Wil Wheaton: Itunes 7 ate my purchased music
wilwheaton.typepad.com — Wil Wheaton having a frustrating time with Itunes 7
- 924 diggs
- digg it
- zcondren, on 10/12/2007, -96/+24Itunes is terrible I can't wiat until it eats everyones video as well. Itunes is the biggest hunk of crud on the PC the software is so freaking slow. Give me urge and Zune any day.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -21/+26iTunes 7 is noticeably faster than iTunes 6.x.x in just about every respect.
- zybch, on 10/12/2007, -40/+23zcondren is pretty close to the mark.
iTunes might run fine on macs, but its a trainwreck under windows.
One of the reasons I'll never be buying an iPod is for that very reason, I totaly refuse to have my settings and stuff taken over by apple's badly ported app just so I can easily transfer music to an MP3 player.
What the hell is wrong with drag'n'drop, or do the ***** who write stuff like itunes not think that letting you do that is 'different' enough? - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -17/+25When I built a new PC I wrote down all the programs I used and ranked them with a plan to replace or delete the pain-in-the-ass ones. My family ranked #1 worst program was iTunes. Since we do buy music (just not DRM music) I replaced iTunes with a tiny footprint program called anapod. I paid a bit of $ for it but glad I did. This bad boy is easy to use and will moved songs on an iPod faster than iTunes EVER will.
- cheztir, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11zybch, did you expect a good version of iTunes on Windows? It's the same ideology as Microsoft can use for Word on Mac. Keep their OS's version running the app the fastest (or just being better) and let the competitor's OS have the crappy version. It's a bit of incentive to switch OS's.
Tho it is sad to hear of people loosing their music due to a bug, now that is not acceptable. - stoffe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It might be a bug this time, but it is a real risk you are facing when buying (most) DRMd content. Both Apples and Microsofts license agreements at least have provisions for revoking your rights to *your* content at any time for any reason.
Not that they will start doing that just for fun, of course. They aren't in the game to actively lose customers.
Of course there are plenty workarounds (most at the very least tedious), but there is only one solution: do not buy. If you do, you say it's ok for them to use DRM. It does not matter whatever clever trick you use to go around it, you are actively seeing to it that you will have to keep doing that!
Do not accept DRM. Ever. - gaberowe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I notice that when I installed itunes 7 all my purchased music/music videos/tv episodes all got taken out of my Purchased Music category and got put in separate categories such as Music, and TV Shows under the Library category. Initially I had the same thought that my files were gone, but they were there still. Its kinda confusing for people who have lots of ripped stuff because you used to just go to the Purchased Music category to see the files that you bought separate from the files your ripped. So I wonder like some other people said if Wil's files are actually still there somewhere on his hard drive--especially if he had a non-normal iTunes folder?
I hate how you can't redownload your music from a different computer easily--so annoying. I've had to rebuy a few songs and episodes of battlestar galactica beause I lost my only copy... grr... if it lets you play the file on multiple computers, why can't it let you redownload from their servers??? - t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@gaberowe
I'm not one to advocate piracy, but..
*breaks out in laughter*
Sorry, I couln't say that with a straight face. But anyway, when your overpriced, DRM-ed movies are being arbitrarily deleted, and Apple won't let you download them for free or give you a refund, maybe maybe it's time to think about either buying them on a DVD, which hopefully won't self destruct like the files did, or consider looking into a wonderful, if somewhat shady download service called bitTorrent.
If nothing else, download those Battlestar Galactica episodes Apple so rudely decided to take away from you. They're free, you can copy them at will, and they'll likely be in a better resolution and format, which is nice if you want to watch them on your 1280 * 1024 or whatever computer screen instead of your 320*280 or so iPod screen. And best of all, they won't commit suicide, and if they do somehow get deleted, you can get them back for free. Remember, if you rebuy your movies after they're deleted by Apple's DRM, it's like telling Apple, "Hey, if you delete my movies, I'll give you more money!" - geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"if it lets you play the file on multiple computers, why can't it let you redownload from their servers???"
Because Apple pays the studios *per download* so letting you download it twice means they owe SciFi money. There's no profit in that. - cybernezumi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@gaberowe
Looks like my purchases for the last couple years are still in the "Purchased" list, that list has just been moved to under the "Store" instead of being under the "Library". If your list has been cleared, I'd suggest making a smart playlist that has "Kind contains Protected AAC" (and maybe "Genre is not Podcast" since some old podcasts show up as Protected AAC). I did this after a corrupted library blew away my old Purchased music list. Near as I can tell my smart playlist has everything I've purchased since the store opened. Its also really handy for knowing what to backup. - BrowncoatJedi, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Star Trek Boy can just bite me.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2iPod for Winamp works great. I hate iTunes myself.
I wish there was a version that had no extra garbage. No skins, etc.. or atleast beable to disable them.
- wilwheaton, on 10/12/2007, -11/+69To be clear, once I connected my iPod to iTunes 7, and told it to transfer the purchased music, all my purchased music vanished. It's not in my library, and it's not in my iPod. The machine which I used to purchase the DRM'd music is undergoing service, so until I get it back, I don't have a way to restore the music that was lost on my iPod.
Yes, I could take all the CDs that I've burned and rip them all over again, but that's not the point. The point is I bought the music (or the right to play the music on approved devices, if you want to be pedantic), I upgraded the software, tried to use a new feature (which is really cool, if it works, IMHO) and now I have no music to show for my efforts.
But, uh, flipping through albums is neat-o.- da5idblacksun, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7That's a strange bug that you've discovered.
- larrabee, on 10/12/2007, -24/+12Wow, Will posting on digg, very cool.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -26/+10Will Wheaton?!? Too cool!
How long will it take for your story to marked as innacurate.
Negetive news about Apple doesnt last long here. - coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -19/+8Sorry for your troubles, but thats why we have back-ups.
I have my ITMS music backed-up on a external harddisk and saved onto a DVD-R (in data format rather than as audio).
Even if this happened to me it wouldnt stop me buying music from the ITMS for my iPod. - kitsonk, on 10/12/2007, -14/+13Will posts a lot on Slashdot too... He is truly one of us.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -19/+8I loved you in Toy Soldiers.
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38Your problem, Wil, is you didn't trust the russian mob. If you had, your AllOfMp3 app wouldn't have deleted your music.
So what did we learn? Yes. Always trust the russian mob;)
But in all seriousness, this really does go to show how effective DRM and content control really is. Because of it, you, a legitimate user, have an extra hassle. While the pirate shrugs it off. - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6iTunes 7 seems to be doing some odd things. It didn't recognize my iPod until I'd formatted it, and then restored it on a previous version. It looks neat, but it looks like it was a little rushed.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9I once went to this link and explained that I was a fool to not backup my music before a HD died. Apple readded every song I ever purchased to my purchase queue and the next time I started iTunes, it downloaded them (granted it took awhile due to the amount of songs I bought).
So it is possible to get your music back.
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/lostmusic/ - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I've got a 4g iPod (60GB) and didn't have any trouble at all with iTunes 7. I wonder if this might be specific to a particular model of iPod.
- Mrkamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -32/+4"Wow, Will posting on digg, very cool."
yeah Wil Wheaton, Amazing!, wow!...zowie!..who the hell is Wil "Billy-Boy?"Wheaton. - billyboobs34, on 10/12/2007, -15/+17"who the hell is Wil "Billy-Boy?"Wheaton."
Dude, you call yourself a geek? Try google.
Everyone know who Wil Wheaton is, hes one of the boys in "Stand by Me", of course!
He might have been in a little SciFi series, but you've probably never heard of it... It has Patrick Stewart in it. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Just a note for anyone else - before you start transferring music willy-nilly (Sorry Wil, bad pun) make sure that the machines are both authorized and that they're both using the same iTunes account. As soon as I did this all of my woes came to an abrupt halt.
I think this is where I make a smart ass crack about getting Data to put the isolinear chips back the way they were, or something. - NOPULSE, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3That's why everytime you BUY something from iTunes it tells you to BACK UP YOUR PURCHASES.
Come on Wil, you're smarter than this. - Mrkamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -20/+6"Dude, you call yourself a geek? Try google."
Oh Wesley Crusher thats cool. Figures he would be a mac user and have a problem. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Settle down, people, he's just a person.
- billyboobs34, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23just a person... dude Wil Wheaton can travel through time and space with his MIND!
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8While I agree that backing up is important, a users program should never cripple your files in this way.
- lakawak, on 10/12/2007, -13/+13Wow. Look at hte fanboys out in force. Blame him for not backing up his purchases. Should he have? Sure. But if this was a Microsofot "upgrade" and it did the same thing, you would not be saying "Well, in fairness, they do tell you to back up your purchases." You would all be splooging yourselves screaming how Windows once again downgraded with an upgrade.
AS for the other comments...How hysteircal that someone says "And you call yourself a geek?" Most people are NOT proud of being a geek. It isa BAD thing to be. And then there is the comment making fun of someone for now watching Star TRek! My God! That is something to be PROUD of! I have never once seen a single minute of any Star Trek and hope to never see it. Yes, I know who Wil is, but from Stand By Me. But who'd have thought that the only one to really have acareer at this point would be the fat kid. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@flag564 As much as I like Apple, I despise it for using DRM in iTunes.
- DDDoc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6iTunes has to have some sort of DRM, or else the RIAA wouldn't let anyone download music legally. They are the true criminals that are crippling the music. I'm sure apple wouldnt care to put DRM on the music if they didnt have the possibility of a lawsuit if they didnt.
- wgerik, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Sorry to hear about your woes, Wil. On the bright side, at least you'll be able to redownload your music.
I know this is well beyond the point, but I was compelled to mention that re-ripping your burned CDs is a bad idea, because you lose a considerable amount of sound quality by ripping/compressing audio files that have already been compressed.
In other words, your burned CDs were created using music you purchased from the iTunes Music Store (I'm guessing ;) in AAC format, so they've already been compressed once. When you rip the CDs into MP3s, you're effectively compressing the audio a second time and stripping more of the original sound quality from the tracks.
That could actually act as a deterrent of sorts, dissuading someone from circumventing the DRM. So you can play your twice-ripped MP3s on any device you want, but it's gonna sound like ***** ;) I'd definitely wait it out and download the music again.
-Will - LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This is why I use iOpener to un-DRM anything I buy from iTunes. If something funky happens with the elaborate key-system used to unencrypt my apple files, I don't really care. The best thing is, it's not even illegal to own music where I am (yet).
- Rocketgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wil is spot on. I got a phone call from a friend of mine 10 o clock last night, saying she had just downloaded the latest version of iTunes (v7), and had now lost all her purchased music. Given that she is a very gorgeous blue eyed blonde, I offered to fix her problem with iTunes, thinking it would be easy. Nope, she seems to have lost it. Given that she wanted the music for a meeting the next morning to indicate what music she wanted to use in a show (she's a choreographer and dancer), number one, she has just had her first rude awakening to DRM, and number two, she told all her glamorous hip and trendy friends at the meeting and around town today about what had happened with iTunes.
Good move Apple. Pissing off geeks like me won't get much notice unfortunately. Pissing off "the beautiful people" will.
As she said when I spoke to her tonight "we were all saying, it's far easier just to pirate stuff and not be restricted".
And thus the music industry loads another barrel and points the gun once again at its feet..... - regeya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@billyboobs34
If we can all find it in our hearts to forgive WIl for his slightly inaccurate post, please, make it so.
Lord, that ain't right.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Have you submitted this bug to Apple?
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Isn't the proper way to submit an issue to Apple:
- Write blog entry about your Mac going up in flames (or other issue with product)
- Post blog entry to syndicates such as digg
- receive C&D letter from Apple legal
And they say Microsoft uses strongarm tactics ;) - willynilly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't bother submitting bugs against iTunes. No matter how ***** the defect, their response is "behaves correctly." Truly crack programmers, that team.
And this is just another reason not to buy compressed, DRM-ridden music.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Isn't the proper way to submit an issue to Apple:
- Bilbobaggins, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I've had one problem with iTunes 7, and the problem I have is sometimes the music like gets all screwed up and jitters. But I just close iTunes and then reopen it and it works. Otherwise iTunes 7 is really good, except for the ugly scroll bars also I guess. Lol
- david630, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3thats happened to me too
- MattM462, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Guess who is backing up his purchased stuff right away?
- omegadan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7And thus the Apple paradox. Not *quite* sophisticated enough for the above average computer user. I find every Apple product to be wonderful but missing some small and utterly critical feature which would be easy to add.
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Will: Apple tricked you into buying DRM'ed music once. The question is: Will you be foolish enough to do it again?
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Don't comment until you read the article, m'kay?
"I love my iPod, and I love all of my Macs, but I've grown to absolutely detest Apple's DRM, and I don't think I'll buy songs from the iTMS in the future, because even though I've given them a dump truck of money in the last year or so, I currently have nothing to show for it except frustration and several empty playlists. E-mails to Apple's iTunes Music Store customer support have never been answered (they still owe me a song from an album I bought last year that didn't download,) so I currently have little recourse or opportunity to get my problems addressed. Great job, Apple! You're taking fantastic care of your customers."
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Don't comment until you read the article, m'kay?
- Zorkon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Worked fine for me on:
1) 60 gig iPod
2) 30 gig iPod
3) 6 gig iPod mini
4) 5 gig original iPod
(why so many iPods? Ask my gf. She collects them like shoes. iPods might be harder on the wallet, but they're easier on closet space, so I'm happy)
All synced flawlessly with music purchased from the music store (under both our accounts). I used the new Get Album Art feature to fill in some of the missing art on my many, many ripped tracks too. Overall, I guess I've had exactly the opposite experience as Wil - couldn't be happier.
As for Apple's DRM, I don't care. Why? Because I can still burn a CD of my music if I want to, with no DRM. If they take that away, I will be unimpressed. But as long as that feature exists, I'm a happy camper. Apple has one of the more lenient DRM systems out there - it doesn't get in my way.
If it gets in yours though, then by all means do something about it. :) - punx45, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I was going to leave a snarky comment like "should have used the new back up to disc feature" then i read the comments and it didnt seem funny anymore.
- diggdat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Deja Vu
I just read your blog today and here it is on Digg.
Loved your "tvsquad" The Naked Now piece btw.
http://www.tvsquad.com/bloggers/wil-wheaton/
For those who have not read it, it is a *very* amusing and well written walk down memory lane...
I had a good laugh,
Thanks - TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Just reading it, he swears ALOT more than you'd expect him to, Maybe Wesley would've been a more popular character if he was a badass instead.
- MillenniumGuy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2This is the way iTunes has ALWAYS treated content on the iPod. It NEVER copies FROM the iPod. It always copies from the COMPUTER you are running iTunes on, and if the song isn't on the COMPUTER, then when you synchronize the iPod it will erase files off of the iPod. This is consistent with the way iTunes has always worked.
- punx45, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0not if it is set to manual update, which his was. plus you get a warning and a chance to back out before that happens.
p.s. condolences on the loss. its things like this that make me paranoid and continue to rock the G5 1.0 software. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Except, you know, with, like iTunes 7.
Did you take the day off Digg yesterday? There about a dozen threads about it. - Zorkon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Check out the Apple Showtime event on quicktime.com if you haven't already.
With iTunes 7, the iPod can now sync music *to* a computer. The example used during the press event was that if you download music from the iTunes store onto your home computer, sync it with your iPod, then take the iPod to work and hook it up to the computer there, the work computer will receive a copy of the song.
As long as both your home and work computers are authorized for that particular iTunes account, that is.
- punx45, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0not if it is set to manual update, which his was. plus you get a warning and a chance to back out before that happens.
- spencenaz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Hmm. So, I guess they didn't have DRM on the Enterprise.
- bonked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually in the Star Trek universe, money was not an issue because they had "transended" that - so, no, information was freely exchanged.
- spencenaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Dork Alert! Lighten up it was a joke.
- stryker2you, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I had the same problem with Itunes 7 today. I had to restore from my backup :(
- scloopy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3iTunes 7 crashes every time a song finishes playing (literally) on my computer.. :(
- nzjrs, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Hey Apple Users? Hows your newest injection of DRM feel?
eMusic all the way..- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You're Dumb.
- LabRat777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Interpol and She Wants Revenge should just embrace it, and do some Joy Division covers. - Wil Wheaton
You rock ass, I WUV U! - drwatson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6iTunes 7 is a memory hog, its using 117 megs sitting idle!
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have it playing a song it's at 19 MB

- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What OS are you running? My iTunes 7 is at 22MB on my Mac and 48MB on XP (Streaming Audio from KHAHA on the XP).
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have it playing a song it's at 19 MB
- Squidly, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Call them up, explain the problem, and they'll let you re-download your Tunes. I've heard about it happening for other people.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I lost a few songs a year or so ago and I sent them an email explaining the problem and what songs I lost and they let me re-download them.
- tyns, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2When I installed 7 .. I played around with it.. then went to the music store to buy tetris (of course). When I synced my ipod to load up tetris, it told me I wasn't authorized to use tetris. Weird considering that I just bought it 5 seconds prior on the same machine? All I had to do was re-authorize my main itunes purchasing machine (a G5). All my other machines also had to be re-authorized in my house as well. I synced the ipod and everythign since has been okay.
No big deal.. but DRM, again, proves to hurt the valid user with annoyances. - kbarrett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Note to self : don't upgrade iTunes the next time it asks.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Or don't upgrade at all until forced to (older version no longer supported).
- kon27, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2If you're having audio distortion problems, try setting the priority of the iTunes.exe process to High in the Task Manager.
Never had this problem with iTunes 6, but this has eliminated most of the distortions I got in iTunes 7. Now the only time I still get this problem is when scrolling through my rather big music collection in iTunes. Seems like the developers need to increase the priority of the audio playback thread... - shredomatic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I ditched iTunes long ago in favor of anapod. I suggest you give it a try, it is a far superior product.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1if you're happy with no more firmware upgrades (since they are now internal to iTunes) go for it.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Apple purposely breaking the windows version of iTunes in order to sell more macs?
I wouldn't put it past them.- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6... Didn't the article say Wil is running ON a mac?
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It must be a conspiracy... Dear God!
Wait, No its not, you're just a moron.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just reverse the polarity of the flux generator, creating a tackian field, that will "sour the milk" and allow iTunes to re-initialize its dilithium crystal core of your iPod. Duh.
- Mrkamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No kidding! you can power it from a phaser core any 1st year cadet knows that.
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or give it a 100 Jigawatt charge directly to the power source and reboot.
- Klitzy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2May I ask who Wil Wheaton is?
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2He was Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: TNG and he was also on Lost Boys or something.
- hodyoaten, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Mr. T's real name, fool.
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I was afraid the comments system would be full of Trekki-grease at the mention of Wil.
frankly, I don't personnaly like Star Trek: TNG. But I do respect the man for this above anything else: He told G4 to go ***** themselves;)
And Trekkies, go read some real sci-fi. Start with books from the 1960s and go a little above and much below.
May I suggest Nightfall or Foundation. Some Poul Anderson is really detailed and nice if you don't mind somewhat long winded books. A lot more contemporary would be the Radix Tetrology by A.A. Attanasio or some of Greg Egan's books.
By comparison, Star Trek is to sci-fi what Dharma and Greg is to TV comedy.
It's an opinion of course, but you'd be hard pressed to turn me around on it. - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think Will was in Lost Boys but I wont state that as a fact. Are you thinking of Stand By Me?
- Lyph4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've also noticed that with iTunes 7, playback gets garbled when I launch World of Warcraft. I have to use winamp to listen to music/podcasts as I level my priest now. :(
- pmm217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same, iTunes music is garbled when WoW is running. :(
- retech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0From a mac user here... I just didn't get all the fanfare for 7.0. I do like that they fixed, after all these yrs the music gap problem (finally pink floyd plays correctly) but over all... big ***** deal S/J. I'd prefer stable over wow anyday.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Maybe you could uncouple the heisenberg compensators and beam them back - oh wait - it's DRM - It's gone forever!!!
Sorry Mr. Wheaton! - moonaust, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1WAAAAAHHHHH, I didn't backup my files...........
lesson learned. - Glen.Leaf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wil,
Are you sure the files have been deleted off your harddrive? Hopefully only the XML for your library has been corrupted.
I had a similar issue with my audiobooks. Some chapters were showing up in the Audiobooks playlist iTunes 7 automatically creates. Others chapters were showing up in the Music playlist. I deleted the ones showing up in the Music playlist from iTunes and then added them back. Now they are all in the Audiobooks playlist.
In iTunes try:
File > Add to Library > then navigate to the folder where your music is located.
On Windows XP I think it is:
My Documents > My Music > iTunes > iTunes Music - smokeyghetto, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Mac Users!!! Always REPAIR your PERMISSIONS - BEFORE and AFTER you INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE.

- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. If you're having random permissions changed on random files during an install, you have big problems.
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4That is why you should just buy the CDs. According to Weird Al the artist gets more when you purchase a CD and you have a hard copy when you need it, oh, and no DRM, oh and better quality.
All this DRM crap just makes me want to pirate music.- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Hmmmmm, No, LimeWire is Cheaper and it doesn't smell like Wal-Mart or the Mall on a hot Saturday afternoon.
- GloverCom, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1DRM is annoying, yes... But without it you wouldn't be using iTunes at all. Nor would the majority of people (i.e., NOT geeks like us) have legal and instant access to their favorite music.
@The idiots that say "Dude, all music should be free!": Put the bong down and get a life. Musicians deserve compensation. Regardless of how f*cked up the music industry is, musicians are still in the pipeline and deserve to be paid for their work. Maybe you'll realize that if you'd mooching off your parents and get an actual job.- Vryz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The only people who complain about DRM are people who are using it -- people who legally purchased music. If they had pirated it, there wouldn't be any DRM. Clearly the complainers do not feel like artists shouldn't be paid for their work, since they are paying for it.
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3***** you and ***** That.

I use and do not complain about DRM. At least not with Apple's version of DRM. Everything works once you authorize your computer. I do understand that ripping to Audio CD and back is lower quailty but what I buy on iTunes is usually a single or an album that is no longer available on CD. For example: Does anyone know where I can get Twisted Sister's Love is for Suckers CD. Not the single or the greatest hits.

Macintosh HD > Music > iTunes > iTunes Music - CrackHappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man, I'm going blind...
I read the title of this story as "Wii Wheaton" three times in a row. I was very confused for a minute as I pictured Wil as a video game you had to play on the Wii where you had to live his life (like the Sims)...
But anyway, sorry to hear about your troubles Wil. - Amnesia10, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1On the basis of this post I tried to find my purchased music, no problems, though what I would suggest to wil is to search his drives to see where it has been transferred to.
The initial run took a long time for me to get through where it updates it and scans for seamless cross over between tracks though that was because I have 25500+ tracks. I already have artwork for 90% of the listings so it was not that. It did kill off my beatunes (www.beatunes.com) program though there is a new version that seems to work.
The fancy graphics switching between listings is cool though. Oh just for the record I am a mac user who is happy with the upgrade. - Broccoli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Seems mac users got the better end of the deal with itunes 7. However apple cannot ignore the pc version like they seem to be doing.
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How's Apple ignoring PC users? You got a simultaneous release. That's more than most companies give anyone else with the exception of Adobe.
Plus this is a bug that is not affecting all Mac or Windows machines. I have both and iTunes 7 went in without a problem.

- riddlebox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well I will gladly say that I usually "set sail" me matey. D"Arrr"M is nothing but some scavenger's around these parts. Either subscribe to hell's demons...or trust the sweed's. I usually drop the anker around those domains. Apple doesn't step foot of my ship. Steve Jobs along with the RIAA will walk thee plank. Ah hoy! Thats is golden treasure that I am sharing with everyone.:)
- catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like lots of others, I really like Wil, he's a fun loving nerd, and I'm happy for his success, but he's starting to get on my nerves. When is Wil gonna stop ***** around and DO SOMETHING (i.e. act, write, direct, produce, wtf ever, make a contribution to his bread and butter). I realize stage, TV, or film isn't easy, lots and lots of things must go right, but Mr. Wheaton is in an exceptional position to get stuff done because of his positive attitude, but, I think, mostly because of his notoriety... so its about time he stopped stroking himself and started producing (in the general sense of doing anything productive, and no, for the most part, blogs are not all that productive, more of a dick-pull). If he is doing stuff... well... I guess I'm in error being annoyed. But otherwise... Get yer ***** together, Wil... you made a family, that's commendable, now how about doing something your family (and everyone else) can be in awe of... like your own Citizen Kane, or Dances With Wolves or something. We already like you, stop being so nice, turn that genius on, and get something done.
- NinjAlt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wil Wheaton's music lost pattern lock. Maybe its still in the transporter buffer!
- Saint3k, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Oh man, Wil Wheaton is having iTunes problems, everyone panic!
I love it how he can claim to be a geek, and suddenly everyone worships him like a god. Being a geek does not make you smart, Wil. Nor does it provide you with political, economical, or moral insight. All it means is that you have the ability to troubleshoot and maintain electronic equipment and/or computers, and you can't even do that right.- DavidDigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Geek: Ahem.

Data: Captain, I've detected a social anomoly on the planet's surface
Picard: On screen.
/on main viewer screen/ Geek: I am geek, bow down before me!
Picard: Oh dear. It's worse than I imagined.
Data: Yes captain, the last time we saw Wesley Crusher, he was fornicating with aliens. He seemed especially drawn to the one in the tight---
Picard: That's enough Data.
Data: Yes, sir.
Picard: He must be stopped.

- zeiben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Aced all his academy exams and can't work apple software... go figure.
I bet Hugh could do it (the hive mind being amazingly similar to that of an apple fanboy). - twitndiggfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I launched iTunes 7 and it told me my music was in a folder that I don't have the permissions to edit. I had to delete my XML file and put all the music back into iTunes. I lost all my playlists. It is considerably faster though.
- mattjumbo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Sorry for Wil, sorry for anyone who had problems.
But I think there is a lot of bash-Apple-because-we-can on this thread, so I wanted to add a few things:
1.) Anyone who "hates Apple" because of DRM has no clue what they are talking about. Apple makes next to nothing on selling songs, TV shows, or movies. The DRM is there because the studios demand it. DRM is also there because, if it wasn't the studios would eventually go out of business or go to some expensive, arcane fomat to try to kill off piracy.
2.) iTunes 7 has worked like a charm for me. Not a problem. Apple has, in fact, tried to make backup and syncing even easier. You can now authorize a computer and pull the files *off* your iPod and *onto* a new machine.
If Wil has his music on his iPod, he will be okay. Even if he doesn't, Apple *will* let him re-download it.
Relax. - eth3l, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3iTunes sucks
- tarman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1need a better way to transfer other than itunes
- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, between this and the apple/itunes support forum, I can't believe how many issues there are with IT7. I downloaded and upgraded with only one tiny issue that I easily fixed on my XP machine, but would have been P.O'ed if what happened to Wil happened to me. Love the post on the blog Wil about everything you "checked", Picard and Data would have been proud! Sorry to hear what happened. Guess it is time for me to backup my music.
- starbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks for the post, Will.
{Blank DVD - in. Backing up Purchased Music. Done) - realyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow...people with valid points are getting modded down and people who haven't taken off their Cap'n Kirk outfit for the last 4 years or think they're original making a ST joke get modded up....truly sad.
Truly the difference between geek and dork is being shown. -
