- drm237, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41An hour ago, I used the download manager and got 1.2-1.3MB/s over my FiOS connection! It took just over a half hour to download the entire thing. Since my DVD burner will only burn on 1x, it takes longer to burn then to download...how twisted is that.
- SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29It is. I installed it yesterday. Initial install is faster and much improved over Beta 2 and earlier CTPs. Also, it's noticeably faster and has a smaller memory footprint, and the LUA dialog box nags are much reduced. Install went without a hitch. Actually, it was flawless. Device driver database is much improved; everything was detected automatically. Threw my Office 2007 Pro Plus Beta on it and that too went without a hitch. It even found my company's GroupWise server and connected to my mailbox using Outlook without issue.
So far I haven't found anything wrong with it. Everything just works. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Small warning, if you're downloading using Safari's download manager, you wont be able to stop the download and resume form where you left off. You'll have to start all over again. You have been warned!
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Wait a bit longer and you'll be able to download the final version of Vista.
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20100,000 people + the whole world's bittorrent community
- 1nd1g0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16A T1 is only 1500Kbps. You must have something else.
- byronm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Give it a shot before you doubt MS.. that earlier beta was 200 builds ago and has vastly improved.
The more people that use this, the more data they get. - RoboTronDeluxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13you're supposed to use the same key that you used for beta 2.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17My bittorret was all a waste.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Wow talk about a thread full of stupid.
1."Vista is nice and all but it's still just Windows."
Wow, fanboy much? I could say "Ubuntu is nice, but it's still just linux" but that doesnt mean it makes sense.
2.Vista graphics aren't copied from Mac OS. They don't even look alike. It's fine you like your mac, but that isn't a license to blabber like an idiot. - therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"Installing this build requires a valid Product ID. Please use the same Product ID that was provided to you when you signed up for the Beta 2 CPP."
- rickbauls, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I use wget as my download manager : )
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10OK, just for reference (yes I freakin know its been posted before):
VERSION: Vista PRE-RC1 (not RC1) Build 5536
SIZE:~2.5GB
ISO TYPE: DVD
Also, your "Beta 2" key is upgraded to work with this PRE-RC1, so the fact that it works is not an overlook by MS. They want as many people testing this as possible. - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14get rc1 from here:
http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/prerc1/en/x86/download.htm
Not sure what the difference is besides the larger file...
3.13 gb dvd iso
There is no changelog anywhere - shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I mean 2 OC3 lines. Someone said it was T1 around here but not according to the IT website for the school.
- tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I run a mac side-by-side with my intel core 2 duo PC running windows XP.
I have a 24 inch dell widescreen and can switch between the two systems simply by pressing a button.
I prefer the PC. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9No resume supported ? Okay, forget that. I'll wait for RC1 which should be out in a few days.
In the meantime, I'll go try to find my Beta2 cd-key. - rebelyell2k5, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11i wouldnt wait for that.
or at least don't hold your breath while you do.
you'll die. - Dawnspire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There are an enormous amount of changes, beta 2 was months ago
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They aren't making it public per-say, they are making it available to the first 100,000 people.
- compuwarescc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dual booting XP and Vista is a pain in the ass, but it can be done - I have two computers setup dual-booting vista/XP.
You have to create a new partition for Vista (PartitionMagic works well for this, resize your existing partition and make a new one for Vista), or use an extra hard drive... then you have to get familiar with Vista's new boot manager "BCD" - do a google search for BCDedit to get XP loading properly.
Definitely backup all your important Stuffs before trying. - byronm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6PS, you can install this as an upgrade without Burning it to DVD. The Vista installer copies every file it needs to the install space prior to any reboot cycle so you don't have to do any tricks other than run a "Virtual CD" program to mount the ISO and run Setup.exe
Of course if you want a fresh install - burn and boot off the DVD.
The virtual cd program will mostlikey need to be upgraded/re-installed post upgrade but i have done this on darn near 100 installs on different releases and systems so i wouldn't be making so many coasters. - jetta421, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Man, I think when this download is done tomorrow I am going to get rid of my AOL dialup account.
- alienvenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here's how to download it with wget, using the info page as the referer:
wget --referer="http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/prerc1/en/download.html" http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/prerc1/en/x86/iso/vista_5536.16385.060821-1900_vista_rc1_x86fre_client-lr1cfre_en_dvd.iso - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5People are digging him down for bragging. It adds nothing useful to the discussion.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Giant leap.
The UI is much nicer - not just in "eye candy" but in usability. It isn't really so much any one thing you can point to but rather the "fit and finish" is just so much nicer and all the small changed add up.
Among all the "under the hood" changes the security model is better. You can actually USE Vista as a non-admin user the way everyone has always wanted to be able to really use MS products.
Thers really too much to go into - the important thing is that it feels for the first time liek a complete 'environment" and liek the whoel thing fits rather than a collection of utilities and parts. It feels much more "together" the way Apple fanbois have always claimed Windows never will :) - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am official beta tester or whatever you would call it for Vista (installed this build a week ago). I had no problem setting up a dual boot. My XP partition is the primary active partition, and i have a secondary 15 gig partition that i formatted for Vista to use.
Booted off the Vista DVD, told it to install to that 15 gig partition, vista installed, and when i restart theres a bootloader that looks different than XP's, but you're presented with 2 options
"Previous version of Windows" and
"Microsoft Windows Vista"
Vista is the default, but within vista you can change the default OS almost the same way as you would do it in XP, but you have to do it from Vista, not accessable in XP.
So have no worries, as long as you have a free partition, it works great. I've been doing this the last 5-6 builds. - byronm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Huge changes over Beta2
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uhh, the one this digg is linking to.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you want AOL to stop billing you, it'd be easier to change your name and move to Mexico.
- alienvenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is confusing indeed.
- Almadiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And have you tried Vista? Otherwise you are in no position to criticize.
- CrazyRussian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+62 things I have to say about that...
1. Then why make it available to the public, have it only available to the people with a key
2. I signed up for the Vista Beta2 program all the way back at the beginning, they never sent me a key, but once when I downloaded a 64bit version, the website just gave me a key with the download. Will that key work? (it was for build 5384) - shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that's way faster than a T1, kiddo...
- delhokie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52.58GB and slow going... d/l in browser if you're confident in your connection as d/l manager is slow.
- billizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Eh, just hit up usenet in a couple hours.
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4expiration date of July 2007 the same time vista will officially be released?
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I got one in my email
- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5FYI - This build works with BootCamp without having to delete your EFI partition. Just as easy to install as XP SP2.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I personally love the new Windows, it's really nice to see something new.
And to the "It mimics mac osx"
Eeeeeeeh....Yeah.....How exactlly is that a problem?
I get to have a computer I can upgrade, play computer games, etc. etc. and have an OS that makes me happy and feeling that I am not missing anything out from not owning a mac. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Also check out VistaBoot Pro. It's free and has a nice GUI for setting all of the BCD options, as well as adding and removing the BCD bootloader completely.
- rmw132, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So how do I get a key? Or am I too late?
- cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5build 5536
http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/prerc1/en/x86/iso/vista_5536.16385.060821-1900_vista_rc1_x86fre_client-lr1cfre_en_dvd.iso - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4XGL/Compiz is overrated. When it can run using less than 100mb of ram, and not ballon to over 50% CPU usage on my X2 4800+ maybe I'll give it another shot. Even the admitadly sluggish Vista beta2 used less system resources to run it's eye candy.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6greekgoat:
shut up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because Beta 2 was a dog, I chucked it and the key (net expecting this). Anyone have an idea on how I can get my key back, or failing that, a valid Beta 2 key?
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And Microsoft says that there probably won't be updating from Pre-RC1 to RC1, you have to reinstall it.
- cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I used Flashget. It didn't directly allow resuming, so I just paused and resumed the download. Resuming works great :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here are 16 screenshots if anyone is interested:
