- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57yeah, you really showed them.
- dogshaft, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Actually they stopped supporting win2k earlier this year didn't they?
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Yes...there are MANY people still running SP1. A lot of people either don't know about updates, or just don't care. Many of the computers I work on are running SP1. Some of these computers crashed while installing SP2 the first time, and the user is afraid to try it again.
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12If they're running SP1 because they don't know about the other updates, what difference does it make? It's not like their computers will suddenly stop working. It just means that future updates will require SP2 (or higher). But my point is, it doesn't make any difference because if they know about the updates that require SP2, then they would know about SP2. And if they don't know about SP2, then they won't know about the future updates, which means life will remain as it is.
- sirber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11you can disable it...

http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,2180,1911773,00.asp - obby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8sorry but that article is from January of 2006. Heck it still lists vista as coming out in 2nd or 3rd quarter of this year.. oops
- iZealot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think it due out in Summer 07 (search digg). It makes no sense as there are enough patches post sp2 to create a 3rd sp. Heck it would make reinstalling much easier.
http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,2180,1911773,00.asp - _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"I'm running SP1 because I don't need or want the dumb security manager"
You know you can turn it off if you want to, right?
EDIT: damn, sirber beat me to it :( - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I've not upgraded to SP2 either. Well, I did a while ago, and hated it (I've reinstalled Windows between then and now due to a harddrive screwing up). Yes, I could disable the security center, and that stupid message that comes up when ever I try to run an exe file. But, why? If I'm disabling these "security" features, theres very little reason to upgrade. I've used 3rd party patches for various vulns like the WMF exploit, combined with decent firewall rules, and a router, and a reasonably up to date virus scanner, I have no need for SP2. I never use Microsoft's support before, and really don't intend too..
- Ben - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's foolish to think you're completely safe just because you're running a 3rd party browser and have a hardware firewall. Other browsers have security flaws and exploits (just not as many or as dangerous as those of IE) as well. Viruses can still be accidentally downloaded/installed, etc. If you're smart about your habits, however, you will remain relatively safe.
I don't normally use SP2 on my personal Windows box, for many of the same reasons listed above. On a day to day basis, I only use my Windows box for a few relatively safe tasks, don't store any personal data on it, and keep any files that I need to hang onto on secondary or external drives. If a problem pops up, I can pop in my XP CD and reinstall.
That's not a practical solution for everyone, but it is fine for some people, and I'm sure that there are a lot of people out there who this does indeed work for, and as such, are still running SP1. :)
As far as the Mac comment goes...it's true, actually. As it currently stands, there are no malware or viruses that are actively circulating for Mac OS. Of course some exist, but not many, and those that do aren't spreading. That doesn't mean you're necessarily safe from "hackers" of course, but it's a much safer OS than the Windows fan club makes it out to be. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah i was on sp1a too because i didnt like the security manager. You can disable it, then totally disable it in services.msc
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@dogshaft they stopped supporting windows 98 & ME but 2000 is still good...
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if u kno how to maintain a healthy computer using SP1, then u dont need service reps in india to help you out...
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5does he have a bootleg version?
- iZealot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx
Second half of 2007 - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This might be pertinent to businesses, but you'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many home computers are still plodding along with Windows 98 and ME.
- Whitey04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe they can take the last few features out of Vista and put them in XP SP3 ;-).
Except the crown jewel: 3D desktop of course. You need to shell out the bucks for that productivity enhancer. - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone that hands me a linux CD gets punched in the face. I don't need a pizza delivery boy telling me what OS to use.
- blackbelt88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I used to use a system with SP1 as my main system up until a few months ago. I tried SP2 once but it messed up so I just didn't feel like bothering with it again. Honestly, if you're smart, you don't really need support from Microsoft. I haven't had spyware/virus problems in years.
- deucer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9I've been using SP1 since it came out.
Why would I need support from Microsoft? Their downloads give me more headaches than I've ever had. If you are smart about your computer and what sites you go to (looking at you Syrrys) you don't need them. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol kinda funny since people were saying nah I'm not getting service pack 2 or 3 then compain their ass off when support ends for service pack 1.
- shawnlane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using Microsoft Windows for over 10 years and I have never contacted technical support. This is certainly not a big deal. Most people when they need help turn to the internet.
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We are paying for an extended support contract, unfortunately we still have Sp1 machines floating around.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"compain their ass off when support ends for service pack 1"
Ot whine about bugs / security. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What are you talking about? Suddenly you know what OS'es I run? My main box at home runs XP SP2, Vista RC1 and Ubuntu (at work at the moment).
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I forget why I still have sp1. It's probably something to do with WGA being required.
The best part is, I know of many people who get viruses/trojans/etc while using sp2, because they're morons. I protect myself, rather than rely on Microsoft. If you don't have anything between you and the nasties other than ms patches, you're in a worse way than I'll ever be. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Windows 2000 is still fine... its 98 & ME they u want to run and hide from...
- Whitey04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fanboys.
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am sticking with SP1. Wasn't there a patch a while back a while (I think it was either in SP2 or around then) that made it so 'high risk' updates are automatically downloaded even if automatic updates are 'disabled'? I feel like I've heard that somewhere. Regardless, I prefer SP1 because it's just less hassle. All I use is iTunes because my 5-year-old Mac doesn't have the harddrive capacity.
- iZealot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mcfly1204 I duped you lol, sorry.
obby its old but accurate

Second half of 2007 - JustinT9669, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7i agree. but most people aren't smart with PCs. I can believe I still see people running IE6. And most of these dumb people end up going for a Mac because they think they would be safe.
- sjankis630, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My company just this past week (we are a division in a large Govt contractor) started pushing out Windows XP SP2! Me and one other guy in my group are still on Windows 2000! We are all not into the latest and greatest. It took them that long to totally test XP2 on all of our platforms.
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think getting rid of support for SP1 is a good thing...hopefully it will make people get SP2, make computers just a little more safe for the average user :o)
- SyberMile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1the bootleg copys work better
- VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0And this matters why? Honestly. When was the last time YOU actually contacted anyone for tech support? (I'm talking to the Diggers who might actually have a brain, not the mindless drones who buy computers at Best Buy and actually purchase the replacement plan ripoff) I haven't talked to tech support for ANY of my home systems since 1996. That's ten years of not needing support since they tend not to know much about what the ***** going on anyway. And when they do, then they act too high and mighty to actually help you. In my case I spent a little time and effort actually learning the systems I have inside and out. This includes building them. Slogging through the creep of Microsoft crap until my liberation with Linux in 1997. Then learning how to do ANYTHING I want with a Linux box. The closest I've come to support in these ten years is using the online forms at Maxtor to generate my own RMA for their ***** drives. (DO NOT BUY MAXTOR IF YOU VALUE YOUR DATA!!) That's it. Support for an OS is a ridiculous concept.
- VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Well since you've been nice enough to help them all out of course they're plodding along with YOU. ;P On the other hand I've given everyone in my address book a Linux CD-ROM and I haven't heard from them since. Linux: idiot repellent.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I'm running SP1 because I don't need or want the dumb security manager
- valenciastudent, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2WGA Party time baby!
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Man my uncle is pissed because whenever i tired to Update to SP2 it failed and wouldn't go past a certain step, I have no idea why but its ***** annoy, I hate when software doesn't work.
- musntSurfatWork, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4I'm doing just fine with DOS 6.22, thank you very much. Surfing the internet 1 byte at a time.
- DisgruntledGurl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1It's been my experience that SP1 functions better than SP2 for XP Pro unlike Home. Either way, I don't bother with updates.
Just my 2ยข... - JustinT9669, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8Any news on when SP3 is coming out?
- Whitey04, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3You wouldn't need support if their software didn't suck in the first place.
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I've been using SP1 since its release also. I've turned updates completely off, don't need them to bother me. I just don't want to deal with WGA or Windows enhanced security. I'm a smart user, use Firefox, and am behind a hardware firewall, I have basically nothing to fear.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -23/+10its called Vista... haha
- mcfly1204, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1Is it the 10th already?
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -32/+1lol, would that be funny and microsoft release a press release that they ain't support that anymore too ;)
- Syrrys, on 10/12/2007, -50/+8Hahaha I'm still running 2k on both of my main computers.
Suckers!
