- bradford, on 10/12/2007, -4/+103Pirates will win, because Vista Ultimate costs an Arrrrrrrrrm and a leg. (A wooden leg.)
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52i am offended at the implication of NOT being a pirate.
- bowels, on 10/12/2007, -10/+52We can help Microsoft out, and remove any possibility of being a pirate, by never running Vista.
Then we would only be pirating Microsoft's intellectual property in Linux, but luckily, that doesn't have WGA. - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47you might be a pirate if: you have an eye patch...
you might be a pirate if: you have a wooden peg-leg...
you might be a pirate if: you have a parrot on your shoulder...
you might be a pirate if: if you say "Yarr" a lot... - calebhawk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37they need to quit listening to Jeff Foxworthy...
If you install this software without paying for it, you might be a pirate...
next thing ya know when your copy of Vista completes a task a pop-up window will come up and say "Git-r-done!"
Seriously Microsoft don't rip off comics... that's Mencia's job - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36That's right, we're pirates; Bill Gates is King George III, and the internet is the New World.
No activation without representation?
It's time to do away with the Microsoft Tax. - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I think when it comes to WGA, the whole philosophy of 10 guilty men should go free before one innocent man is convicted definitely fits.
I have no problem with Microsoft trying to stop piracy, just so long as they don't go off bothering people with legit copies. Hell, I'm using a legit copy of XP because it came with my Thinkpad. I also wouldn't hesitate to pirate a copy (don't even know how many XP cds are burried in my desk) if I needed to. If I were using a pirated copy, I would only expect MS to try and stop me, and that is their right and responsibility. But, if I suddenly saw "You may be a pirate" or whatever on my legit copy, I'd be a little more than upset.
Sorry for the rambling post, im a wee bit tired right now. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19"might"?
I hope they fix that bug soon. - jfujita, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16http://youtube.com/watch?v=bEBbu-wkKrs
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I hope you're using the money you save by not paying for your software to take some grammar classes.
Sorry, but I had to say it... - BananaGrabber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I have yet to install WGA. I always read what the updates are and make sure I don't download WGA. I remember checking the" do not ask again" box a long time ago but just a few days ago it asked me to download it again.
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9SOLUTION: Make the cost of the OS under $50 for an Upgrade for the top version and under $99 for a New Install of the top version.
- ki85squared, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9For some users, this might bring a new meaning to "We are the pirates who don't do anything."
- capitapf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@bowels
actually..........http://www.linuxgenuineadvantage.org/ - butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Regarding False Positives for WGA .
For a Client I purchased 6 Optiplex Ml210s from Dell with Windows XP Professional. We then ordered 6 copies of MS Office 2003 via the open assurance software scheme and we installed the licenced software on the Windows PCs. We also installed Firefox and MYOB and all was good. The next Tuesday rolled around and MS had rolled out WGA to the PCs via windows update and I got a phone call from the client that WGA said they had pirated software, they wanted their monies back because they think they have pirated software. I also got a couple more phone calls from other clients who were experiencing the same problems. Investigating these incidences showed that legitimate and licensed software was being regarded as pirated by WGA . WGA did create false positives. There is no argument that it worked well to locate pirated software since its unlikely people are going to shout from the rooftops that WGA did not spot their pirated copy but there is plenty to argue that WGA was not effective in its role. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10
That may work fine for XP, but WGA is standard equipment on Vista.
That's been cracked. You can't get auto updates, but the activation stuff has been removed. Until MS decides to update it again I guess.
I still haven't installed Vista, even though I can install this cracked version. Why do all you people that dislike MS rush out to get their latest stuff? Don't pirate Vista, let MS sweat it out a bit at least.
And if game devs continue to support XP, I really won't upgrade to Vista, ever. It's all about the DX10, the rest of Vista is absolutely useless to me because XP works well enough, and because I'm looking forward to using Linux (and perhaps even OS X) more in the future. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16And sir, you might be a red neck, if your neck is red. Genuine Advantage is a load of bull *****.
- sinbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hmmm, WGA is so effective that I have a pirated copy of XP on my PC that shows up as genuine. It's shown up as genuine for so long that I never bothered to install my legit copy.
- bowels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That may work fine for XP, but WGA is standard equipment on Vista.
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow! I knew WINE had made leaps and bounds, but I getting to the point where WGA runs on a Linux system? Now THAT's an acheivement!
- tkotam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When I run WGA on my ubuntu system, I get a "NOT SURE"... :-) That explains everything....
- justnick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6not exactly legit but I get your point. Also, believe me, they know about it.
- brodie7838, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am about at the point of just switching to Mac/Ubuntu only. Until then, Im sticking with my *cough, cough* "Not Sure" copy of XP.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Uninstall WGA:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921914
Set auto update settings to "Notify but don't download", then un-check WGA and any other cripple-ware Microsoft wants to install on your machine. - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"SOLUTION: Make the cost of the OS under $50 for an Upgrade for the top version and under $99 for a New Install of the top version."
Agree 100%. I would pay $50 or $100 to not have to deal with constantly dealing with anti-anti-piracy. People would of course still pirate it, but much fewer than if youre charging $399 or whatever. Hell, you could get a whole new half decent computer for $399, whose gonna spend that on software? Same goes with Photoshop, imo. I love photoshop, but I'm never gonna pay hundreds of dollars for it. - pring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you're a pirate and you know it clap you hands.
Clap Clap - InfiniteNothing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Dugg for alerting me to the fact that there's a "critical" update to watch out for.
- cyberwiz01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That video was incredible! Now I'm going to have that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll hack it to make it say: "Warning: You might be l33t."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6you are missing my point. those of us with the money DO buy it.. the only people stealing it are people WHO CAN'T AFFORD IT and a very small percentage of losers who will steal anything that they can get away with.
piracy (aka spread your ***** around everywhere) made microsoft the biggest software company in the world, why stop now? - Blisshead, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Is the the Jeff Foxworthy edition?
damn!!! to slow. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to agree with Ajajadude on this one. Get rid of the "M$," "any1," other AIM contractions & lingo, learn how to properly use "their," "they're," and "there," and use of the word "gay" as a negative adjective. They're childish.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7If Microsoft wanted to earn some MAJOR karma points, it would ditch activation on ALL of it products and stop treating its users like thieves and children.
- antigravity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think I can speak for everyone. ***** Microsoft WGA and the insane long code for activation via the indian call center. Pisses me off every time I have to call that ***** place.
- giroguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, that youtube vid was unexpected... yet awesome.... love how were told/trained to be pirates at such a young age, then they wonder how this thing called software pirating came from...... now we just need to get computers that look like treasure chests and were good to go.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WGA is still harassing people? Haha.
I cracked that ***** eons ago. - neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They don't actually -want- to catch you pirating Windows. That might lead you to investigate other solutions that don't involve paying for anything. They just want to keep the users feeling vaguely guilty. Keep the telescreen on you, mere conscience is not enough, you have to understand that any misdeed will be immediately found out and punished =p
- striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Open a folder, go to the help menu. Click "Is this copy of Windows Legal"... :P
- biggbrother, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Microsoft has a right to protect its intellectual property. Even though it is a pain in your ass, and costly (to you), doesn't it make you happy to know that Microsoft won't go bankrupt, and will have the incentive to bring out innovative OSes like Vista every five years?
- JAVandiver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This just in "Clippy" to be replaced by "Guybrush Threepwood." Licensing lawsuit between M$ and Luca$Art$ to begin... now!
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope you're being sarcastic.
- midbc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you will get more scurvy with vista than xp
- apollomurga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wouldn't like it if someone was stealing an operating system that i worked very hard on, just another way to see it
- 16777216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@capitapf
I actually downloaded this and looked at the files.
Files:
INSTALL - Install instructions
linux-genuine-advantage - A Perl script
Makefile - To "make/install" the program
README - The readme ( duh )
I don't know crap about Perl but it looks like it does indeed "phone home" and limit usage if not "genuinue".
Scary. - 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2clap clap

- Achilles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ah well, if Mr. Gates hadn't ejaculated the thought that he could save the world with "Preventing Maternal Mortality" to all of the poor women of Africa by becoming a philanthropic money spewing altruist, then maybe, and--theoretically--only maybe, he might have developed some great entity of anti-pirating force where no pirate could claim the booty of windoze as his/her own..........oh yeah
