- randomtask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad you won't be able to enjoy Media Center when playing DRM content on your brand new 42" DVI HDTV...
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, this is the first compelling thing MS has done with Vista. As long as its not part of the "Professional" version (or an install option) then its a good idea (my staff dont need an MCE installation at their desk).
- aetherane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a very smart move by Microsoft - I think it'll really make their products sell
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About damn time!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Better and better....
- s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this was a excellent move... many bitched about the Media Extender feature in 360 because of the small amount of market saturation of MCE... despite building one (and using it religously) myself (and thus on the other side of that demographic) I had to concur... the issue of Vista's extreme DRM model (you know the feature that obsoleses just about every HD capable display device) has not been addressed yet, has it?...
- RabidPuppet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wasn't one of the reasons the original (current) Media Center required OEM support and not available as an upgrade was because of strict harware support and driver issues? Does this news suggest there might be new hardware requirements or restrictions for a Vista PC or for current PCs to upgrade to Vista?
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we are talkin about Microsoft right? The pickey company that never does anything right.
- Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They aren't doing everything right, because the 360 isn't going to have DVI or HDMI connections... very stupid move IMHO.
- giovani, on 09/19/2008, -0/+0COME ON... there are plenty of FLOSS alternatives out there, that do best than MCE, specially the UI and user experience... There is a very comprehensive comparison chart in http://www.telematicsfreedom.org/en/flossmediacent ...
- gab_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Xbox 360 + vista with WMC support will be pretty sweet !
- Bannana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now how much will it be?
- Remmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the recent comments about the RIAA and the MPAA being heavily considered during the development of Vista, I'll avoid it like the plague.
- paulbram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"requiring a video capture card to check email is a bit of a stretch."
This doesn't make sense. You don't need a video capture card or tuner for current MCE machines so what makes you think it will be required for Vista? If you don't have a TV tuner, you don't see the TV menu in MCE. It's that simple. - oh_em_bree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0windows media center as an OS is the worst thing ever. If they use any of the ideas from that OS in vista it will be a pain. I currently use media center and it is the hardest thing to use when it comes to installing just about anything. I literally had to sit for 2 hours when I installed UT2k4 (from the cds on a 2.5 ghz with 1 gig of ram)
- EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^
They keep removing stuff so they had to throw something to fill out the feature list :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone that thinks this is good idea does not understand... ever herd of DRM! They want to force stuff down your throat and want you to pay for it WOW. This almost will confirm recording industry's invite in their software. I wish i could lead people by the hand this way.
Think about having the MPAA and RIAA in your Operating System...you guys are so smart. - mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow this sounds cool, I'm not overly concerned about the DRM stuff cause it will probably be stupidly easy to get around. Although Microsoft probably already knows this and is just doing it to get the MPAA and RIAA off their arse.
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was actually hoping they were going to make media center a home domain server.. oh well
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet!
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the hell are you smoking? THE only difference between WinXP Pro and MCE is that extra menu program that's driven by a remote control that they include. It's COMPLETELY independent to the OS.
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand what's the hype about DMR. The only bad thing about DMR is that there's no standard, and that different providers can use their own encryption (i.e. iTunes and...Walmart). Microsoft will NOT stop supporting the standards (such as MP3, MPEG, etc, etc) so you shouldn't have to worry about DMR "taking over."

Yes...but for most honest people who buy the stuff don't get the quality they paid for because of this ***** MS is doing. - peteresch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with rabidpuppet. The reason Media Center Edition is not available over-the-counter is the hardware requirements. While the requirements for Vista are high, requiring a video capture card to check email is a bit of a stretch.

yah but that isn't going to stop all the anti-Microsoft zealots from griping about it. - Vulture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too late in my opinion..Why should we have to wait til November 2006 to be able to stream movies to the xbox? Microsoft screwed the pooch when they decided not to let the xbox stream movies from non MCE PCs. I know they could have done it!! IMO if I had a MCE PC it would be right next to my xbox, so why would I need to stream from it? Microsoft's greed (boos/maintain sales of MCE) to not is going to hurt xbox 360 sales in the long run...RIP...
- junkyinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they had to throw something in..
- digitaldd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess beyondTV will go out of business when Vista becomes common place..
Hopefully these folks keep developing media portal http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net/ - infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AHA! I knew they were going to do this! I can't wait to pirate it.
- dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0so what does the FAG in STFUFAG mean? *grin*
- FamilyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Seriously, gamerzworld. What the hell is your problem. Microsoft obviously DOES do everything right, because I'm pretty sure that they are rolling in money.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"We are talkin about Microsoft right? The pickey company that never does anything right."
No, we are talking about the Microsoft that obviously does do everything right because they are market leaders. STFUFAG. - FamilyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Seriously, gamerzworld. What the hell is your problem. Microsoft obviously DOES do everything right, or at least MANY things right, because I'm pretty sure that they are rolling in money.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You can't knock the hustle. ***** Apple.
