- Aadain, on 10/29/2008, -31/+76Three simple words for MS:
Remove. The. Bloat.
Vista is a resource hog, plain and simple. It hogs memory, CPU, GPU, and disk space without giving an equivalent boot in productivity.
One thing that has always ticked me off with Windows (XP, Vista, probably even 7) is how it is always trying to protect me from myself. That's fine for grandma and the receptionist, but give me a one button solution that TURNS OFF ALL THE ANNOYING NOTIFICATION MESSAGES! I don't care if there are unused icons on my desktop. No, I don't want to take a tour of Windows. Yes, I can see that I have installed a new program, stop highlighting it every f'n time I open the start menu until I click on every item in that program group, including the "register me" and "online manual" links!
/rant off.
Basically, I want a turn key option to switch Windows from Grandma Mode to Power User Mode and just get out of my way. But Windows 7 will probably continue the trend of putting round corners on everything and making sure nobody falls down and scrapes their knees. - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -13/+48I'm going to be honest here. I was baffled to see the popularity of the new Windows 7 screenshots, some people claiming it's the largest aesthetic upgrade since '95. Windows 7 looks like exactly like Vista, with minor changes, and a slight KDE inspiration.
Now don't get me wrong, I think Vista is actually a pretty OS, but so is Mac (I'd argue, more so), Windows needs to work on functionality, here's to hoping we haven't seen the best of it yet. - pirlok, on 10/30/2008, -2/+27Q: Will Windows 7 Be Better Than Vista?
A: Because Steve Ballmer said that: "Windows 7 will be Vista, but a lot better."
I can't wait for Windows 7 to come out. I'm sure that Microsoft got it right this time! - suntzusputnik, on 10/30/2008, -0/+19you can't answer a yes or no question with a 'because'
- sjmulder, on 10/30/2008, -1/+20I wanted to type a comment but Safari 'unexpectedly quit'.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/30/2008, -1/+16I think you are actually making Adain's point. There are individual tweaks for each of those things, but he wants a single button to switch from Grandma mode to Power User mode.
- improllyatwork, on 10/30/2008, -4/+19I have vista and i am still waiting to see why everyone gives it a bad wrap. Do people who have macs have issues and bugs, but are too stubborn to admit it? i am seeing a trend here...
- PigGeneral, on 10/30/2008, -0/+13In Microsoft's defense, they have more to worry about than Mac when designing an OS.
Get a PC, put windows and all Microsoft software on the machine, and yeah, you will not see errors either. Mac's have error messages. Wander a little farther off the beaten path.
Microsoft's bad rap comes from them having to keep the OS working with software written for XP. If they re-write the kernel so software on XP doesn't run, no one will buy it. People wouldn't care if Windows 7 cured cancer, caused world peace, and spit out free gasoline. - Sliver85, on 10/30/2008, -4/+17You mean, just like Vista had?
- samanathon, on 10/30/2008, -1/+14Wait - you don't think that there was a huge visual difference between Win2K and XP?
- lacronicus, on 10/30/2008, -5/+17Then rejoice in the fact that windows 7 does exactly that. You can adjust UAC to your liking, you can modify system tray notifications, and every windows "Alert" has been moved to the control panel so you are free to ignore it as you please.
Also, it runs on a netbook. If that doesn't work for you, then I don't know what will. - headband, on 10/30/2008, -2/+13copying apple???
The surface had multi-touch before the iphone did - Slade605, on 10/30/2008, -1/+11Because a Mac is very limited on hardware upgrades... a lot of us like to keep up with the times and whenever a new GPU or PCI/PCI:E device comes out, we want to try it.
- Fleagleman, on 10/30/2008, -3/+13Hmmmm. Which front page article on Digg do I want to read, "Why Windows 7 will be Better than Visa", or "Why Windows 7 will Smash Vista"? I think I'll wait for, "Why Windows 7 will Rape Vista"
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/30/2008, -2/+12The end of the article discusses search once again. That seems to be a huge feature for MS recently. All the articles about Windows imply that they feel search is huge and a must-have. Am I the only one who feels the opposite way? Yes, I have to search for a file occasionally, but in general I feel I've got all my files, etc. organized so I know where they are. I certainly have no desire to have one central location from which to do a search that includes local files/folders, the web, etc. I don't use any of the browser toolbars or other search add-ons from the likes of Google, Yahoo, etc. I simply don't see the need for any of them. If MS is focusing so heavily on search I can see it being integrated as a core component of new versions of Windows, but to me that's just additional unwanted bloat.
- cday, on 10/30/2008, -4/+13Will Windows 7 Be Better Than Vista??
Well, with all the PR noise, one would only hope...but then being better than Vista isn't exactly a high hurdle, is it? It'll be interesting to watch how it goes. Personally, I like seeing the competition heating up and Microsoft scrambling to catch up with the rest of the world. It seemed like they'd stay stuck in the 90s forever...sort of like a dinosaur in the tar pits. - Clbull, on 10/30/2008, -3/+12Buried for
A) Apple fanboyism
B) Saying that Macintosh is the name of the company, when it is actually Apple. - silverspyder, on 10/30/2008, -8/+17it can't be much worse
- geoken, on 10/30/2008, -1/+8Why, what awesome stuff is everyone doing that Windows isn't?
They had an actual 64bit OS way before Apple. They had system wide versioning backups (previous versions) before time machine. Their metadata based file management is ahead of all OSes. Their touchscreen support is the most refined. Etc, etc. - bodger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+7His post wasn't about UAC specifically.
- GordonFree, on 10/30/2008, -3/+10You mean "Apple".
And do you actually think OS X is better as an operating system?
The interface is prettier. Leopard is slow as hell though. I dunno, XP is not unix based, but does a pretty good job for what it is. - betrayed, on 10/30/2008, -4/+10If you were truly a power user, you would know there are registry tweaks for each and every one of those issues. Also, if you want to be able to fall down and scrape your knee, go use *nix.
- Scott2, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6You of course realize, that Gamers make up a RELATIVELY SMALL portion of the Windows user base?
Of home users, gamers are big.
Next to corporations, gamers are a speck. - wtfgecko, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6What the hell are you talking about?
Apple have released 5 upgrades to OS X since XP was released, each of which cost $129 for fixes/features that are the same as the service pack releases for Windows(and even one for Vista), again, the same amount of features/patches as any Tiger->Leopard was, yet Microsoft made these service packs free.
Shut the hell up okay? - geoken, on 10/30/2008, -5/+11Wow, for a power user you sure seem pretty inept.
From how-to-geek (second link on a google search for "disable UAC"):
Open up Control Panel, and type in "UAC" into the search box. You'll see a link for "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off"
The rest of the ***** you mentioned can also be disabled with the click of a single checkbox. I always thought right-clicking something (like the start menu) and going into the settings menu was a standard practice for power users. I guess, since you haven't found the option to disable new program notification, it isn't (or maybe you simply aren't the 'power user' you think you are). - Darkhacker, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6"Windows 7 will be to vista just what xp was to win 2k.. not much visual difference but a lot of changes under the hood."
Firstly, there were hardly any changes under the hood between win2k and XP. Nearly all the changes focused on user experience. It was the jump from XP to Vista where Microsoft really started fiddling with the internals of NT. Secondly, Microsoft is avoiding changes under the hood of Win7 so that hardware and software will still be compatible. - githoc, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5Microsoft have put more into researching multitouch than Apple has. Apple just bought a company which had a fully developed product.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7those are some lame reasons as to why 7 will be better than vista.
- geoken, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5It's kind of ironic that you talk about Windows needing to change things on a functional level, then questioning people's excitement based on the visual similarities between Vista/7. People where excited because of the functional changes, the new taskbar, quick tiling, jump list, etc.
- spiralspirit, on 10/30/2008, -3/+8I've been using vista for about 2 weeks and so far its great. No compatibility issues, snappier, prettier, and a bunch of new features. Runs everything I need it to run without hiccup. Not sure if the vista hate is due to all the driver issues I heard about when it was released, but if you have a semi modern computer (mine was built about 2 years ago) you should have no problems.
- Platypus3333, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5You sound like an angry dude.
- Slade605, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Touché
- GenericJoshman, on 10/30/2008, -2/+6Go suck an idick *****.
- psibladeZX, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4I run Vista 64... I had the 32bit version for a while and it was relatively slow at some points even with 3gb of ram installed... Vista 64 on the other hand is damn fast... and Windows Media Center is awesome... That's my main reason for liking vista so much. I dont understand why it got such a bad wrap... I remember the days when XP had a bad wrap... I actually got more BSOD's with XP than with Vista. I have never had Vista crash. I wouldnt consider myself a power user by any means... I write and compile c++ code, play games (crysis runs pretty smooth (30ish fps) w/o AA turned on), burn dvds, watch/listen to media... etc. I turned the UAC off and nothing really bothers me... I must be one of a few who actually like Vista *shrug*
- deweyhewson, on 10/30/2008, -8/+12*sigh* This is one of those threads that users have to come in and say the following:
I use Vista, and (surprise!) I like it. It's slick, looks good, and has NEVER crashed on me. Not once, for any reason, even with all the tweaking I do. No, I don't get quite the gaming performance I got out of XP, but it's marginal at worst.
It plays the games I like (insert obligatory no-Mac-games comment here), runs the productivity software I need, includes the excellent Media Center for my HTPC uses, and has given me zero problems. And, as an important contrast to Apple, runs on a huge variety of hardware, most of which has built-in support.
But hey, Vista sucks. Because, uh, you know, Apple said it does. And they are just so darn clever! - mycoplasma, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4It's called sarcasm. Maybe this will help you understand:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm - Slade605, on 10/30/2008, -1/+5I've always understood a power user to be someone who knows their computer, and ADDS to it to make it better and improve the power of the tools they are using, not removing stuff because it's annoying as *****.
- rgersmrk, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4I've been using Vista 64 since SP1 and it's worked great. I still have a few gripes but it's nothing that prevents me from doing work or playing games. Pre-SP1 Vista was a nightmare for many reasons, some not Microsoft's fault, most were though. Windows 7 looks like it's going to be a really good version of Windows with all of the refinements coming. Kind of reminds me of Windows 98 and XP.
It's good to see Microsoft is learning from it's mistakes and are trying to make up for them. Kudos to them for that. - YourMaster, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Well isn't that kind of ironic? You want a grandma-friendly button to escape from grandma-mode?
- basslineshift, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4I thought it was because it couldn't get any worse, which makes anything else .. better..
- GordonFree, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3No, you must have a miracle installation, or you might just not notice. Because everyone complains about it being super slow.
- mycoplasma, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Don't you mean "Why Linux already is better than Windows"?
- sjmulder, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Different article.
- theOster, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3had to laugh at that.
- teamwasted, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3"He typed his comment with ferocious intensity as he wiped the sweat from his brow"
Is ***** like that^ really necessary for an article like this? Not to ***** on this guys typing, but I'm not trying to read a story. - thedragon4453, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Most of the time the "ms copied apple" and "apple copied ms" arguments ought to just be left out. At this point its kind of like saying "gm copied ford by including a windshield wiper."
If they didn't copy each other all we'd have is two mish-mash ***** OS's that nobody wanted to use. - Digitalfluid, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3You mean Service Pack 2, since SP 1 was released already :)
- Tape99, on 10/30/2008, -3/+6Vista is a good OS i think windows 7 will all so be as good
- sjmulder, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3One little correction, 10.1 was free for 10.0 users.
