- AmyVernon, on 10/26/2009, -1/+82That's nothin'. When's the White House going to institute its own version of Digg, where we can vote policy issues onto the front page? Of course, there will have to be a separate category for Megan Fox photos.
- munikho, on 10/26/2009, -1/+67And all the way down, i manage to find out that it's Drupal they are talking about...
- Eupatorus, on 10/25/2009, -11/+60Change you can believe in.
- bakajojo, on 10/26/2009, -2/+47For those that doesn't want to read a wall of text, it's drupal....
- v0ider, on 10/26/2009, -1/+42This means than when an exploit is released for Drupal, WhiteHouse.gov will be defaced by script kiddies.
- magic6435, on 10/26/2009, -3/+40Who the ***** wrote that piece of *****. takes them two pages to just say Drupal. Waste of goddamn time.
- bitweever, on 10/26/2009, -0/+23No kidding. It was so dumbed down, it was annoying...
- algaeturd, on 10/26/2009, -0/+22Meanwhile, the RNC posted the administrator's password on the index page of their site.
- Kettek, on 10/26/2009, -5/+25It's a move in the right direction, but...
Obama still appoints RIAA lawyers to top cabinet positions, and that cabinet still supports the RIAA.

I think it's a great step forward that this administration is embracing open source. But I hope they're keeping a tight rein on cost. At the end of the day if you're paying out a boatload of money to open source consultants you may not be saving money in the long run. The big upside is all of the modules available from the open source community that will allow them implement new features more quickly (in theory).
I also hope that the new CIO (Vivek Kundra) isn't so hell bent on open source that he pushes it for applications where it is not the best solution. Use Open Source when it is the better answer. Use commercial software when it is the better answer. Know the difference. - nullity, on 10/26/2009, -0/+14One could also say that this means when a vulnerability is fixed in Drupal, it is also fixed on whitehouse.gov, and at the same time, Drupal will benefit from the intense code review that I'm sure is required for it to be used in such a high profile site.

- tacojohn48, on 10/26/2009, -2/+12Do you know how much of a disaster that could be. We can't just let people vote on policies. This country is not a democracy. (really it isn't)
- jasmus, on 10/26/2009, -3/+12Hi Microsoft!
Seriously, "open source apps have more security holes and bugs in them" is a HUGE claim. I would claim that open source products have fewer bugs and security holes because more people can see the code and correct any issues.
This is a great test of both theories, and I can't wait to see how this all pans out. - rabidjester, on 10/26/2009, -3/+12Is this outrageous move by the Obama administration just another small step toward commiesocialfacism, or could it be part of something far more sinister? Tune in tonight, 8 Eastern to Hannity to learn the real story!

- RC212V, on 10/26/2009, -2/+11On balance Apache servers running on Linux get compromised WAY less than IIS servers on Windows Server. And I am a Microsoft developer by trade.
Just because something is Open Source doesn't mean it is insecure and by the same token proprietary != secure. It depends on the particular piece of software in question. - empath, on 10/26/2009, -1/+9That's such a weird article. It reads like the author just looked up all the terms on wikipedia right before he wrote it. I mean, the White House switched to Drupal to power it's blog -- and? Thousands of sites use Drupal. I don't see what the big deal is.
And aside from that, they've been using Drupal since almost the beginning on various exec branch websites:
http://techpresident.com/blog-entry/why-white-hous ... - relaxeder, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7Actually they did something like that a few times during the administrative transition, there was a website where users could sign in and vote on other user-submitted questions and issues. I wish they would do that again, it was an interesting experiment.

- cosmicdreams, on 10/26/2009, -0/+6As an extension of your theory, we will see how well Drupal holds up to the entire world's efforts to deface the white house website. If the website is defaced in a day then the world to form a low opinion of the codebase. And if the site never has a security breach then we should opt a high opinion of the codebase. Because we can be sure that someone will try to break into the site.
- ZiggityZhang, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5I'm waiting for them to switch to voting machines with open source.
- jaytek13, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5Do you actually think that the majority of Americans even know what "open source" means, or cares? Or are you just trolling?
I'm going to go with the latter. - brettmjohnson, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5That xkcd had me howling...
Until my mom asked me how she could make her knitting blog have flashing stars in the background... - A11YND, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5You do realise the White House *had* a digg clone, right? It was called Open For Questions and it was a pretty interesting concept.
- sonofabiscuit, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5I doesn't like reading walls of text either.
- novenator, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5How would an open source codebase create jobs? How are the two related?
- MWeather, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4If they did that, they'd have to ignore the most voted on issue again.
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4Maybe he's arguing that closed source is more insecure, less backward compatible by design and has extra upgrade cycles just to milk more money out of the customers. Thus requiring more personnel to maintain the service?
- Willis3D, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5uh... you'll find a Republican involved in 9 out of 10 gay sex scandal. Usually after speak-out against gay rights.
- AngelBunny, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4It would be cool if the videos on that site where hosted using a streaming bit torrent like protocol. I'm sure both AT&T and Comcast wouldn't be to happy about that.
- ell0bo, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3I believe that's call Congress, however when I asked them about their web interface they said it was delayed because the dump trucks couldn't fit through the series of tubes.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/26/2009, -4/+6Wow, so now we're paying an non-qauaified CTO $18mil for a Drupal install? Great...
- Atario, on 10/26/2009, -2/+4Wait...is it?...Could it be? A non-sarcastic instance of that exact comment, on Digg?
- theaceoffire, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I can understand why he did though... We have a lot of things to fight for right now (Healthcare, Gay Rights, Human Rights, Fixing the mess we made in Europe, Patching Foreign Relations, Forcing Corporations to slow spending of public money, etc).
If you don't pick and choose which one to work with at a time, then you could lose *all* of them. While I feel that the punishment and criminalization of some drugs is over the line, I feel that some of these other issues are a bigger deal right now. - SammyboyKIDDAH, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Sounds good to me.
- SubEl, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I think that was only change.gov, or one of their other websites.
- nullity, on 10/26/2009, -2/+4"At the end of the day if you're paying out a boatload of money to open source consultants you may not be saving money in the long run."
As opposed to paying a boatload of money to consultants to manage your custom-built closed-source content management system?
This is not like Windows vs. Linux, where support for the closed source option is cheap and widely available. Drupal is the most widely supported option here. Does a closed source alternative even exist? I've seen a couple of closed source CMSes, and they were light years behind Drupal in terms of functionality. - dayv2005, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I agree. When i first started to read this article i was glancing and expecting to see Joomla somewhere. Then i read DRUPAL WTF.
- CynicalTyler, on 10/26/2009, -1/+3Hi, welcome to America! We have this thing called "politics" here...
- theaceoffire, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1I would actually consider using an open source voting machine.
Lord knows it would be far more secure than Dytel's crappy machines. - Nanobe, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Sadly, the site has some pretty major accessibility issues. They apparently *deliberately* hid the focus rectangle from all elements, so it's nearly impossible to navigate by keyboard. There's also a lot of redundant text that screen readers have to read through (for example: "Link, Health Insurance Reform and Women [a paragraph and video link] Graphic, Health Insurance Reform and Women. Link, Graphic, Health Insurance Reform and Women"). Also, if you have a CSS-capable browser, you had better make sure images are enabled as well, or else you'll have a very tough time navigating.
- Alejandro79, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2They almost certainly are scraping the Drupal content and serving it as static content. We do that at my University. "Oh, a security release? Yeah, we'll get around to installing that sometime." It's a great solution, actually.
- internetcoward, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1much like the white house does all of the time... wmd's, not having sex with interns, the vietnam war was provoked ect ect ect
- amoeba, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1woohoo! Drupal rocks ( ^ - ^) just keeps getting better. This is only good news for the open source community.
- RC212V, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2There are a few proprietary CMS's chief among those being Sharepoint. When you start getting into the distributed Sharepoint farm the licensing gets into the 5 digits but when you're paying 4 different contractors to build Whitehouse.gov chances are you're spending into the millions for your Drupal install. The point I'm making is just because Drupal is open source doesn't automatically mean you will save money overall against the closed source option.
In this case I don't know how much money was spent on the site. And from what I've seen paying Sharepoint consultants costs a boatload of money too. Just pointing out that just because the software is free doesn't mean you can't blow your budget on the implementation. - jerryjamesstone, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2I think it is a form of political foreplay. Speak out against gay sex or adultery right before doing it...
