- unic0rn, on 07/02/2009, -4/+64I would say it's quite obvious Linux will run better? For ***** sake, it runs on a wristwatch....
- offrdbandit, on 07/02/2009, -4/+50"There are no built-in features for updating your Twitter status, which makes it a bit outdated."
This author is a freaking idiot and his opinion is officially *****. - mithrasinvictus, on 07/02/2009, -0/+40How can you compare netbook operating systems and not compare battery performance?
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -5/+42"Windows XP is a known quantity, so we won't dwell on any specifics here other than to say that the OS now seems excruciatingly dull and woefully out of touch with modern computing. There are no signs of being able to update your Twitter status from within the OS"
Stopped reading right there. Buried. - climatewarrior, on 07/02/2009, -1/+30I thought Windows 7 would install and boot faster than that. I think that with proper marketing Linux on netbooks could be a big hit.
- cheddaro, on 07/02/2009, -2/+27Your operating system doesn't have "twitter support" built in? Holy *****, what are you a ***** dinosaur??
That's definitely the first thing I look for when shopping for an OS. - mattus, on 07/02/2009, -0/+25What's with the Twitter obsession? Obviously the first thing I'm looking for in a speedy portable OS is built-in 'Twitter support' bogging it down.
- warp99, on 07/02/2009, -1/+24"That made Slax less flexible, and required that we bring an external DVD drive with us at all times. (We also could not find a USB version of the distro.)"
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/slax-609-flash-drive- ...
This took me all of 5 seconds to Google. Fail. - AdmiralAcbar, on 07/02/2009, -0/+17Agreed. A browser is sufficient to do this, why the hell would you need another built-in application?
- sneakyness, on 07/02/2009, -1/+17Wristwatch, Toaster, Phones, DVD Players, Game Consoles, A pretty overwhelming majority of every computer that has ever existed, Calculators, Cars, etc etc etc.
Linux is also hands down the most customizable, most easily optimized, most secure, and is translated into every single language ever, including pig latin and klingon, elvish too iirc.
Did I mention it's free? - smacksaw, on 07/02/2009, -1/+15Microsoft is making a mistake by not bridging Windows 7 and Windows Mobile. The article mentions Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but there's also Ubuntu MID: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Mobile
There's a gaping hole in Microsoft's efforts here, because the LPIA package for Ubuntu is getting better and better, meaning they will have a tailor-made kernel for these Atom-based systems. Speaking of which, the other distros they used are like Ubuntu Netbook Remix used to be. There's a lot of proprietary things, but UNR has caught up with 9.04. UNR is very good.
In fact, on our Aspire One netbooks, we got the XP version and then added UNR. For the most part, we all stay in UNR as it's faster, but it's handy to have XP on there to do specific tasks as there is no emulation possible on the Atom processors. - MacParrot, on 07/02/2009, -2/+16The best OS for your netbook is the one with the apps you use most. How fast it boots or how pretty it is (they went on and on about how old-fashioned WinXP is...why?) really doesn't matter in the long run. People aren't using netbooks as their primary machine but as a quick and dirty travel companion.
Is anyone surprised that an Intel Atom ISN'T as fast as a Core2Duo or Athlon? With smaller sizes comes certain compromises. It's up to the individual whether those compromises are worth it. - mattus, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13Huh? It looks like the desktop version because it IS the desktop version. There's no separate netbook version. Who's digging this up?
- TheSpiv, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11what is with the author's obsession with twitter? seriously.
- ilikedemoon, on 07/02/2009, -2/+13They both suck. Lets bring back AtariDOS.
- eschompthis, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8Nice review, but they seriously need to stfu about updating your ***** twitter status from the OS
- sneakyness, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8with proper marketing Linux on anything would be a big hit.
- MSP1, on 07/02/2009, -1/+9"Windows XP is a solid OS that works reliably, but our main problem with it is that we are just bored by the interface, and the idea of using an OS that thinks you still have a floppy disk drive installed is just wrong."
Sound like this article was written by a thirteen year old. - twiztidsinz, on 07/02/2009, -2/+10RC, not beta...
RC stands for 'Release Candidate' as in the 'Candidate for Release'. - dmcaudio, on 07/02/2009, -2/+9either way you have a very portable porn machine.
- backwardscompat, on 07/26/2009, -0/+7Almost... *too* portable.
*Shifty eyed dog* - cannonball, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7ON A NETBOOK!?!?!?!?! What kind of games are we talking about?
I use an SNES emulator on my Eeebuntu machine, and it works great. - dayal911, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Yeah, I mean that, and a few other comments, just make me laugh at this article. This is the most non-scientific study I've ever seen.
- Jude007, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7I haven't used it yet but apparently Android is coming to netbooks.
- cannonball, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5OS War..... BREAK!
- offrdbandit, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5We've come full circle.
Bloatware is a feature again. - mikael110, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you can have a "uncompressed mp3 file"
- sneakyness, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4I don't think people buy netbooks to play your precious Crysis.
The only games I could see myself playing on a netbook are flash games. - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5lol
- MattBD, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5Wish someone would hurry up and get Haiku into a 1.0 release, that'd be a great netbook OS. But of Windows and Linux, it's got to be Linux, hands down.
The problem is most vendors put on their own crappy distro (the Xandros on the Eee is dire). It's notable that Dell went with a pretty much stock install of Ubuntu, which is currently the most popular distro, and they're still offering it while other vendors seem to have stopped. They should have gone for the biggest and most popular distros such as Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, Mandriva and so on.
Incidentally, who else thinks Enlightenment 17 could be the ultimate UI for netbooks? It looks cool and it's lightweight and fast - if I worked for a company that wanted to put out a range of netbooks and had the job of creating a custom distro, I'd give serious thought to offering the E17 developers full-time jobs working on it so they could finally get it out and I could use it in my distro. - marx2k, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5AmigaDOS > AtariDOS
- warp99, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Ubuntu is already bridging with other mobile platforms such as Andriod:
http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/05/ca ...
The execution environment is already scheduled to be included for either 9.10 or 10.04. - thebigredcat, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Let's see them try their little test with eeepc that has a 4gb SSD. Now THAT would be interesting. . . to me at least.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -8/+12I don't know how fast is windows 7 compared to linux but I would take windows over linux any day because of its compatibility, even if it was a bit slower.
- thephosphorbox, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4I did a double-take when I read that line. I always assumed Twitter "apps" were for smartphones... why wouldn't you just use your browser to update your Twitter status on a desktop/laptop? Or Facebook? Or *gulp* MySpace?
- robrohan, on 07/02/2009, -5/+8The one where I don't have to make a telephone call to ask if it's ok to continue using the OS I paid for because I had the audacity to upgrade a part of the computer.
Also the one with a real shell. - Worldchrisis, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4Built in Twitter support is a necessity for an OS now? Does this person know that 50% of the people that have Twitter accounts don't tweet? And honestly, is it that hard to go to twitter.com? It's not a tough address to remember.
I have XP on my eeePC 1000HE, for the record. I'd consider putting 7 on it, but I'm not familiar with Linux distros and I don't have enough of a problem with XP to install it on my secondary laptop. - MicrosoftAccess, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Since people usually read the first comment here is the whole article on one page...
http://www.maximumpc.com/print/6830 - davidrools, on 07/02/2009, -3/+6Windows 7 beta and RC both run noticeably faster than XP, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Netbook Remix, and Ubuntu/HP Mi on my HP Mini 1000. But that's just in my experience and on the HP netbook w/ 1GB RAM and the 16GB SSD.
I think Windows 7 is optimized for SSDs, ya? So it makes sense that it outperforms the others on my system, where the test system in this article uses a 2.5" 5400rpm 160GB HDD. - sscilli, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4I really can't take this article serious when the measure of a modern OS is built in twitter support.
- fungie5, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3You're right. I was wondering what he meant by that.
Mp3 is a digital audio compression technology where raw audio data is digitally encoded and compressed to produce a smaller file with minimal loss of waveform data. An uncompressed audio file would technically be something like a .wav file.
I suspect that their confusion may be related to a fundamental misunderstanding of the difference between VBR mp3s and CBR mp3s....both are compressed. - dbz253, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3and because customization was one of the major selling points instead of ease of configuration.
that being said, i was promised a clear winner but do not see one on the page. maybe ubuntu since they talked about it so much? but that's not exactly a "clear" winner - dxxvi, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Linux just because of ext4 (no defrag needed) and of no anti-virus software needed.
- Kazbaeden, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3There are plenty of Twitter gadgets for vista/7, which is close enough to a built in feature.
- bobmugulie, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3"Boot time for Windows XP was 35 seconds, which is one of the longer boot times we experienced compared to the other operating systems."
"Ubuntu for Netbooks Remix also had a quick 30-second boot time, a hair slower than Moblin (at 25 seconds) and Slax (at 20 seconds) but still much faster than Windows."
um, it's only "a hair" faster than Windows XP. And no mention of Twitter in the Ubuntu review? - Kunal, on 07/02/2009, -3/+6Linux is quite unresponsive on my Vaio P. I installed Windows 7 and it's smoooth... works beautifully. I thought Linux would have been better but moblin and ubuntu both didn't work out.
- MacParrot, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Then you probably don't have it configured correctly. With all the right drivers, Linux should run fine on most hardware. How well would it work with Windows without the correct drivers?
- Mothlem, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3I'll chose the OPERATING SYSTEM that serve my needs not the OPERATING SYSTEM that i serve for his needs
- marx2k, on 07/02/2009, -4/+6Compatibility with what?
- stubear, on 07/02/2009, -2/+4Microsoft developed Origami while Linux was still trying to ape Windows and OS X. They decided, and I'm willing to bet that their market research backs this up (as opposed to your "hunches"), that being able to take advantage of current desktop apps trumped the UI. I'd also be willing to bet that the Ribbon interface they developed will play more of a role in developing UIs for a wider variety of devices and expand the flexibility of Windows in the process.
