You guys will complain about anything.
WP may not be a bastion of software design (and I'm not saying it is, or isn't, I don't have the experience), but it's a great free blogging system. That's all most people care about.
Do you really think mom and pop blogging care about "the digg effect"? And lets face it, most of these blogs are probably running off cheap hosting that wouldn't survive the digg effect with a static html page.
I personally think that each WP release is getting better - at least from a user point of view. - tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15To be honest, if you're having to use business terms like value-add and ROI about wordpress, I think you're trying to use it for the wrong thing.
- dxprog, on 10/11/2007, -14/+27Until it suffers the digg effect
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15With statements like those, im betting that you're both going to open up the code to all of your projects for all of us to see, correct?
Judge not lest ye be judged.
The end product is what matters. I know from experience that taking a project well beyond its original intentions is begging for bad code. When you add a major feature after the fact, unless you have the time to rewrite your entire codebase every time you add a major feature. And, from experience, its not hard code to work in. I've severely modified WP for an install before, adding things that were well beyond a template/plugin and too specialized to take the time to build as an actual plugin, and needing more access to the core than plugins allow. I never once had a problem working in the code. There were, of course, things that I would have done differently, but it's not my place to complain.
Thats the thing about FOSS...you have no right or need to ever complain. If you dont like something, fix it, fork it, or forget it... - tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -16/+29http://www.duggmirror.com
Because come on, it's inevitably going to die any minute now... It's wordpress. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11The ROI on a free product...?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11There is sombody that works for you who is much smarter than you. Let them handle the software decisions.
- StrawberryFrog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8What is the value-add of WP?
Easy it will get you hosting a professional looking blog in no time flat, it loads of configuration, and all mod cons. I love it. Go on, ask a hard question. - Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I've tried many portal systems and was never happy with any of them. I came across Wordpress and created my "theme" within less than an hour. Now, for a hardcore coder, maybe the code is crappy.. I don't know.. and I don't care. I was able to get it to do what I wanted.
- bloobloo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Do you not have akismet installed then?
- betona, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Jeez, and I just upgraded (again) to 2.1.3 over the past weekend. I wish there was an upgrade script instead of manually finding all the bits and pieces to delete and keep as part of the upgrade.
Well, here I go again. - polyGone, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12Awww it's down. J/K :)
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Actually, its wordpress.org, not com. Org stands up to the digg effect nicely, as its just one site. You cant really blame .com for failing, since its hosting a ridiculous amount of sites pulling a huge amount of traffic on a daily basis.
- neoian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7They just need to work on making it a little more stable then it would be perfect. Hmm... a lightweight wordpress would be nice.
- ers35, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6You should try using Subversion for version management on your server:
http://wordpress.org/download/svn/ - neoknight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5well if you're blog runs fine then you don't need to upgrade.
Upgrade at a time when your doing more radical changes on your blog like design changes or new plugins etc... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I don't see YOUR blog software being used by many thousands of people out there. Do it better, or don't complain.
- feek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Well, one thing I can say so far is that it breaks the sidebar modules plugin. I imagine it has to do with widgets being built in. I guess I'll just have to rebuild my sidebar with Widgets!
- petewhite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5What happened to the days when we didn't have to update wordpress so often!
- releasor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5searching for "wordpress ubuntu" in title & description on ebay leads me to this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130112778734
"Yes, with APC and WP-Cache, this humble machine can survive the hits if your posts ever get Digged and/or Slashdotted :)" - chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"wordpress is very insecure i found so many security problems in it"
You found security holes, but cannot find the Shift key. Right umm hmm. - antongranik, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6WP Rocks! I love it!
- thatgirlismine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5What I'd really love to see is out of the box seperation of comments and trackbacks a la Movable Type. The way WP crams trackback quotes into the comment stream now really creates a mess.
- chubbymidget, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Those little sounds are little SQL servers screaming in pain.
- schalicto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There is a really bad-ass instant upgrade plugin script at the link
http://www.zirona.com/software/wordpress-instant-upgrade
-Josh - SarcasticBard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That depends on your theme. My theme keeps the two separate.
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It includes a number of new features, most notably Widgets integration, and over two hundred bug fixes and other improvements too. Not bad.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Thats the thing about FOSS...you have no right or need to ever complain"
And it's that attitude by FOSS advocates/developers that a) makes the community appear to be a bunch of elitist *****, b) pushes people away from free software.
The 'put up or shut up' attitude is what will prevent open source software, other than the big names, from getting anywhere. If I hear any developers of the FOSS I use towing the same line, I'll be deleting that software in a blink. It's criticism that pushes and improves products. Without it, you're pandering to the groupies and no-one else. - kcornwell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It would be nice if they finally, once and for all, fixed the gd [code] and [pre] tags.
- sirholio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You should do the world a favor and submit your findings to them.
- gmillerd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2lrn2read, mu.wordpress blogfarm
- lukemh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@v1ncent:
it does support multiple blogs. each WP install just uses same database... for different blogs, just setup with different mysql table prefixes. :) - chrismgtis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2spuy767: um, pal, those are forums not blogs.
- syafthegeek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The best blogging tools ever !
- takamalak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Try sNews. They just came out with a new version too.
http://solucija.com/home/snews/
It's all contained in one PHP file. - JosephDurnal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3The bloggers of the world, well, at least my wife have let out a big sigh and said, I have to upgrade that product, and all of my plugins, and then remove the plugins that won't work again?
- mooseman089, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What about the people who upgrade just before they put out the advanced warning?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Same here. If you search the forums, they have examples of how you can separate comments and trackbacks in your theme with just a little extra code.
- sirholio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They try for a 4 month product cycle
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I haven't upgraded any plugins since I started using WordPress over 6 months ago. Plus, version 2.2 has some kind of bad plugin detector.
- Gatchaman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Right on. Just upgraded to it minutes ago.
- HigherLogic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Try Spam Karma 2, stopped all my spam issues instantly:
http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/ - christopheles, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mine appears to have screamed so loud it chased away WordPress. But I didn't follow the upgrade directions.
My poor, poor database. I'll find a way. . . - SalemWin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good news. Thanks!
- diggality, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Would be great to have some kind of advanced warning before releases.
- vailancio248, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Wordpress 2.6 released
http://goatechno.blogspot.com/2008/07/wordpress-6- ... - kenok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Too bad Textpattern can't hold up to releasing updates or new versions of a CMS/blogging software. Wordpress is the way to go.
- diggality, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, for those who upgraded a day before the release it might.
- BGraceTFaith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I just hope they put back into "Options" the ability to show posts by number of days. They wacked it in 2.1 for some unknown reason.

What is Digg?
