*Launches uTorrent* - kromix, on 06/25/2009, -21/+77Beautiful, Highest paying customers ABUSED by Microsoft again.
Not only are the Ultimate upgrades not reflecting any discount, the "Discount period comming up where Home users get an upgrade for $49.99, and Professional users get $99.99 upgrades, there will be NO discount for Ultimate users. WHO DECIDED THIS, I'd like to email that department or that person directly, as an ultimate adopter and biggest spender I believe we have the right to be heard? It is pretty ridiculous. Not only that, but even _IF_ I wanted to pay $49.99 for Home Premium I still can't because the _ONLY_ Upgrade path we ultimate users have is Vista Ultimate -> 7 Ultimate. So you tie us into NO other choice but to pay 219.99 upgrade.
Do you think just because we are the big spenders you can tie us until paying another 219.99 for the upgrade?
VERY disappointing, will be looking at other options or just going to back to XP Pro. Ridiculous that you won't even offer a cheaper ultimate upgrade for the next few weeks like you do for Home Premium and Professional.
IF you want to screw Ultimate users so badly, ATLEAST give us the option to downgrade from Vista Ultimate -> 7 Home Premium so we can upgrade for $49.99.
I'll wait for a scene release.
Oh and can't forget, ***** THE RIAA! - ZenNemesis, on 06/25/2009, -1/+40*Wonders how much the OEMs will be*
- jordn, on 06/25/2009, -1/+24I love your original, quirky and well balanced comment regarding Microsoft, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
- Aurabolt, on 06/26/2009, -4/+25$319?! I could build a whole computer for that price that would last my mom 5 years! WTF Microsoft...
- Solkre, on 06/26/2009, -2/+21All they added is snow, and that ***** is free during the winter.
- Kazbaeden, on 06/25/2009, -12/+31You're not willing to pay for something you use daily and are happy with, but you'll steal it with no problem? What's wrong with you?
- JDex, on 06/26/2009, -2/+20I'm all for paying MS for their good work. 6 licenses of XPpro, I'd say I'm a damn good customer. Upgrading to 7 Professional at $199 per seat is not going to happen. I didn't pay that much per seat in the first place.
I'd gladly offer them $79 per seat to upgrade, maybe even $99 if I really felt it was a "great" upgrade. But as it stands, no. Not even upgrading one of them at that price. - Contradictions, on 06/26/2009, -5/+21The price is only good if you have a legitimate version of XP or Vista. So for most Digg users, this deal won't help them.
- MindStalker, on 06/26/2009, -1/+16At $199 its still much more cost effective for me to just buy a new computer. When they offer the public something close to what they offer OEM manufactures I'll be interested.
- christianw, on 06/26/2009, -4/+19thats also a FIRST for apple. before this 20 dollar leopard only upgrade its been 129 bucks a year.
the ONLY reason snow leopard is so cheap is because it doesnt really bring any new features to the table. its all under the hood.
basically, its leopard, just faster, multithreaded, and with no powerpc code bloat.
nice try troll - skelooth, on 06/26/2009, -5/+20I still don't get the anti-vista fanboyism. I've been running it for years with absolutely zero problems. My linux boxes require a lot more leg work to keep well maintenanced in comparison. One of these days people need to start forming their opinions on reality. I'll wait a while before upgrading though, that price tag for the ultimate upgrade is still pretty steep.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -1/+16Australian Prices:
Upgrade to Home Premium = $A199,
Upgrade to Professional = $A399,
Upgrade to Ultimate = $A429.
Retail, non upgrade version:
Home Premium = $A299,
Professional = $A449,
Ultimate = $A469.

Maybe not you specifically, but so many people say "If the prices were just reasonable then I would pay for it".
- mu0p, on 06/25/2009, -7/+21The preorder upgrade prices are amazingly low.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -3/+16Simple, you spent 3 grand on a mac I could custom build for 600 dollars with windows.
- darkstar107, on 06/25/2009, -0/+13Was planning on getting ultimate, but for $120 less, ill go with home premium. Not really any features I need that aren't in Home Premium. $50 and $100 should be the final prices, not only preorder prices.
- damack, on 06/26/2009, -2/+14Microsoft made a good operating system and the way to show them that we appreciate their efforts is to reward them with our money.
I think the bigger issue here is that people aren't buying new computers and probably won't spend on an operating system given the current climate.
I think if Microsoft did some sort of planned payments over a certain time period or something to that effect they would have more success.
On the other hand I just can't envision your average XP or Vista user going to a computer store and putting down 120 bucks for Windows 7.
Hopefully Microsoft do the sensible thing and don't expect people to pay too much for an operating system given the current climate and find ways to break in people easier and lessen the load on their wallets. - Kardde, on 06/26/2009, -3/+15Don't know why you're being buried. You're right. I have Vista Ultimate. Like hell I'm paying that much for an upgrade. I'll just wait until it's cracked and on the torrent sites, which should be a few hours after release, if not before.
- jmferris, on 06/26/2009, -0/+11I don't know what the hell you people are doing to your copies of Windows. I haven't had stability problems since I moved to Windows 2000, and that includes XP, Vista, and now the Windows 7 RC. The only time I *ever* reboot is for software installation. My machines are heavily used and are up for weeks at a time before I install updates or new software.
- PacoLugi, on 06/26/2009, -2/+10Ordered a copy from Amazon, $50, free release day delivery.
- Googled, on 06/26/2009, -6/+14Ridicilous, I fail to see how they can justify the pricing.
Although I exclusively use Linux; I think Windows is a great OS, but I certainly would not pay that much.
What happened to changing their business model? - dikky, on 06/26/2009, -5/+13just pre-ordered my copy
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -4/+12Linux updates cost $0, with no features removed. Initial installation cost is also $0. Just sayin' ... I don't why you people pay for your OS.
- Yazilliclick, on 06/26/2009, -1/+9They were submitted less than 20 minutes apart almost 24 hours ago. Learn how the ***** Digg works before you go sounding off next time.
- strictnein, on 06/26/2009, -3/+10If you're building a computer, why are you buying a retail copy of an OS? That doesn't seem smart.
- Myztry, on 06/26/2009, -0/+7With the cost of hard drives, you essentially get a free drive when you buy OEM. This allows you swap over drives and keep the origional intact in case something critical won't work.
- Azsen, on 06/26/2009, -12/+19Marketing people annoy the hell out of me. The prices for the full versions should be:
USD 30.00 - Home.
USD 50.00 - Professional.
USD 70.00 - Ultimate.
This would be compensation for:
1) All the useless versions of Windows (95, 98, ME, Vista) released to date.
2) All the times I've had to reboot Windows
3) Every time I've had to swear at my computer for failing and requiring a reboot.
Note I mentioned FULL versions, not 'Upgrade' versions because Upgrade versions are completely annoying for IT Professionals as you need the previous version's CD. Upgrade discs should be a thing of the past. Slipstreaming capability should be mandatory.
If they don't run with this pricing model, then they deserve to fail and Linux can destroy them! - TheKitchenSinkX, on 06/26/2009, -2/+9This is because they make the hardware so expensive. It's a tricky way to make people say what you just said.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+7What's the African prices ? This is a year's salary for us..
- bilbohicks, on 06/26/2009, -2/+9Yeah all those people who need their PC to do actual work that doesn't involve OO or Gimp can eff off. Losers!
- Kazbaeden, on 06/25/2009, -3/+10Pre-orders are $50 and $99. If that is too much for you then honestly you shouldn't be switching your OS anyway.
- doctorgrim, on 06/26/2009, -3/+9Looks like that's the way I'm gonna play this one. XP Pro FTW!
- IanRulez, on 06/26/2009, -3/+9Even the 7 betas were been amazing. I'll be running the RC until it no longer works. This isn't vista, trust me.
- datdamonfoo, on 06/26/2009, -1/+7@PervySage
You criticize Microsoft at every turn but still use their OS.
The hypocrisy is delightful. - surfacewound, on 06/26/2009, -1/+7XP virtualization and backing up files and (I assume) an image over the network make 7 Pro my future OS. I don't understand the point in Ultimate, according to Microsoft the only difference between Pro and Ultimate is Bitlocker and the ability to switch between 35 languages.
Bitlocker is a bit underwhelming, but why is it not in Pro? Vista Business got Bitlocker so I see no reason why they'd refuse to include it in 7 Pro. And since, unlike Vista Business, 7 Pro includes the multimedia features of Home Premium, I see no reason for Ultimate's existence, they should have added the two measly features to 7 Pro and called it a day.

In fact, oomfoofoo, you end nearly every comment with, "BN spam. Buried." Is it really all BN spam? Is everything even slightly bad about Microsoft just "spam"? And Astral, 95% of your comments are actually just one, copied and pasted, over and over again.
Oh, oh, I have a question! What the ***** is wrong with both of you bickering non-stop on the internet over OS's? - Chrysalii, on 06/26/2009, -0/+6coming from someone WHO HAS TO USE CAPS to prove a point?
- wolfing, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5Snow Leopard is more comparable to a free SP release. It's still OSX. Let's see if the upgrade to OS XI (if that's the name) whenever that happens is still $29
- sirbeta, on 06/26/2009, -2/+7Retard.
- ifallen, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5@dontreplytome
yes, we get pissed about an OS release, this is Digg, and your in the Tech section.
get used to it. - skelooth, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5I did. It's no different then using the latest Ubuntu at home, then using one 3 versions back at work. Who cares? I've used the public windows 7 beta and it's nice, but it doesn't make vista bad.
- omnithought, on 06/26/2009, -1/+6I've found that with OS's, it's just not worth the hassle of constantly trying to evade the verification processes with new service packs and everything.
I'll pay $50 to not deal with that headache, then I can torrent everything else in peace. - forcedfx, on 06/26/2009, -1/+6Yeah, so far, I'm very happy with XP. It does everything I need. I personally haven't seen anything that compels me to upgrade.
- Elranzer, on 06/26/2009, -4/+9I'm 100% certain that everyone who says "I always pirate Windows but I might just pay for Windows 7, for once" is going to just wind up pirating it. Everyone.
Even me. I'm not claiming innocence. I've pirated them all.
Though MAYBE, just maybe, once OEM prices are released (and after the first price drop), OEM versions of 7 might be worth the coin. - phpchris, on 06/26/2009, -2/+7Let me guess, friend of AstralKnight?..
- brim4brim, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5that's what they said about XP
- DankJemo, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5This is simple, because Apple is just releasing a service pack, Microsoft is releasing a whole new OS. It doesn't look or act anything like Vista, or any other MS OS for that matter, it is still way too much money, especially after that vista thing.
Apple releases service packs and calls them New Operating systems. They are all still within the OS:X family, it isn't a new OS at all, just an upgrade with a few new features (really cool new futures.) I just wish Apple would stop calling it a New OS, and call it an upgrade. - sirbeta, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5No, you're certainly not retarded for using a free operating system. You are, however, retarded for making that post I replied to.
- wolfing, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5First time I pay for a Windows OS on its own (usually they just come with the computer), but gladly so if it's only $40, specially after experiencing it by myself with the Windows 7 RC. I skipped Vista, but will gladly switch to 7 from XP (good ol' XP, you served me well!).
