- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only problem I had with the registry was that every program could have entries in 10 different places and obscurely named references.
If everything was more organized I wouldn't mind it. - djork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3HOLY CRAP! CONFIGURATION FILES FOR APPLICATIONS! Where did they get this idea? /etc? or ~/Library/Preferences? Certainly not! It's 100% pure innovation!
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I might be in the minority but Vista might be shaping up to be better than originally thought...
- ThePharaoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it's about time. The registry has been the bane of Windows' existence since it first began using it. The technology world always steals ideas from each other. We wouldn't be where we are if everyone stayed in their own little world. If that were the case then the Open Source community would not even exist.

However I still find myself "unexcited"... I'm not sure why but I'm not. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, impressive. Microsoft is so smart.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok now that I've read the entire article I have more than sarcastic remarks to make. Windows Vista is starting to sound a lot better. Just the fact that they are using XML files for meta data is exciting enough. For some reason anything with XML in it gets me excited. Also goodbye GDI hello Avalon (WPF)!
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah XML is going to making customizing and accessing files A LOT eaiser and better, plus other apps can access XML. I think thats what there gonna use in the new Office too...
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1something you guys are forgetting.. this could make it faaaar more difficult to detect malware. malware scanners depend heavily on the registry (invalid keys, etc). this will just make it easier to hide the malware in obscure xml documents. they may, however, have more difficulty being as prollific on an infected system....
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HOLY CRAP! CONFIGURATION FILES FOR APPLICATIONS! Where did they get this idea? /etc? or ~/Library/Preferences? Certainly not! It's 100% pure innovation!
-- Indeed. Innovation at it's best lol. But hey, I'm not going to slam them for following good ideas. - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dwntwnboi, the malware will still have to communicate with the
OS thru the same message queue. All you need to do is monitor
that queue for malware.
And the other security features of Vista have the potential of
keeping programs from being able to put obscure xml documents ;
all over the system. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Friggin A!
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't Windows use configuration files before the registry anyway? INI files.
- thetonio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude. I need no other reason to buy Vista.
- Weaselboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey look the .ini files are back.
- kraken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"one thing....what happens to all the programs that depend on the registry now?"
The article said there would be a virtual registry for the programs that still depend on the registry. - teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Vista: The beginning of the end for Windows
- MrZaiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SO basically if theres any spyware it will go to the virtual registry? and our beloved anti-spywares will still be able to search the registry??? Or we will end up licking the pie off bill gate's face???? we will see!
- Hey15Bob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one thing....what happens to all the programs that depend on the registry now?
- isoprophlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft is so L33T. I can't wait for new vistas of crashing.
- masskurec, on 03/01/2009, -0/+0and the almighty calc
http://xptweak.net - JasonZBell, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0Maybe I need to convert from XP. I recently had to buy a registry cleaner to fix my PC. Bought it from http://www.pc-registry-repair.com
- cal0001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0have to hand it to them they are only 10 years behind
- crankx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If windows continues to borrow from other people for their innovations maybe we can end the arguments with Microsoft OS XI the next generation of operating system. Then all of the microsoft fanboi's will come on over. It won't hurt so bad when the come over if they have a pretty microsoft box to hold..
- Speed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft was screwed eitehr way. If they didn't add those features you'd be saying "why the ***** didn't they learn from Mac OSX and Linux?", now that they added them they are theives.
- rmcc8, on 09/20/2008, -0/+0I use this service to fix my windows registry. you better check this out.
http://registry-cleaners-soft.com/ - thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woo!! I like the idea of having different install images on one disk, no more copying each file one by one during install. This WIM though, sounds alot like Apples .Apps..
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0crankx stop compaining everyone steals from everyone for example, widgets. ummmmmmmmmmmmm KONFABLATOR. Grapgic User interface that apple had first ummmmmmmmmmmmm Xerox. Dude apple steals from other ppl too so stop saying apple is loyal and make up their own ideas
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the registry. I'm NOT looking forward to "missing ini file" errors again (for example). As well, how much of a bee-yatch is it going to be to backup all these 'little' files. It's one of the reasons MS created the registry so I don't get it. Either you have one folder with all the "ini" files in it (or like they did before, mix them in with the windows dir), or you have one, easy to backup, easy to find registry. I don't know if this is a step forward or backwards.
As for the 'virtual registry', it's just a migration tool, like how WinXP keeps the Win.ini, boot.ini and System.ini around... for support of old apps. No big deal, but now we'll have to keep track of all these little files, the registry and our old ini files? Nice. - F1LT3R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows has had widgets for years, such as the almigty... "Clock"
- HesNikke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah, but MS-DOS was a CP/M clone (CP/M was later renamed DR-DOS) that microsoft /bought/ for a measly $50,000
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS
The PC industry has been around for a lost more than 10 years :P - Agent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People saying this is "borrowed" from somewhere seem to forget that Microsoft used INI files before the registry. The article itself mentioned it, so I don't know how you missed it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The articule didtn say that Vista would be the end of the registry but that the rigistry would be discontinued years after Vista but that they're on their way to gettin ri of it. What everybody should do is just forget wikrosoft and go with linux. Linux is soooooooooooo much better you noobs.
- crankx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I remember INI files I also remember a time when programs ran in one directory and no INI was used it was called DOS so step off and understand I know what microsoft has borrowed and what is original I was a PC guy for 10 years I don't hate microsoft I just like mac better.
- crankx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i know that (hes) I said that I have been a pc guy for ten years not that pc's have been around for only ten years.
- crankx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I never said they were thieves I said they borrowed it from OS X, I want Microsoft and Apple to merge and create a new world order. Heh.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0but i like changing around my start up screen and making my start button say *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!??!
- crankx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0widgets ... were around in os 7 they were in the little control strip in 8 and 9 so just do your research before you direct your post at me. I am just stating the obviuos.
