- adambeta, on 10/12/2007, -15/+176Does anyone actually pay for WinZip or WinRAR? I've been using open source 7-zip for years, without a problem.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -15/+58is 7-zip as good? I've never used it. Winrar is ***** me off,
- JohnM5, on 10/12/2007, -20/+56I think it is. I love 7-zip.
- wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -11/+30http://www.extractnow.com/ also works nice. handles all of the formats, and free of course.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -28/+10I think that's why they made it free.
The only program I paid for (that didn't 'require' payment) was TextPad, since I use it extensively for 6 years.
But WinRar, I use it maybe every once in a few months, so.. - juicecowboy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+15How does it compare with 7-zip? I've used that for most tasks just fine. Never used WinRAR.
- decay, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21WinRAR is alittle better, but ive been using it free already..., Maybe some of the features are locked in the everlasting trial.
I would give you a source but I forgot where I read, maybe Tomz? - slonkak, on 10/12/2007, -21/+337zip has better compression. The 7z compression is far superior to RAR. Oh, and did anyone mention it's free, always ;)
- walterd93, on 10/12/2007, -46/+25no, i just downloaded from BT...like everyone does.
- SonnyW, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25For what tasks does 7zip perform better than winrar? I don't compress files often, but everytime I do need to winrar is both faster and more compact.
- aptget, on 10/12/2007, -15/+25sudo apt-get install unrar
Already free :) - kuratkull, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31hah, translated WinRAR to my language. got a free registration :)
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -23/+5if stuffit was free, i would report this as lame. (but it's not) so ***** stuffit and their 30 day trials WinRAR rules.
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19I've always used winrar with the little trial notice.. Never cared enough to crack/buy it.. It's not that annoying when you get used to the message :P
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9I use WinRAR to create rar files. If 7-Zip had the capability, I'd switch in an instant. I know 7z files have better compression, however. rar is just more adopted nowadays, its surpassing zip, and at some point I'm sure 7z will surpass rar in the future.
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -17/+9I've been using my WinRar trial forever..there isn't much difference in it. Let's face it, most things are released in .RAR/.TAR right now rather than in .7z
If they switch, i'd switch. - Justathought, on 10/12/2007, -14/+15The real advantage of 7zip is that it is open source. That means that if you archive your whole hard drive in 7z format, you have very good chances that you will be able to open them many years into the future, even once we have all switched to Linux. ;) .rar files are closed source so if their maintainers decide to can the project and stop supporting future operating systems all your .rar files are worthless.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I don't find archive sizes too problematic these days, especially not when they're relatively speaking as small as RAR vs 7-zip. So then I rather go for features, and then WinRAR excels compared to both 7-zip and that horrid WinZip. It's also quite fascinating that WinRAR doesn't cost more than WinZip. :-p
- taotaobabe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Guys, the reason why WinRar is so popular is that it's the de facto standard for distributing 0day/warez (aka pirated) softwares, games, etc. lol
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_%28warez%29 for details.;) - hammydude, on 10/12/2007, -44/+22*Cough* *Cough* Winzip 10 registration name: "Digg Users" (no quotes) *Cough*
*Cough* *Cough* Unlock Code: N98GA-C68ND-CUT25-NZHR8-MY717 *Cough* - shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22"Does anyone actually pay for WinZip or WinRAR? I've been using open source 7-zip for years, without a problem."
Does anyone actually pay for WinZip or WinRAR? I've been using WinRar Trial for years, without a problem. - Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Trial as well. just a window "Shareware - plx unlock kekethx" which usually pops up after extracting folders. Nothing too annoying though as I automatically close it with the rest of the extraction folder.
very nice - I'll get it this sunday for sure. I love winRAR and I think it's a lovely gesture - smurf1337, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I've also been using the trial version. I get a window that says to update, but it works fine...
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10IZArc - don't look back.
winrar was great, used it for many years and could never understand why people liked winzip - it couldn't do anything more than zip and yet everyone seems to have it installed. rar is a great format no matter what program uses it, izarc is totally free and includes all formats. - djjoemex, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I agree with you :) I also think 7zip is uses a more efficient algorithm to compress files. Even 7-zip format is smaller than rar.gz, zip or rar, I still prefer using 7zip with zip files because It's like a standard. Just like mp3 is for audio, I think zip is for compress files.
I am sure winrar is very dissapointed seeing that many users and companies are switching to 7zip, too bad for them because winrar is not free and many users are downloading winrar with torrents wich is totally illegal. I have been using 7zip for 4 years and I don't think I'll switch to winrar for now. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22On day 469 of my 30 day trial......free lol...
- Hiker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Actually, RAR seems to compresses better on larger files than 7zip. 7zip compression is better when you have a lot of small files in the archive from what I 've seen. Also, RAR has better support for opening ISOs. Another thing, and this is one of the reasons I dumped 7zip and went back to WinRAR for my RAR needs, when I open an archive from the web (instead of using Save As, use Open), I was getting a lot of "File does not exists"s with 7zip. And also, I like being able to open an archive, select what files I want and dragging them to the location I want. With 7zip, I couldn't seem to do that; I had to select the files and use EXTRACT. I prefer WinRAR letting me select the files and just drag them out of the interface to my chosen location.
- 5abi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2i pirated winrar years ago for the corporate edition now i download the newest pirate version all the time, only if u did this two years ago
- kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -6/+77zip is teh suxor. I tried rolling it out to about ten people as part of a clean winxp build about a year ago; anything remotely complex and it would crash all the time. No way is it anywhere near the quality and features of WinRar or even Winzip, which itself lags way behind WinRar.
All the "power archivers" (I mean people in corporate support making archives of huge oracle and mssql dbs, not warez people) use WinRar and have done for years. - zelph, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Since it wasn't listed here yet, 7-zip is located at http://www.7-zip.org/
- soulshinejam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I mean, 3.51? I'm taking advantage of multithreaded decompression with WinRAR 3.60 Beta 8.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -15/+7Hell of a deal.
And STFU about 7-zip. It's a POS that doesn't even compare to WinRAR. - pika2000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Yeah, I've been using 7-Zip too. However, good software for free is still great.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've paid for WinRAR, it's well worth the money IMHO.
I also use it to distribute/install the software I write.
N. - surfit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I own a copy of WinRAR too, well worth the cash. The company I used to work for also bought several copies for all the developers. I buy software when I think it is worth the cash, such as PowerDVD or Textpad.
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47z = Slightly better compression but only sometimes. HUGE resource hog (200mb of ram and tons of CPU).
WinRAR = Great compression pretty close to 7z even beating it sometimes, takes hardly any resources.
I vote WinRAR. - bobbknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well it's Sunday and all I get is a link to where I can buy WinRar.
What a bait and switch.
7-zip forever - kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bobbknight, just to to https://www.win-rar.com/bestoverallutility/ .. it works fine ... when you get your key email, change the link they send you to the https version as well.
- Chadarius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I totally agree. Whopadeedooo! Winrar? There must be a lot of stupid people out there if they are paying money for Winrar or any compression program with all the great free versions like 7-zip out there. I recommend 7-zip for all my unfortunate Windows using friends.
This story is totally lame. Bury it! - infobeat234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All morning i was checking back and back again to get this then i had to go to work, 9 hours later at 11 pm my time there site sais its down untill 0:00, just great
But thanks to the cybernetnews trick i got my key, but i cant get the sucker to run sais i can only run binary regestry keys., Ill work it out later..

- Locker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9I love winrar, it's so simple to use :P
Now thanks god it's going to be free, time to say BYE BYE to the window that pops-up everytime you open a file- vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42If you right click a rar and extract it, you get no nag screen from WinRAR. Been using it that way for years.
- geekThing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Note that it is not going free forever, just for one day on july 30th.
- SystemHasFailed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Also note that it's a non-upgradable license. So when the new version of WinRAR comes out (soon) you'll have to pay for a full license.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -38/+7WinRAR costs money?
What the hell did they let me download then?- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25You downloaded Winrar you just get that nag screen everytime you use it.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -44/+5That's such a n0ob comment.
- Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -18/+28^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
Thats such a noob comment... well i guess this is too :-s - frickindeal, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1And we forgot that you were never new at anything.
- matt0817, on 10/12/2007, -12/+27i just use the never ending win-zip free trial
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I get a little sick of the 5-minute long nag screen that comes up every time you start it.
- UCFmethod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23You should see some of the machines in my office, they count for what seems like hours the number of days you have used winzip.. Funny actually.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -35/+2you cant even spell n00b you ***** nub.
- fetusface, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24Who pays for winrar?
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+69Probably the same people who pay for mIRC. If you like a piece of software and find it useful you might as well contribute to the cause even though they don't force you to unlike other programs.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24fetusface: Who pays for anything?
- robotz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Someone that isn't a complete software whore?
- misterjangles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I try to always buy software that I use a lot and has a reasonable price. It's annoying to hear people mention that they never ever pay for software, as if it were totally a waste of money.
I do think some things are priced so high that there's no way the common person can afford them. For those I try to find a free alternative or, ehem, find some other way to use the software. he he. But I like to try to support independent companies. - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -25/+5> For those I try to find a free alternative or, ehem, find some other way to use the software. he he. But I like to try to support independent companies.
What the hell are non-independent software companies then? What the ***** are you talking about? Do you even know yourself what you are saying? Do you ever give pause before writing a message and say to yourself "Man this is some illegible ***** I'm writing" and then post it anyway? Or are you just a blithering retard? Well you go ahead and keep "liking to try". Clownass - SystemHasFailed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I did.. and I paid for mIRC too. I want to support software that works and (for my needs anyway) works well. Besides, WinRAR registration isn't that expensive and it's a solid product.
- CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@Matt2k
What the hell? You have too many questions, and you act like a moron. His message was perfectly legible. Try learning the difference between "legible" and "comprehensible" before spouting off. No, wait, nevermind, just don't speak at all, because you're pretty much just a flaming idiot. Your "blithering retard" bit is much more apt for yourself rather than misterjangles.
Even with all of that, it's perfectly understandable what he means by an independent company. He means a company independent of major corporations. Smaller groups of programmers that are trying to earn an honest couple of dollars, and all that good stuff.
Oh, and by the way, what, precisely, is a "clownass"? I've never heard that insult before, and I'd love to hear how you came upon such a remarkably idiotic new word.
- hemo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I use WinRAR for .rar-files.
For encryption, password protection and when I want to part an archive to fit somewhere (like x times 10 MB files). - johnie1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8this makes me happy
WinRAR doth ROCK (: - macbwizard, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Since when did it actually cost something?
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Free stuff is free stuff. I will probably download it just to have it, even though I am happy with 7-zip and Iceows.
- chess007, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4No reason to use winrar or winzip. ZipGenious is free, always has been. Both the suite version and the standard version are free.
"ZipGenius.it - Free zip utility for Windows that handles zip, rar, cab, 7-zip archives and CD-ROM ISO9660 image files" It supports 7-zip and other formats too. You can also cut big files into smaller pieces.
"ZipGenius now can precompress executable files going to be added to a ZIP archive through the UPX compressor."

Its one of the best pieces of free software i've found online. :)- sxreader, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6... with the stupidest name. ZipGenious? Is it for kids or what?
- frickindeal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apparently it's for people that can spell "genius".
Kidding, of course. :)
- burgerboy06, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3DAMNIT, i JUST PAID....jk
- warcry, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6izarc is pretty good too.
http://www.izarc.org/download2.html- sxreader, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0hmm ok that it much better.
- shafe9, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4yeah, IZArc is the closest thing to winrar I can find, but I'll probably use this free winrar now instead of IZArc, winrar has better context options and seems to work faster. Although IZArc is pretty awesome for a free product. Very stable and it does have adequate right click options.
- theatgrex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53Can someone please repost this on Sunday?
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41But the dupe nazis will attack!
- Bluenoise, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8lol i agree
- whappo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just go to their website on sunday...
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -16/+16I prefer 7-zip thank you very much...
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9You can prefer it without looking down on another persons choice, thanks.
- fatsobob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16This is awesome, I am making a note of this so I can get my hands on a free LEGIT copy of WinRar
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -18/+10i love winrar with the crack, been using it for years
- sxreader, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18thank you. I kind of felt lonely.
- tinkafoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Since everyone's hyping it, does 7-zip finally let you drag and drop, or have I been stuck in the dark ages?
- jfurtner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yes, the newer versions (starting at 4.23) support drag-and-drop.
- plasmatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just highlight what I need in windows explorer, right click and say add to archive and I have my compressed file. I don't use the form that it provides to extract and compress files I just do it all in windows explorer.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Wait WinRar wasn't free all this time?
- pantuky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I just rubberband what I want to compress and right click, regardless of which compression I am using. I favor 7-Zip because:
1. It's 64 bit
2. Produces the smallest compressed files
3. Highly multithreaded
4. Free and legal.
I'm going to give Winrar another look.- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"Highly Multithreaded"
Too bad it still runs slower than a ***** snail on the highest end highware. - robbyt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4opensource software evolves
- yottabite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5WinRAR is 64bit too...

- Engival, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A little more information beyond "yes":
http://www.rarlab.com/wgmbh.htm
- ravenofwinter, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4Why bother with buying compression software? Isn't buying a larger drive a better investment?
Ok, so there are some savings with transmissions and all, but I wonder how much longer software like the various Zip and RAR and ACE programs will be around as drives keep getting larger and pipes fatter.
Of course, I do know on the production end of things, there will be a use for such programs, if for no other reason than to make sure that patches and upgrades only involve one file, but even then, will software oneday reach the point where it won't be possible to find a program without its own built-in upgrade tools? (Or maybe it'll all be through the OS like in Debian).
Ah well, I am going to get it.- SkaCahToa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I guess downloading massive files... compression does help. That is like saying that harddrives will get soo good that people can use raw AVI instead of using XviD or another MPEG 4 codec.
- gamer82987, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I've been using winrar for years now. although i do hate the nag screen. and i always thought that winrar was one of those software that deserved to be payed for.
recently i have discovered free alternatives like tugzip and 7zip. tugzip can handle almost all compression types but needs external apps to compress rar and ace files, and it has great icons and a really decent shell integration, even though that does nothing to the utility of the program, it makes other people feel better when i install it to their systems.
7zip is also really good, however it has a pretty bland shell integration, and i can't mass compress in 7zip like i can on winrar, i.e mass compress individual files into individual records, not compress all files into one record and split up in chunks. if someone could tell me how to do it also in 7zip, it would be greatly welcomed
i haven't installed winrar in any of my new computers or computers that i have recently re-imaged, and I'm still using 3.2... - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I use the WinRAR free trial. It expired, but instead of ceasing to work it just tells me it's expired with a small pop-up window which I quickly close and go on extracting.
- Havs, on 10/12/2007, -9/+47-zip works just as good for 99% of content out there. I've only run into one type of instance in which 7-zip won't work. The Daily Show episodes on usenet will only extract with winrar for some odd reason. They won't even extract via command line. If it weren't for that single reason I would've only used 7-zip.
- AlexMarar, on 10/12/2007, -46/+3No one uses WinRAR, i use 7-Zip.
- jadedknight, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30You are not everyone. Douche.
- xst4t1kx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I use WinRAR. You are not everyone. Douche.
- warkro, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Dude, Alzip. works just as well as 7-Zip from my experience. www.altools.net
- Sektor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Opening passworded .rar files with 7-zip takes longer than winrar since it requests the password multiple times. I was thinking about fixing it in 7-zip and recompiling but downloading winrar for free will be easier.
- iamjaredc, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0...but OSX already compressed/decompresses archives. it's built in. so why download....
ohhh..... right.
come on. just a little humour. - tnerb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1i like IZarc, works really good, and its free
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1... and so is TUGZip, another archiver some like
- robwolf100, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4Weak, I just Torrent this app.
- Kriz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26They're giving it away for free, and you still pirate it?
Such intelligent life to be found on the internet. - robwolf100, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1I wont take any criticism for a user that has not submitted a single story. If you want to help you should contribute to digg and not just give comments about others.
- doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's not really like it's free - it's just another extended trial. Wait till winrar 11 and you won't be able to use it for half the files. Not to mention that torrented versions often have more capabilities (and you don't have to wait until Sunday).
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You won't take it? Oh my! Such strong words. I wonder how you're planning to deal with him though, seeing as how this is the Internet. I hope you don't try to crawl through the series of tubes, since you'd probably get tangled when someone sends me an internet.
- xst4t1kx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I wont take any criticism for a user that has not submitted a single story."
You'll take it and you'll like it and maybe you'll even ask for seconds. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Okay, well I've submitted a couple stories and I agree with Kriz. So take it and shut up. Have a nice day.
- Kriz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26They're giving it away for free, and you still pirate it?
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Winrar is an amazing program. So well done from so many angles. It is one of the FIRST programs I download on a new installation. After that, I'll get Winamp. Congrats to the Winrar team!
- norz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You'd better use foobar2000 for your audio files, it's way more powerful than winamp.
Although it requires some time to set up for your needs properly.
Also: last version 0.9.x can't use configuration files of previous 0.8.3, requiring to rewrite or copy/paste everything...

- yottabite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems you need to register for the newsletter...
- motivr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37zip is good. BUT 7zip still has problem with extracting some .rar files. That's why I don''t use 7zip.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's cool that everyone is spouting off how great the alternatives are, but when you're on a new box and need to install an archive compression program, who can remember the names of anything besides winzip and winrar? When you do a search for compression software, you get nothing but useless crap extortion^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hshareware.
WinRAR's been my friend for almost 10 years now. Thank god, I can finally own a full version of it ;)- tommis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you've been using it for 10 years, would it not have been fair to pay the ONE TIME lifetime registration fee for WinRar to support the programmers? You obviously find the tool usefull, so I just don't get it.
I've paid for it as well, because I think it "just works" better than the other tools in it's category.

- Frosty12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you downloaded the trial version
- rk_cr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Winrar is the *****. I am so happy I won't have to see that annoying "register now" screen.
- fatas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Pity 7-zip has the most awful icons they look similar to Folders.
- Owned1Up, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1IZArc is free, and compresses every file type known to man.
- digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Wow now i dont have to bootleg winrar anymore! after all these years
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I've been using mainly tar.gz archives for quite a while, and that includes on Windows.

Works like a charm, especially in batch files. As far as downloaded zip and rar archives I've been using WinRAR, but only with the right-click | Extract Here function which gives me no pop up. - anomalya, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1free winrar

I've never really liked its interface or found it to have anything that other archiving programs don't. Not to bash winrar people, I'm just wondering if there's something I'm missing.
- Johnnie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I've never had a need for RARing files so I've always used the free unrar utility that they offer for free. Just throw it into your system32 and you can call the executable within any directory. Its MS prompt based but no biggie if you don't mind command line stuff.
- colinm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Associate rar files with unrar x and you just have to double-click a file to extract it:
"C:/windows/system32/UnRAR.exe" x "%1"
(replace forward-slashes with back-slashes, digg doesn't support back-slashes)

- SupaFupa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Well, you've all done a great job modding down all the comments of people saying that they've never paid for software that asks very nicely for you to support the developers, but no one seems to want to answer the underlying question: for the average user that is only using winrar to extract that crooked washed out telecine of clerks 2, what added features are afforded a paying customer?
- CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They've modded all of them down? Funny, the first post says something to the extent of never having paid for it, and last I checked, it had 51 diggs. The people that have been modded down are the people who have said the exact same thing, over and over again. Something like that is only funny once or twice, and if everyone keeps asking it, then it's worthless and spammy.
Oh, and there really are no added features, as far as I'm concerned. Nothing that's worth it, in any case. - Johnnie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3are you the one that modded down? I was stating a fact that rarlab has offered a free unrar utility for as long as i can remember, not some open source alternative or warez or anything... i thought that was kind of informative...
- CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@Johnnie
I certainly didn't mod you down. Normally I only go after the first few posts. Not quite sure why people are modding you down... I just modded you up.
