    "When AMD launched Opteron in April 2003, it represented a departure from Intel's approach to 64-bit computing. While Intel had been pushing a brand new 64-bit instruction set for its Itanium processor, AMD chose instead to extend Intel's existing IA-32 instruction set with its AMD64 design. This allowed AMD to build processors that took advantage of the larger system memory and superior performance of 64-bit computing, but which could still run existing 32-bit applications."

  • j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And this is Microsoft's problem why? AFAIK Microsoft doesn't develop virus scanning software (yet). Does AVG work for XP x64 yet? I'm sure they'll have a version out shortly enough.

    Yes there are no released consumer anti-virus from the big 2 "Super AV" companies. Which doesn't mean that there is no AV available at all.
    I've been using Avast Anti virus on my RC2 of x64 since its release. Norton Corporate and McAffee Corporate are both available for x64. Nod 32 is coming out with a beta next week.
