- destructo66, on 10/12/2008, -7/+51Lame - No mention of Final Cut Pro (the app Pros use) or Sony Vegas.
Horrible comparisons. - Phoenixheart, on 10/11/2008, -13/+49Windows Movie Maker, anyone?
=)) - inactive, on 10/12/2008, -6/+34Cmon, gotta show Vegas some love.
- fenderbiz, on 10/12/2008, -5/+31Vegas. Final Cut.
- kjcdude, on 10/12/2008, -4/+26Premiere Pro all the way
- SilverBlade2k, on 10/12/2008, -5/+27You're calling Adobe Premiere a 'kiddie app'?
- spunquik, on 10/11/2008, -17/+34ewww to all of those kiddie applications.
Avid all the way. - shethinkmefunny, on 10/12/2008, -1/+18feh. binary editor.
- MAARRS, on 10/12/2008, -0/+16yeah, avid is a bazooka for a water fight.
This article isn't about pro edits. it even mentions you tube in the heading. Good tough guy geek call. yeah, Avid is great, but i'm not spending a thou to make my drunken buddy vids Xtra special for the web set.
(ok, i would have just Isohunt -ed it, but the point is the same...) - David513, on 10/12/2008, -1/+15Whoever wrote that article is woefully ignorant, to put it in the nicest possible way. Anybody trying to put Premiere Pro and iMovie into the same category has no idea what he's doing. While iMovie is Apple's free consumer-level video editing application, Premiere Pro is Adobe's NLE app aimed at the pro market. Premiere Pro is properly compared to Final Cut Pro or Avid, NOT to iMovie.
I'm a part-time independent filmmaker, and the vast majority of filmmakers I know use and prefer Final Cut Pro. Premiere Pro and (to a lesser extent) Sony Vegas have strong minority followings. Those whose backgrounds have been more from the studio system are more accustomed to the older Avid offerings. Far and away, though, Final Cut Pro is the one that's taking over the part of the market that doesn't have $100 million budgets.
Among the freebies, I don't have much of an opinion. I liked the older versions of iMovie, but I don't use the new one these days. For Windows apps, all I can say is that Windows MovieMaker is truly awful. I'm not familiar enough with the other Windows consumer-oriented apps to have opinions about them. - 1337director, on 10/12/2008, -0/+13Avid sucks. Shoddy coding, incongruity between their software family's own products, a tyrannical file organization structure, and an outdated, non-intuitive interface for an NLE. Good tech specs on paper, but terrible to work with. I would say Final Cut Pro FTW if they would get their head out of their ass with Blu-ray.

- Dotcommer, on 10/12/2008, -4/+12TO ALL YOU YOUTUBE *****-VIDEO CREATORS:::
Use whatever program you want to edit your lame ass movie with, but please, for the love of god, DONT use windows movie maker. I... I can't take it anymore. Its sooo baad... - fegul, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7Add After Effects + Dynamic Link to the mix and you can do just about anything
- AngelBunny, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7what about final cut pro?
and any program out there besides virtual dub support direct stream output instead of re-encoding? because of this virtual dub, a freeware tool, still is used today more than all of these other programs when it comes to encoding and finalizing. - Hanny26, on 10/12/2008, -2/+9Vegas
- BossKey, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7True, if you're going to aim for using software better than Windows MovieMaker and iMovie you should be uploading to a site like Vimeo at least.
- 007isbond1, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7dugg for cheating apple.
- subigo, on 10/12/2008, -1/+8Seriously.
Screw everything else. - bradleyland, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7"Which Video Editing Program Should You(Tube) Use?"
The clever title (sarcasm) is meant to imply that these programs would be used by the casual YouTube user. Which led me to wonder why they bothered mentioning Premiere Pro. Prices from Amazon:
$790 Adobe Premiere Pro CS4
$95 Corel VideoStudio Pro X2
$125 Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 12
$80 iMovie (as part of iLife '08; free with a new Mac)
/sings One of these things is not like the other...
Sony Vegas would be a great addition at $100. It has lots of great features that are easy to use. Including FCP at $1300 (for the suite) doesn't seem to make much sense either, nor does Avid ($2500). - DismantleRepair, on 10/12/2008, -1/+7Vegas. So easy to use.
- lanfordr, on 10/12/2008, -1/+7Really the industry standard is Avid, followed closely by Final Cut Pro. If you really want to get your feet wet in the editing world, take the time to learn one of these two products. Otherwise you won't be taken seriously.
None of the programs listed are as powerful or have as many features as these two, though Premiere Pro has been coming along nicely and may soon be on the same level as them if only because of its integration/compatibility with other Adobe products like After Effects and Photoshop.
However, if all you want to do is make youtube videos, a more user friendly option like imovie should do the trick just fine. - konataXchan, on 10/12/2008, -7/+13Sony Vegas > any other video program.
For a few simple reasons:
1. It's dog ***** easy to use.
2. Rendering doesn't take a bazillion years/
3. Has option to output to youtube.
4. Cheaper than most video software.
There's more yet I can't think of it. - inactive, on 10/12/2008, -1/+7But FC Express is a good buy for the money.
- BradOFarrell, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6I Movie 6 HD is pretty great. You can get it for free here, even without iLife: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.h ...
It will only let you 'install' it if you have iLife, but you can just right click and 'explore package contents' and look for the application's icon, and drag it into applications.
It's great if you just want to chop some clips together and add music and basic filters. - TheWindBlows, on 10/12/2008, -3/+8Personally I'd like to see more development into KDEnLive its Qt4/KDE4 so it can be ported cross platform.
- sonicularulus, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5it is, but it annoys me when people say their final cut editors and they've only used express and compare themselves with the industry standard FCP.
- stew75, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5How can you compare Premiere Pro to iMovie??? You have to spend $799 for Premiere Pro and iMovie comes FREE with all Macs. They should have mentioned that if you don't want to spend a ton of money you can get Final Cut Express for $300 and still have a powerful video editing program. Stupid article.
- Nenb, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5FCP is overkill, as is Premiere, however, Final Cut Express ($199) ought to be mentioned, it is very competent at its price.
- PabloMac, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6Yeah, a Digg comment thread is a great place for digital video editing tutorials.
- BossKey, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6...they're coming to take me away, to the happy home, where live is beautiful all the time, and I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats 'cause they're coming to take me away, ha ha...!!!

http://www.xkcd.com/378/ - identitymatrix, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6I found Virtualdub, AviSynth and MeGui (all of which are free and open-source) to have everything I needed to go from recorded video clips to a final edited and compressed mp4.
The following website has a lot of useful information on everything from recording, to editing, to compressing video (which could then be uploaded to youtube or wherever). It's focused on speedrun videos but most of it also applies to video editing in general:
http://speeddemosarchive.com/kb/index.php/Main_Pag ... - supermutt, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6No Vegas. I have used Premire, Avid and a few others, but Vegas works best for me. I think it's one of the most overlooked editors out there, I can throw almost any type of source files at it, mix and match and it works like a champ.
I had a free copy of Pinnacle Studio that came with something I bought. It locked up ever few minutes, whereas all the other editors worked smoothly. - thejoker86, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5Burried as lame for no mention of final cut pro....
- potofgravy, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6I don't know about that, the latest versions of final cut and adobe premiere are pretty suave.
- sonicularulus, on 10/12/2008, -3/+8final cut pro and only pro, not that newbie final cut express
- GregFD3S, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4Final Cut Studio FTW!
- edge777, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4This is a TERRIBLE article, why in the world is it getting Dugg up???? Do you people have any clue about video editing software (if not, don't Digg this, that's dumb). BURIED!!!
