understand why some people have started say Gmail's interface is 'clunky'. Gmail's interfaces is slick, simple, and great to use! (I have added the Gmail Delete Button Greasemonkey script, as that's the only thing I've found lacking)
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I want a DELETE button on Gmail. I could give two craps about how THEY think I should use my email."
Theres a move to trash thing in the dropdown :)
Then you can empty it.
It's allll personal prefernce, simple as that, no "xzy wins"..
- Ben - functioncode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my book google wins, google will be winning at everything in time to come, OS, search engine, mailing sys, google ig (which microsoft/yahoo stole) gmails ui is soo much better, threaing is fantastic, their boolean search outweighs yahoos, it has POP and IMAP access. I have also used yahoo and its ui is alright, better than the old one at least. no POP and IMAP access their search engine isnt the greatest. and by using the yahoo invite program all you need is to make a trojan and send it though messenger to them and their owned... that easy. i guess i dont feel safe with yahoo... alright enough of my rant.
- johannes96, on 12/12/2008, -0/+0i like yahoo mail
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo interface is amazing, and works on my mac too. Gmail POP isn't going to be free for long. My experience has been that ever since yahoo announced the bigger index, yahoo's search is better too.
Google talk is an insult to the jabber protocol, their ego sucks, gmail has cool features, but yahoo mail is definately the way to go if you read more than AOL junkmail in your account. Drag and drop to folders, is a huge timesaver. - male73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haven't tried Yahoo beta and OddPost is news to me but from the looks of it, the mere fact that Yahoo seems to listen and tries to improve makes it worth considering. That I think is something on the upside considering my tendency to fawn over almost everything Google, viz.: http://male73.blogs.friendster.com/my_blog/2005/08/how_do_i_love_t.html
"A" for effort to Yahoo. - nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ya-who??
GMail pwnz j00 h4rdc0r3!!
/pardon the l33tsp33k...i use it only to make fun. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail needs an update
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail wins.
- louiem3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new yahoo mail looks like outlook, enough said. :) Gmail is quick, easy to use and not cluttered. I didn't see any ads in the yahoo mail beta screen shots but if the ads are anything like the current yahoo mails setup then I wouldn't use it. Yes gmail has ads too but they are text based and less obvious. Also POP3/SMTP, Mail Forwarding and Send As are very handy features.
Looks like I'll stick with gmail. - notman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the tips guys (about the delete button). If you'll notice though, it's more than myself that would like this fixed. Sure there are work arounds for my comments, but the problem is, why do users have to do these work arounds? Why not just make it part of the system.
Either way, I still like google the most. I don't like companies (like yahoo) that follow others who do something better rather than doing it from the start. Do you think yahoo would have increased their mailbox sizes if gmail hadn't come along? I am glad that they are making an effort to improve Yahoo's interface though since I have SBC's DSL (uses yahoo premium for their email). - kccdc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yahoo has done a great job looking like Outlook, only problem is that I hate outlook :-P"
That about sums up my feelings on the matter. Just because technology allows you the possibility to create something doesn't mean you should. Yahoo maybe revolutionary in their use of technology, but it seems only evolutionary compared to Google in terms of their user experience.
And why on earth anyone would still want to use folders in your email client after tasting Gmails labeling function is beyond me.
I thought Yahoo might have had a chance to turn themselves around sometime after late last year when they indicated they were going to be doing some pretty cool stuff, but this and a few other decisions only reflect that they still are about 10 steps behind Google. Heck, after seeing the video of the new Office for Vista, I think Microsoft is looking more exciting than Yahoo these days. That's sad. - suicidal-kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google wins!
