It's not really open. - Konquest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Actually, I'm running on Messenger Live since one month or so, but I'm not a priviledged beta tester. I just went at http://ideas.live.com and entered my email. Everyone can do so! :)
- ffachopper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, it is open for general public now, not only official beta testers.
I just received my beta invitation, so you may receive it anytime soon. - grimfandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5biggest changes -
1) appearance - the old version looked clunky
2) off-line messages - when people sign in they get your message
3) folder sharing - easier to send groups of files
4) rename contacts - give your contacts nicknames
5) live contacts - when people update their details, it updates for you too - esteban, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, it looks like on this one Digg is a little late :)
- ffachopper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Full Story:
Be the first to trial Windows LiveTM Messenger
The new Windows LiveTM Messenger Beta is the next-generation MSN Messenger and, as always, it is free to download.
It has everything you already love about Messenger – your contact list, emoticons, and plenty of ways to access to your friends via text, voice and video – plus new ways to connect and share documents with magical ease.
When you move to the new Windows Live Messenger, it will be like upgrading from one MSN Messenger version to the next. All your contacts will move with you, as will all your personalised elements (emoticons, winks, user tiles, themes, etc…). - dvdcr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6hey i like the new messenger, i have been using it for 2 months and it is a lot better... but thats just me.
yes, - digg this comment u *****. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kind of a memory hog. It's running 13 MB at idle, that is when it's minimzed. When you open it up to see the buddy list but don't talk to anyone, it hogs 29 MB. I don't know anyone that uses MSN Messenger, so I'm out of luck. So, in terms of memory use, it's similar to AIM (which I don't use anymore).
- fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3been on it for 3 months, but the most recent update caused it to crash all the time :(
- YJ2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've had it a while ago, but I went back to 7.5. Couldn't stand the animated advertisements, and it was consuming a lot of resources.
- demesne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You can remove the ads using a resource editor like ResourceHacker
- Cykaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://apatch.ikhost.com/downloads.php
This is a nifty patcher that does pretty much anything you would want for Messenger and Messenger Live. You can remove ads, enable it to run more than one copy at a time, remove cetain buttons or options from menus.. - grimfandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hate the messenger adverts? google for "apatch" - it safely removes all advertising with a few clicks. no spyware.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2umm this is request to sign up, this has been out since the project was first started.
- grimfandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2apatch was released within 24 hours of every beta build ...no advertising here... ;^)
- mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Honestly, I don't understand why it's necessary for it to be so hideous! Is there some sort of next-gen technology antichrist that's just sucks the aesthetics out of everything they're doing now? What's funny is, I've been on the betas now for a while, and they keep entirely changing the way thing looks, but it's just another kind of ugly all over again!
Apple please make a messenger so MS can copy how it looks please... - zone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3could anyone plz tell me wich version this thing is? im currently in 8.0.0566, but the one in the screenshot looks diferent.. ugly actually.. and i like the one i have, so i dunno if i should update or wait some time. thanks
btw, anyone with msn messenger.. if u don know http://a-patch.tk/ you should try it out. - ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why it's just MSN messenger with more ad's, more commercial tie-ins!
Sounds like an upgrade to me!
I think I will keep my hacked, ad-free Messenger - meatypuffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tested it out for a month or so. It's kind of nice, but bloated. I didn't use most of the features available, mostly because none of my friends wanted to test it out either, so I couldn't try the whole 'Shared Folder' with any of them. Noobs. I noticed it was kind of a memory hog though, usually 40-45 mb if I remember correctly. Granted, it is still beta, so that could explain some of it. I went back to the stable 7.5 because the extra memory used wasn't worth all the wasted features I didn't have a use for, and I missed the extra functionality of Messenger Plus and a couple of the plug-ins I used with it, and Plus didn't work on the beta version I used.
- Xgkkp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5System Requirements (from the site):
Pentium 233 MHz process (500 MHz recommended)
Microsoft Windows XP
Minimum 128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended)
- can XP even run on a computer that slow? - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You have the latest version of the Beta Messenger.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Portuguese / Brazilian : http://www.htk.com.br/noticia.php?noticia=242
---------------------------------------------------
http://www.htk.com.br/ - jazzwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I liked the older Messenger Live Beta alot more than the latest one (it felt NEWER). You could hover over the Alias's of online contacts and you could see what you could do with them (voice chat, video chat, ect).
You lose some of these new interface enhancements with the new version. In the end, it still looks more refined than Messenger 7. - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not going to get it until later. From what I see, there really isn't much improvement except for visuals. It still has absolutely annoying features which are designed for preschool girls (the "winks" or "nudges"... who the hell needs that stuff???)
Also, MSN plus and plugins allows me to block their excessive advertising that they have floating all over the place.
The only reason I use MSN at all apposed to trillian, is because trillian doesn't support webcams on msn properly. - bluesaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4OK I am trying it out. .... But as far as I can see there doesn't seem to be any major changes except the changed the name to LIVE
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well XP can run on that computer, just real slowly. However According to Microsoft, the minimal system requirements for XP is a 350 MHz processor w/ 64 MB RAM. Of course, people have run XP on "worse" hardware.
- seanabernethie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well u need IE6SP1 for some of the tabs that use IE as a plugin to view web contect such as the built in block cheka and seriously more people have IE than any other browser so its a more inteligent choice to use IE than anything else
just clering that up - techpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where to download? it just ask for an email address.
- olorinpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually they just redid the design fairly recently. It looks waaay better now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1exactly...
they only invite people who digg this topic :P - grimfandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no can do
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2+digg for you ;)
- jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No thanks!
- KoZo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's been hanging on my system. There are times when we can't even connect to the server.
- jazzwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jeeze dude... are you running @ 640x480 pixels?! ...Because... It's really not THAT much of a space hog. :P (My Trillian Window is *gasp* a few pixels wider!)
As for the advertisements... the patcher posted above remedies that. - Myst3r1o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Windows LIVE MSN 8 is the real deal, has many awesome features and hell, even looks good too.
- Denjira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks more colourful than the version I have...
mine's just silver - dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the version of messenger I have now. Even though I rarely use it, i have the advert removed, the window semi-transperant, sending as many nudges as I want as fast as I want, and lots of other things.
- RADicalSatDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A-Patch Ads begone http://apatch.tk/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never really understood why a lot of people bitched about MSN Messenger, clearly there are patches that can remove the ads, if the ads are your only concern then they can easily be removed.
Everyone seems to favour AIM over MSN too, which I never understood. AIM is garbage, it also has ads, but the interface is clunky and nasty looking and those goddam IM noises are enough to make you want to kill yourself. It looks crappy, especially in contrast to XP. At least with MSN it looks good, has way more features etc. Even GAIM sucks, it lacks a lot of the great features of MSN and I suspect that most of the GAIM users are people who think they are cool or god forbid "hip" for using it.
Meebo - Don't even bring Meebo into this, it's not even relevent. If your browser crashes you lose all the IM's, plus what's so bad about having a client on the computer, it's not that bad really now is it?
There's a lot of people in the UK etc that use MSN over AIM for good reason.
The new beta looks fine, stop complaining. I was a diehard 7.5 until today when I installed the beta, and believe me I have tried the beta several times over the last few months but was never liking it as much as 7.5, well now I have been converted. It looks great and with the patch installed it beats 7.5 hand over fist, and aim.
I want to see more MSN fans here, because everyone seems to be hating on messenger, and I suspect that it is maybe because it is Microsoft and it's cool to hate or them or...? I don't know. MSN rocks.
"This looks, aesthetically speaking, like crap." - Have you seen AIM recently??
And as for spyware, what spyware? Run your Adaware if you're that paranoid. Stop hating. - wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been on the beta for about three months, the latest version is 8.0.0566 and does not look like the screenshot on the site provided in the Digg. In the three months I've had it, it has never crashed, but it does take up a lot of memory (40 - 50MB). It also takes a long time to startup, but I believe this might be because of the servers it's connecting to.
If you're interested in giving feedback on the beta, please visit:
http://spaces.msn.com/messengersays
The UI will see further updates before the final version is released and I assume the final version will also have interoperability with Yahoo Messenger.
If you don't like the adverts and would like polygamy amongst other things, you can apply the A Patch, which has been linked to in comments above. - jtrost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 SP1 or later must be installed on your computer, though it does not need to be your default."
Looks like Microsoft knows it's losing its web browser songhold. - sublime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is just a link to a website to submit your email address. There is no link to download the software. Inaccurate and misleading story

I rest my case. MSN running the A-Patch. - KillerTarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah that is an old one, I have been part of the beta since about December or so and that was the original beta that I got. They have made a lot of changes since that build. As for a protocol change I don't think they have done that because I can still log in with trillian even though my account has been flagged as being part of the beta.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why would it have ads in it? it's microsoft! they have more money than anyone, they really need the 50 cents some porn site pays to advertise there? Just isuse gaim.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Fully 60% of the screen real estate was taken up by advertisements or other content that's not a necessary part of the application.
SO TRUE! - grimfandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They *have* changed protocol versions, but during your beta registration your account was "flagged" as compatible with the new version. You can now run the old and new versions - they won't turn off your old version because if you decide you don't like the beta, you wouldn't be able to go back to Messenger 7.5. Once MS has finished v8, and forced everyone to upgrade, you can bet they'll turn off the old protocol and Trillian (et al) will be playing catching just like last time this happened.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thanks mate i recomend that to every body, so simple no really im pretty dumb so if i can u can
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I think that MSN Messenger has superior features to AIM, and in Canada that's all anyone uses. But as a question to all you Americans, does MSN have any market penetration down there?
