- jenoosia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+60It's still far too early in the OS's life to cross off viruses. All it takes is time to learn the vulnerabilities of the OS- then boom! Virus attack.

"But seriously, no operating system needs an antivirus. Antivirus are for morons who open up email attachments from donkeyanal@analdonkey.com"
You seem not to that forgot that someone actually has to discover security holes before they can be patched. Often, that someone is not nice. This type of misguided belief in personal immunity, due to being to good to be in danger, is a large part of why we have huge botnets and most email is spam. There are countless millions of people just like you, going on and on about how they know how to stay safe. About how protection is for morons. All the while their computers are simultaneously engaging an i DOS attack and spamming.
The fact that you were dugg up on a technology site goes to show that we're all royally screwed for the foreseeable future. - nullmind, on 10/12/2007, -17/+63My Ubuntu 6.10 install doesn't need any antivirus....

- maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36I'm running RC2 now and even though i'm a relatively safe surfer, i don't use AV with vista anymore. I installed the trendmicro trial version for vista, however one of the file system filters made a thread "go balls to the wall" in the SYSTEM process after a program update so i ended up uninstalling it since it was killing one of my core's usage.
So far i'm finding windows defender is very capable and protected mode in IE7 is working wonders, even crack sites can't get baddies though, at least not yet i've found.
It might be ambitious to say that vista doesn't need AV, but this is definately the closest MS has gotten to substantiating this statement. Maybe Vista SP1 will be the cat's meow and AV will become a "safety net" for windows rather than a crutch. - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+35I haven't used a "virus program" [sic] in over 5 years. I just browse with Opera, and don't open email attachments from people I don't know. Wow...that sure is tough.
Clean system, no crashes, no adware or spyware, and no problems in over 5 years on Windows XP. - Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -13/+39do tell armbar.... without a virus program, HOW exactly do you know that your system is free of viruses? please... i would love to hear this explanation. hahahahahaha
point is: you dont. your system could be happily moving along, all the while, you are spamming the entire continent, completely unaware. the sheer NUMBER of viruses / malware out for the windows platform is just staggering... and the odds of you being free of all of them, is slim to none.
you forget... viruses do not only come in via email or internet. sometimes, they slip in on other packages, software, self prop worms, even hardware. to think you are immune, and are completely safe from them all, puts you one step above drooling baffoon. barely. - MajorD, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Mission Accomplished!
- steviepunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"he was comfortable with his own seven-year-old son using Windows Vista without antivirus software installed."
Misleading statement that, we all know that your average seven year old is more tech-savy and aware than your average 30+ year old home user (or office user for that matter). I'd bet he wouldn't be comfortable leaving his brother/wife/dad to use Windows Vista without any anti-virus software installed ;)
Dugg for the comedy value! - Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Same. Found it too troublesome and didn't use one either; got no troubles. People who know what they're doing don't find themselves in such trouble.
Because there is no patch for human stupidity. - rkenward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15sounds to me like titanic syndrome.
"mitnick himself couldn't sink this operating system"
bs. give hackers a few days and vista will be underwater like it smacked into an ice berg. - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Not when the shotgun causes your computer to boot completely 15 secs later and hog half your ram and who knows how much CPU, ***** NORTON.
- Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23rootkits anyone????
you people are hilarious. i always thought wii fanboys were the worst... i was
DEFINITELY wrong. windows fanboys are completely and totally oblivious.
lets make it real real simple here. answer me: HOW do you know your system doesnt have a virus?? without running a virus prog, how would you? there are pleeeeenty of viruses in the wild that attack at all forms of protection.
you people that refuse to use one, i thank you. you are the ones that help the other operating systems out in market share. hahahahaha - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14So what you mean is "no 3rd Party AV?" Maybe this is why AV companies are pissed. Microsoft will shut them out then what? Hope like hell Defender and other internal apps can keep viruses at bay. You know, like SP2 did....:o
- nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12yea right, Vista won't need an anti-virus as much as Wii won't need a TV.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Filed under "I'll believe it when I see it", and "I'm not holding my breath"
- gameboyhippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It's not the 7 year old I'd be worried about. I'd be worried about the executive using Vista and gaining a virus.
- Jumangi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12People are right in that if you don't use a ***** browser like IE 6, don't click on every single thing you see, and don't open every e-mail attachment you get then you can go it without a virus scanner. The problem is the average user doesn't pay attention to those things. Personally I still use one as it doesn't impact performance for me so why not just be a little extra safe.
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9please repost this article in its proper category... humor..
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10To be completely honest, I LOL'd about this.
I won't say that it's not possible...but I'll believe it when I see it. Once Vista has been out for a few months (or days, if you prefer), I'm sure there will be new exploits to get around the new security. It's always been that way, and due to the nature of Windows, I don't expect it to be any different any time soon. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10So he's not so much saying Vista doesn't need AV as he is issuing a challenge to hackers and virus authors. Ballsy!
- schappsj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11nothing like starting the morning off with good laugh.
- wstrucke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12> a good amount of people have used xp without anti-virus for years now.
I guess you don't check e-mail, do you?
I think the large majority of windows users don't have any virus scanning on incoming mail and/or they are using internet explorer or they just plain don't know any better than to run "pamela.porn.jpg.exe". EVERYONE should have a virus scanner. with the processor speeds we're seeing these days, you see a minimal impact on your system performance while it completely protects you (assuming you have a decent virus scanner). you may never get a virus if you know what you're doing... but I wouldn't let my mother use a computer without one. - cmost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Windows won't require anti-virus software??? Yeah right and winged monkeys are about to fly out of my ass at any moment too... While tech savvy people, and those with more than a modicum of common sense can get away without anti-virus software, I think we diggers know that the grand majority of users don't fall into this category. Vista will soon be a hackers paradise.
- aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8LOL!!
that may be true but its gojng be be somewhat like this
>windows is booting...
>would you liek to load device drivers y/n? *warning device dravers may have a virus in them*
would you like to load the gui y/n? *warning the gui may contain viruses* - rkoopmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm digging this so I can look back and laugh when the first onslaught of viruses start attacking vista. it's a ms product after all.
- j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"Windows Chief Says Vista Won't Need Antivirus"
BWAHAHAHA
Thank you for the good laugh his morning. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The CORE of Vista might not need an antivirus, but things like WLAN drivers are being hacked left and right. So the system WILL be susceptible if you have to install POS drivers to get your hardware to work.

[comment buried, show commenthide comment] + 1 digg if you're running as a standard user, as opposed to a user with power user, or administrative rights, then yes, you probably don't need to use anti virus.
NOT TRUE => FALSE STATEMENT
No one in our work enviroment is a administrator, they have virus issues come up just like everyone else. People, stop claiming to be experts on something this important when you are not. Not running Anti-Virus on your OS is simply irresponsible.. the only exception I could see is a system that is not used for surfing and any online activity really and is stand alone for one purpose. If it is on a network, it should have some soft of antivirus solution in place. I am not going to stay in this discussion and tell people "don't walk in traffic without looking" any more.. if people think they can because they have, go for it.. it just makes it more rough on others that are responsible when they see you get splattered and your computer then becomes part of the problem by becoming a bot.. - god4twenty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No wonder windows is insecure to begin with, they're using 7 year olds for beta testers.
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah and you don't need a shotgun to protect your home either, but its nice to have just in case.
- sarhentolobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yes, from what I've heard, it will be 100% bug free, 100% stable, 100% immune to all kinds of attackers, and be 100% efficient.
until you turn it on. - jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6famous last words...
- BigManOnCampus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Now that I have stopped laughing at this absurdity. I have realized that Microsoft could be right, with as many pop-up confirmations that Vista will reportedly make you click through, it is entirely possible that you won't need anti-virus software.
You will, however, need to worry about carpal tunnel on your index finger. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Boot Manager

Seriously, some people just don't have a clue. I remember a guy at my programming night class that boasted that he had never had a virus, ever, and doesn't use an AV program because only morons that don't know what they're doing get viruses. I gave him the links to a few scanners including Blacklight rootkit scanner and challenged him to run them on his system and show me screenshots of the results. He actually came back to me, sheepishly, and showed me that he'd found a zombie spammer on his system and another trojan. Props to him for being honest, anyway, but all this time he'd been blissfully unaware that his system was running this crap. "Been running smoothly, no problems for X years....."
Oh well. - EntropyFan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6xgeneration, can you give a little more detail please?
We run users in our company restricted, and have never had an issue with virus or mal-ware.
In a restricted environment, the user can set things to start with the machine, so how on earth could they become a bot? You can't insert browser helpers, or execute code outside of the restricted rights of the user...
When was the last time you saw a Windows bug attempt rights escalation?
I'm not saying it can't be done, but I have yet to see anyone give it a shot. They just go after the low hanging fruit - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I doubt it. There's more than enough going around. They don't need to get their hands dirty with that.
- xgeneration, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is a completely irresponsible statement from a Microsoft executive! I wish they could be held liable for such b****** claims that break the hard work true security professionals have done trying to educate users to protect themselves.
Everyone should be running AV, I am a computer security expert and know that there is no way to ensure my security without proper anti-virus solution in place, there are simply too many vectors out there and NO OS is safe from them all.
This is akin to saying "well, I've never got AIDS so I can have sex without a condom. Plenty of people do it" Yes, well lets look at Africa where there's a very limited use of condoms, what do we have there? The world's largest problem with AIDS. Don't be a lemming people, for the love of god.
Please, don't be stupid and think a firewall protects you from malware and virus's.. Firefox has holes, IE has holes, OS's have holes, people get email's that come through the firewall, as do other malware not running AV really is akin to having sex with strangers with no condoms.. you're playing with a loaded gun that will eventually go off. - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10if you're running as a standard user, as opposed to a user with power user, or administrative rights, then yes, you probably don't need to use anti virus.
but then, the same can be said of XP or 2000. -
