- Zippo, on 07/08/2009, -10/+48Microsoft really needs to ditch the ***** segregated versions of Windows scheme. One disc, one complete version.
- MAGZine, on 07/08/2009, -8/+42It's not too bad.
Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional are really the only editions at large. Ultimate has a lot of ***** that you don't need, Starter is for emerging markets, and Home Basic is for netbooks. Enterprise is for enterprises.
Yeah, 1 verison would be nice, but this isn't _TOO_ bad. - theberlindoctor, on 07/08/2009, -2/+29Good article. I'd love to see someone try doing the upgrade chain from 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 just to see if it works.
- Konrad9, on 07/09/2009, -1/+22And what 128 bit processor would you be using?
- EvanGH, on 07/08/2009, -3/+20c-c-c-c-combo (breaker?)!
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -2/+16Good article. I had no idea I could install both discs to get 96 bit processing.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -3/+16yes
- Onethirtytwo, on 07/09/2009, -1/+13Is your computer from 1995?
- splinter09, on 07/07/2009, -7/+18Great post dude, it sure answered some of the question I had about updating to windows 7
- sh1tman, on 07/09/2009, -0/+10Reply button FTW.
- cigawoot, on 07/09/2009, -2/+12For most users Home Premium is where its at, for me Profession will be a better option (I like being able to RDP into my home computer).
Ultimate is a joke. - Dawsy380, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9Yes, as long as your processor supports 64 bit processing.
- BlackSheep882, on 07/09/2009, -3/+12I don't hate 7 but i do love Vista
Have used it for 2 years not one problem - krisrm, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9I'll take option 3, and then tell you to screw off, thanks. Oh, and, for the record, if OSX had half the user count that Windows does, you'd probably see Apple a bit more eager to fix months-old vulnerabilities rather than tell users to "turn the feature off." You're also privy to nearly as many security updates; Apple just prefers to lump them all in one massive upgrade, rather than giving users the choice to install separate components.
- twiztidsinz, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9Can you even upgrade from 98 to 2000?
Since 2000, XP, Vista and 7 are all NT based where as 95 and 98/SE are not.
Apparently, yes.. you can. With the Systems Management Server.
Though I would absolutely hate to see the system with 95 upgraded to 98 upgraded to 2000 upgraded to XP upgraded to Vista upgraded to Windows 7. - inactive, on 07/09/2009, -2/+11Dude, the average new comp comes with 250-320 GB hds. 16G shouldn't be a big deal anymore.
- wukillabee, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7home premium
- CoolSilver, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7Windows 7 will have all editions on the same disk. Windows Anytime Upgrade is much like a feature unlock more than an upgrade in 7.
- justinbkerr, on 07/09/2009, -2/+9I think Ed Bott said it best. Microsoft has never meet anyone with this opinion who didn't want Ultimate for the price of Starter.
- twiztidsinz, on 07/09/2009, -2/+9Well.. since there is (to the best of my knowledge) no 128bit version of the software, the answer would be "no".
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+7What are you doing, curing cancer? Designing a new space shuttle?
- Konrad9, on 07/09/2009, -3/+9I would hazard a guess to say it is one of the reasons they are as successful as they are.
You don't see a Business version of the Mac OS and you don't see it being used at a particularly large number of businesses.
As MAGZine said, you see Home Basic on netbooks. You don't really want a version designed for a powerhouse PC being run on an Atom CPU, it would run unbearably slowly.
I would like to see one version for the 'home' but I doubt it would be as cheap as the Home version they will be selling. - schoate09, on 07/09/2009, -0/+6When it comes out, I will give it a shot in a VM. 95 may be tricky on real hardware, as it has issues with recent processors. Drivers, obviously, are nonexistent (but not required for upgrades).
- roxgod666, on 07/09/2009, -1/+7How the hell is that even possible? Windows 7 is better than Vista in everything.
- shamittomar, on 07/09/2009, -0/+6Meh, You can change the size of buttons. Go to Taskbar > Properties.
- kingnova, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5I know! How am I supposed to install this on my PS2/80 with only a 330mb hard drive?!?!?
- HamstaMan, on 07/09/2009, -2/+7But why such a huge amount. No seriously I just wanna know what they spent all that space on. If it is for a valid reason then so be it.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+6i don't think i will be switching to win 7 until the first sp. it continuously crash my steam games, and i tried for days to rectify it but couldn't. also it was not compatible with some old software and its just too annoying. on the upside, there isn't enough incentive to switch. it is basically only a new interface, it wasn't faster than xp, more efficient, or better in anyway. i can't see any reason to switch now other than for the fact that its cool to have something new that looks great.
a lot of people bash windows but xp is the most stable os there is for home use. it works perfect with all software and hardware. my system crash maybe 5 times a year at most. linux doesn't even come close in any of these fields. linux as an os itself may not crash but the software crash all the time. as for security holes, who cares if you are just using it at home? i haven't been infected by a virus in 5 years because my free antivirus catches it. and who the hell is gonna hack my computer? - wukillabee, on 07/09/2009, -3/+8nah i prefer diff versions, no need to have unnecessary crap i wont use but maybe large corporations will
- sharkydog, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5***** that, ***** you, and ***** everyone who looks like you.
- Gizza, on 07/09/2009, -1/+6If they only had one version we would all be paying the Ultimate price. This scheme allows us to get less features but pay less, while at the same time allowing MS to make more money of customers who want more.
- emomakesmecry, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5Said it before in a previous comment. I actually like Vista. It works great for me and I plan on sticking with it for the foreseeable future. Most of the complaints I've encountered with Vista are caused by 1) Someone not knowing how to use a computer or 2) Not having a machine that can run the OS in the first place.
- Yarkz, on 07/09/2009, -1/+5I hate the I am a two year old I need huge ***** buttons at the bottom of my screen in order to launch an application *****.
- JasonCox, on 07/09/2009, -5/+9I don't know about anyone else, but I'll be buying the Home Premium Family Pack and then upgrading one of those licenses to Professional for my work machine. I loved Vista, but I've learned my lesson about buying Ultimate.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -2/+6I dunno. Advanced porn rendering?
- 2matrix, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4I have been using Ubuntu since Vista came out, I never really could bond with Vista. When Windows 7 RC came out, I had problems with it as well and figured I stay with Ubuntu Linux - the problems as I discovered were related to the Nvidia drivers which caused the system to slow down amongst other things. Last week I installed Windows 7 RC1 once again using the new Nvidia drivers and I have to admit, there is probably no going back to Ubuntu at this point - Windows 7 is a fantastic OS, and yes while is shares many traits with Vista, the OS on a whole feels faster, uses less resources and the new start bar and aero features make the UI very convenient. This isn't Vista, the kernal feels solid, and smooth - faster than Linux distros which says alot as I am a big Linux fan. I also think the tweaked themes look beautiful and Aero IMHO is the one to beat.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3That would be awesome.
- gnimsh, on 07/09/2009, -4/+7They don't come with features you don't miss until you need them to fix some problem and then have to delve into the registry and muck about and HOPE that it gets fixed. That's why.
- habbofresh, on 07/09/2009, -1/+4i just need to know the cheapest version that supports media center
- javaroast, on 07/09/2009, -1/+4To Apple the product activation and Mac Genuine Advantage is purchasing Apple's hardware. Say what you want, but that seems to be a hoop to jump through to me.
- kahoona1, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3"I Am Running a 32 Bit Edition of Windows Vista. Can I Upgrade to the 64 Bit Version of Windows 7?
Your only option in this scenario will be to perform a clean install. Upgrading a 32 bit edition to 64 bit or downgrading a 64 bit install to 32 bit using the in-place approach is not supported."
Nope, still doesn't say XP...excuse me if I want to get something clarified if it is going to cost me 200 dollars to buy. - teh_techie, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3you should have tested out the release candidate by now, then you wouldn't have to hope, you'd know.
- jakem1, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Well done fatas. The RC is still beta software in that it's not the final release and still needs testing. RC doesn't mean trial version and you probably shouldn't have installed it if you don't understand that.
- javaroast, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2You would have hazarded incorrectly with your guess. Your theory doesn't explain who Microsoft OS's had a majority share of the market BEFORE they had a business version of their OS.
- j0rd0n420, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2You can change it to be like Vista.
- ariez84, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Does anyone know if I can upgrade Vista Ultimate to Home Prem 7? I heard you cant "downgrade your upgrade" meaning you cant go from a higher version of Vista to a lower version of Windows 7.
- XFi6, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Or wait for a leak of RTM before it hits store shelves like what happened with Vista.
- krisrm, on 07/09/2009, -0/+27 >= Vista
QED - antdude, on 07/09/2009, -0/+21 print page (will prompt a print dialog): http://www.maximumpc.com/print/6905
- samcobra13, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2So if you're running the RC, can you still purchase and install the upgrade version of it as a clean install or will you have to get the more expensive version?
Cause I'm dying to preorder but don't want to waste the money if I can't even use the disc I buy. -
