Kinda limited....only works on XP (no Mac, Linux) and my tuner card (Hauppauge PVR-150) isn't supported.
These are the tuner cards they currently support: · ATI TV Wonder Elite · ATI HDTV Wonder · AverMedia UltraTV 1500 MCE · Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2· NVidia Dual TVmce - saftaplan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope the Meedio plug-ins and skins will still be usable. That was one thing about Meedio that really rocked!
- Matrix_Prime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As much as I hate Microsoft, I LOVE the Media Center Edition of XP. It's flawless integration with my TV allows for ease of dowloading IPTV shows, video podcasts, whatever. I love it.
- luchid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I found a bug:
In the setup part it asks for the location of the folders containing your photos/videos/music. If you set any of them to a folder that has an accented letter in the name, the program will crash when launched.
Another annoyance: Only IP addresses from the US are accepted to run the program. I can understand not letting me watch american TV, but why not let me use the rest of the functions?
That's just silly, Yahoo. - info, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Google Beta -> pretty much ready for prime time
Microsoft Beta -> final product still 2+ years off
Yahoo Beta -> ? - tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I wonder if Google is going to attempt something similar. They wouldn't let Yahoo get one over on them!
- niai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5MediaPortal is a free open alternative for those who don't want to go down the *nix path.
http://www.team-mediaportal.com/ - mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This flat out suck for anyone who ever had anything to do with MYHTPC and Meedio. Way to go Pablo.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Microsoft's Media Center isn't free, right?
- smarusich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i think i'll just stick with Media Center and Myth for now.
- floatzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll stick with TiVo integrated with Y!
- giggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty slick stuff Yahoo! has going on...it is still a little buggy but once the bugs are worked out is could be really cool...I think.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i didn't see tivo in there anywhere.... they just did some sort of partnership with yahoo. i access yahoo services from my tivo. *shrug*
- kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a bit limited but i like it. After all it's still beta. It's for those who want Windows MCE but don't want to spend the cash. I also love the integration with LAUNCH.
- amitpagarwal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here's how to run Yahoo! Go outside the US
http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/04/how-to-run-yahoo-go-for-tv-anywhere-in.html - Matrix_Prime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no, its a variation on the XP OS.
- tkamen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I still can't believe Pablo sold to Yahoo. I have been a long time Meedio supporter but this move is just asstastic. The greatest part of the Meedio platform is the 3rd party add-ins. I highly doubt Yahoo will allow their precious little "product" to be "tampered" with by other peoples additions. I sincerely hope the Meedio community stays alive and continues to support the older builds of Meedio.
- Grimgrock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3TiVo has served me well since 3 months after its initial release. I've no desire to move to something else, free or otherwise. That said, at some point my series 2 TiVo will die and with the death of the lifetime subscription, I will be forced to month-to-month. At that point, I would be willing to look into something else but it sure as heck won't be based on a MS product. It doesn't feel right trusting my TV recording needs to a machine that needs a reboot once a week or once a day. I think the TiVo gets rebooted once or twice a year.
- luchid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got around the US Only limitation by setting IE to use an open US proxy and found another quirk: Why won't it let me view MY flickr photo albums instead of a pre-selected group of sets. I want my pictures, not somebody else's!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, meedio with a yahoo logo instead.
- Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd rather stick with MCE and MythTV for now (until something better comes along). Yahoo! is just too creepy for my taste.
- keebler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know what file type recorded TV is saved as in mediaportal or yahoo go? I would like an easy solution to convert recorded tv directly to DVD... any suggestions?
Third party file converters for MCE just weren't that reliable. - omnicore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4that depends on where you look and who you ask.
- weaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2GBPVR is a not-bad free alternative for XP, also.
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like media portal, but setting up the TV Guide is impossible. As soon as that gets automated, I'll be a full convert
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have an ATI AIW Radeon 8500 and I like the DVR software that comes with it. ( ATI DVR Software ) with its integrated GemStar Plus II guide. Works quite well and I'm happy with it.
It lets me watch video in a window, directly on the desktop, in a translucent desktop or translucent window.
Very slick.
Overall I'm happy with what it does. I don't need a DVR software to know about weather or play emulated games.
Only thing else I'd like is for skins and more options to remove commercials and save/transcode to DVD, AVI, MPG etc. - silverSurfer84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah ATI's AiW DVR software is pretty sweet and the GemStar guide is great. Although fani, I have an AiW X800 and you can select from different skins and there are multiple options for file encoding. The remove commercial option would be really nice though.
- luchid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a lil buggy, but I like it
- shodson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So what happened with their partnership with TiVo? Doesn't this put that relationship in jeopardy?
- sspirit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2only works in the US, doh
- odin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can automate it. just run xmltv
- luchid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or you could just set IE to use an open proxy in the US. Google "proxy list" and you'll get a ton of results. And you won't lose some functions like flickr photo viewing, etc.
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude are you that much of a Moron, Yahoo has tons of open APIs, and Konfabulator doesn't have external plugins or anything.
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah you need a supported TV card though
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is that an Apple Laptop?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dklimke/135547511/ - carlosglz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had my MediaCenter running for almost a year straight with no crashes or reboots... had to restart once because the power went out but that was it. I've personally tried Meedio, MythTV, BeyondTV, Media Portal and others... bottom line is that MS MediaCenter is a solid product.
- TwentyXD6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anybody know if this will work with a set-top box? like is there a way to make it change the channel? do any of the supported cards have an ir transmitter to change the channel on your set-top box?
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gringlock, I'm definately in the same boat. I have three Tivo PVRs, and without the ability to get a lifetime subscription, I'm probably going to spend the time and set up a MythTV system.
- rustysmoove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow it works great for me. ive been using sagetv but this is just as good if not better.and totally free.
- farkninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I can't manage to get it working, but hopefully one of you guys can.
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll stick with Beyond TV for now. I can have a dedicated DVR. I can program it from ANY PC on my network via a browser, AND I can program it while it records!
- gbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to use myHTPC before it turned into Meedio. I'm glad Pablo and the team are getting some moola + big time exposure now!
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3geez they just bought a company and they just launched the thing. give em some time to test it.
- niai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mediaportal supports getting automatic TV listings from the digital TV signal. I'm using DVB-T in the UK and get full listings. Before support for listings was stable I used XMLTV.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it shows the menu and then restarts my computer. I'll stick with MCE for now.
- amitpagarwal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Atleast the US-only limitation is removed.
http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/04/how-to-run-yahoo-go-for-tv-anywhere-in.html - gurm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@jamesey
I live in a country that doesn't have automated tvguide, so I use TVxb (http://www.tvxb.com/) to download guides from web pages and parse them into the tvguide XML format. I have it run daily with scheduler and it works like a charm after some initial configuring. - kimmellj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used GB Pvr it works alright but it has alot of bugs that would be simple enough to fix you would think but no one ever does and they can become a annoying. After going through all of the free programs I ended up just springing for beyond tv ... yes you have to pay but it also is incredibly simple to set up and you can access your stuff from an admin anywhere.
- dinki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree, GBPVR is a nice, stable and free PVR. http://www.gbpvr.com
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I cant login through it, what the hell?
