- 3monkeys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Arrrgggg https not http. Sorry guys again for clarity https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/744/
- mandidp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29No matter how much you like Wikipedia, you have to admit that their search engine could DEFINITELY use some improving.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Am I for some odd reason, the only person that gets redirected to the main firefox add-on page, and not the actual extension page?
The digg link looks like it goes to the right page, but I get redirected to main page for some odd reason. - ZorboMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wikipedia search does suck, but what I often do is search on Google and add the text "wiki" at the end of my search. The majority of the time you can even click the "I'm feeling lucky" button and it'll take right to the correct page.
- intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It uses wikipedia for me.
And I agree, great extension. - CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Or, you could just add the Wikipedia search engine:
https://addons.mozilla.org/search-engines.php - snuffulupagus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why don't you use the Context Search extension, which puts all of your toolbar search extensions in the normal "search web for text" dialog?
http://www.cusser.net/extensions/contextsearch/ - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You don't need an extension for this. http://johnbokma.com/firefox/keymarks-explained.html
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4pretty much anyone who wants a good experience with wikipedia finds themselves putting "wiki" after the word on google
- GoatJuggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dudes, just type 'wiki _subject_' in the firefox address bar. i.e. wiki flying spaghetti monster
- tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kinda of lame, DictionarySearch has done this for ages and it can search multiple sources too:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/68/ - protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I use the DictionarySearch extension, which can search pretty much anything with a search URL, in addition to dictionaries. For example, to search wikipedia I set a 'dictionary URL' to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search/$. $ is the variable DictionarySearch uses to fill highlighted text. So I highlight some text and right click, and I get an option to define the text or search wikipedia for the text, imdb the text, etc....
- jameslheard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3not sure were i found this but in firefox you can add a link to you bookmarks toolbar to do a search on wikipedia.
javascript:Qr=document.getSelection();if(!Qr){void(Qr=prompt('Search en.wikipedia.org',''))};if(Qr)location.href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search='+escape(Qr)+'&go=Go'
just highlight text you want to search for and click it, no text is selected will bring up a search box. - jameslheard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sry code above should have been
javascript:Qr=document.getSelection();if(!Qr){void(Qr=prompt('Search en.wikipedia.org',''))};if(Qr)location.href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search='
+escape(Qr)+'&go=Go' - skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Neat. I've always wanted an extension that did that.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um... keymarks... ?
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Aaaaargh!
That thing is horrible!
The ugliest extension I have seen in a long time.
And the crawling text - am I watching MTV??
What a waste of time. - makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2In Firefox, I just type 'wiki keyword' and, 99% of the time, it takes me to the right page (from what I've heard, and observed in the status bar, it's the same thing as Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky"). Just a matter of convenience; CTRL+L, a few keys, and I'm there.
- ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah i use context search... one of the best extensions... should be put into the main build
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Stuff like this amaze me. The most basic functions need an extension in Firefox. I have over 30 custom searches that I just have to hit a key to perform here in Opera. Quick and simple, and all I needed was notepad.
- Fett101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactley. it's built right into the the bookmarks people!
- meatshoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Opera users: You can change the default behavior of the Encyclopedia option on your right click menu for selected text to use Wikipedia by editing %appdata%OperaOperaprofilesearch.ini
Learn more about search.ini here: http://www.schrode.net/opera/search/search_ini.html - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've never found anything that comes close to Dave's Quick Search Deskbar (on Windows anyway). No matter what application I'm in a single keyboard shortcut lets me search just about any site out there--including Wikipedia--whether I have a browser open or not. The search bar replaces the clock so it doesn't even take up any taskbar space. It includes utilities (alarm, calculator, tinyurl generator etc.), hundreds of search engines, and you can add your own easily.
I couldn't live without it: http://www.dqsd.net/ - motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using this one for a long time, it's a great extension.
Digg - firemaker103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um... https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/735/.
- Mortiferous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When i first installed it it instantly reminded me of an auto-installed IE toolbar/spyware combo, and i had to get rid of it immediately on the basis that it disgusted me.
- Innagadadavida, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the same extension. I've been using for Wikipedia for a very long time.
- tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You would still have to copy and paste with that method. These extensions allow you to simple select text, and right click to look up the word.
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I replaced the URL of the Wikipedia Quicksearch (check your bookmarks) with:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aen.wikipedia.org+%s&btnI=I'm+Feeling+Lucky&meta=
then I just type wp some topic in the address bar and it does an "I'm Feeling Lucky" Google search for "some topic", restricted to the English Wikipedia. It's faster and (usually) more accurate than using the built-in search. - libertao, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Save this as a keyword search:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site:en.w ... - MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Old old old.
- rgov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Next time, please mention that it's a Firefox extension. The only clue from the post was that it was on mozilla.org. "Extension" is not a term exclusive to Firefox, and can refer to many technologies (or even be interpreted as Wikipedia's own search function being updated).
It's kind of cliche, but remember the fine balance between quality and quantity. Digg is currently outperforming traditional news sites because it's got more news, and it has it faster. But it's greatly lacking in the quality department. - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1aha
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yet another search extension?
Just add yubnub search plug-in to Firefox. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's cool and all , and there are a few extensions like it.
I use con query, it is easy to program with new queries
I have made queries for wikipedia, gamespot, imdb, rotten tomatoes..(need to make one for quick digg searches but have been lazy this weak).. it comes with a few like google
I like it for torrents with out descriptions.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/231/ - Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do the exact same thing. Works great.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not just visit the language wikipedia page of choice, (de.wikipedia.com, it.wikipedia.com, en.wikipeida.com, pl.wikipedia.com, etc) right-click the search text-box and create a new firefox keyword search?
Seems that would be much easier if you want to search in a specific language.
And it would not require another firefox plug-in to be installed.
...eh, just a suggestion. - JohnHeart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DictionarySearch extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/68/) is better than this. No need of highlighting the word. Just press the Ctrl or Alt key and click the word and voila! DictionarySearch extension will give you the info on New tab, New window or a pop-up window.
- bbarker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use an extension called ConQuery that adds "Query to..." to your right-click menu with a list of all (selectable and sortable) of the search engines you have loaded. There are tons of searches available from Mycroft including WikiPedia, Google, Amazon, eBay, IMDB...the list goes on and on.
ConQuery - http://conquery.mozdev.org/
MyCroft search engines - http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ - ejdmoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Using wp works better.
The way you're doing it goes through Google first, and Wikipedia is usually the first result, but not always. Using wp (in Firefox) uses the Wikipedia search. - slashdotislame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the hell is "lookups"?
- volta314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i find the googlepedia extension to be much more useful. makes use of the empty and ad-filled right side of the page.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2517/ - ZorboMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm not the best when it comes to Javascript, so could someone tell me how to get this to pop up in a new tab or window?
- ZorboMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is a cool extension and as someone who has just recently switched to Firefox it's something I've been missing for a while. I actually made an extension for IE (or whatever it would be called in IE) that does the same. I also made one that searches IMDB and Ebert's movie reviews. One of these days I'll look into making a FF extension and add these.
- ZorboMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It looks like there's a newline in there, but I was able to get this to work by copying the whole thing, pasting in notepad and fixing the newline. I think I might actually like this more than the extension...I'll be able to add other site's searches using this method. Thanks James!
- bwoodall, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1it uses answers.com, not wikipedia
great extension though - stratmancj, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4link to actual exetension:

What is Digg?
