- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This is a really BAD article. This isnt a comparison. This is a small summery for each webmail app. How can any one say this is a good article? Are you kidding me? For it to be a COMPARISON ... things need to be COMPARED.
- commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12A little biased:
"Yahoo! has been around forever and so has their free e-mail service. If you’re looking for great SPAM protection and an easy-to-use interface, Yahoo! is a great choice"
"Microsoft’s offering of e-mail is known as Hotmail, and there is a reason why you should avoid it: Hotmail is a mediocre e-mail service that will get the basic job done while doing nothing else."
Hotmail predates Yahoo! Mail (as a site, not as an MS endeavor) as far as I can remember and has always been free. Hotmail has spam filters just like Yahoo! and it's not like any webmail is *difficult* to use. Granted I was none too pleased when MS purchased HoTMaiL but I've kept it for the past 8 years or so and really didn't have any issues once they implemented spam filters and I set them up. Decent review but I just hate when biased opinions come through so clearly.
-commiecat - volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11That is the worst comparison I have ever read. He contradicts himself in almost every comparison. If I was a beginner for webmail I wouldn't even know which one is best because he basically has a lot of good things to say about all of them.
Lets face it - gmail > all - synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hotmail's spam filters are horrible. Like, freaking atrocious.
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7for the average user, is there anything better than gmail?
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8What's your email address? I'll ensure that you get more spam at your hotmail account.
You probably sign up for less things with your hotmail account. GMails filter is one of the best I've seen for webmail. I can guarantee that you not getting SPAM in hotmail is not because of hotmail's filter. - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They have spam filters?
(sarcasm) - tingle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good read for beginners just starting out webmail.
A few errors such as "unlimited storage" for gmail. Etc etc - Roscoe1976, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think in regards to spam, no one is better than the other. You will get more spam at whatever mail program you use the most. And if you even think about using one for when you sign up to your pr0n site, you can kiss that account goodbye anyways cause there is no stopping the spam!
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Probably not.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3clear: both!
- lb3ll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh darn millionaires24 isnt covered. I was considering getting that and wanted to see how it stacked up.
- edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where's the [comprehensive] review of various webmail clients you can install and host yourself?
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I'm self-promoting, but it's on topic and not going to create any financial gain for myself.
Just thought someone may find it useful. - brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I hate Hotmail. It's bloated, slow, and just generally overblown on interface but with an ironic lack of flexibility. I use Yahoo mail. Never had a problem in the 6-ish years I've had it. Nice an snappy (no loading several pictures of each friggin button), flexible, and just all around cleaner. Oh, and I get maybe 1 piece of spam that makes it through Y!'s filters every couple months. Simply the best, IMO.
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not an error. As far as almost all users are concerned, Gmail has unlimited storage.
- Ranferi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I couldn't have said it better my self, buddy :)
- masterren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another one that does away with passwords is http://www.mailinator.com/
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want more than simple summeries... Something like a table that says which features each one has. Or use cases and which one is best for those uses. And writing things out is a horrable way to compare things. Yes its comparing, but its still a horrable horrable way to represent data.
- Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Ok, this is lame.
This is a brief description of a couple of web mail offers out there, nothing else. I don't see a comparison. There is little explanation into the differences or similarities of yahoo and gmail for one. Not only that, the guy gets a couple facts wrong - and states opinions at that. Having a hotmail account, just sitting there, usually will not get you spam. Try it. He is right about hotmail in general though, it is pretty aweful. Also, gmail does not offer "unlimited" storage, I understand why he thinks it's unlimited, but if he is writing an objective review, he shouldn't just add some kind bias to his review.
Another thing that I found annoying - he picks a few things from each service to talk about, but does not compare each thing from each service to each other. An example: So and so's interface is clean and ad free while so and so's interface isn't. I don't think he even talks about yahoo's here. - rodball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Speaking off MyTrashMail, he should have included dodgeit.com. I have signed up for a lot of stuff with dodgeit.
I know, he can't include everything. - mydiggname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That wasn't helpful or informative.
Is there a decent free service that allows Thunderbird (or other client) to access it via POP? I would really like to use my own local mail program, rather than a web based one, but haven't found anything suitable. - Ranferi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, I was going to point out the "unlimited storage" thing. Well, Gmail "almost" give us unlimited storage. They rock!
- rishubhav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also POP3 integration which Gmail gives FREE. Who needs a spam filter when you can do it through thunderbird?
- shness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"why do people continue to compare all the different email services
theres been enuff of these and everyone knows that gmail owns all ..."
Other than the grammar and punctuation problems, do you see what is wrong with your statement? - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article is too superficial, I think. It should go deeper into each e-mail provider, and post some features, not just the storage space and spam protection.
I am not sure about gmail, but Yahoo seems to be the most reliable service ever. I am using my yahoo account for more than 5 years now, and it has rarely been down, and when it had it was only for a few minutes, 1 hour at the most.
I like it so much that I am paying 20 USD/year to have the Plus service, which is great (2GB of space, no ads, more configurabl, etc.)
And yes, I know that gmail also offers 2GB, for free, but I'd rather go with yahoo. - Hyponerdia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Overall very useful information and it sure beats having to hunt around the internet trying to figure it out on your own.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not really, I started to pay for my Yahoo account in 2003, and I don't think that $20/year is that much for the service they offer.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6This article is completely wrong when it comes to Hotmail. While my Gmail account, which I use only for Fark, is constantly getting spam, my hotmail account, which I've had forever and used god knows where, receives no spam at all. It also has a fast interface, especially the new Live Mail. I suspect this article was written by one of those typical holier than thou pseudo-geeks who likes to write scathing reviews of anything associated with Microsoft while simultaneously fellating anything else that comes along. Wake me up when something is posted on a webpage that isn't so suspiciously skewed in its writing.
- Ranferi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12713 MB of space, and counting....
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1www.30gigs.com is a run by a scam artist. Google up 30 gigs scam and avoid them like the plauge. If you have any email with them right now, delete it right away.
- Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Mail.com is *****, especially the free version. What a lame article.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What a horrible article. Looks like the writer is excited for the weekend, hey who could blame him?
First, there weren't any things compared. I don't see charts, graphs, or proof that anything was compared. This are descriptions of each service, but doesn't even go into detail that it could go into.
Second, ok it was a little bias, and we don't see very much articles without bias.
Third, in Gmail's description , "There is unlimited storage..." Oh come on. 2,7xx is not unlimited storage is it. If you had a hard drive that was the size of Gmail's current size (and doesn't increase), you can't possibly consider that unlimited. It is very hard to fill up 2.7 GB in Emails, but some people actually can. - haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would say that Jetable is probably the best for creating disposable e-mail address.
http://www.jetable.org/en/index - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The pay version has pop3 access, I can send and receive from/to multiple email addresses, I get throwaway addresses, 20mb attachment capability, and I'm sure I'm missing some other features."
Gmail has all of these except for the throwaway email addresses. Although with 100 invites, you can pretty much make gmail accounts and throw them away when you're done with them. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had gmail for quite a while now and sign up for pretty much everything with it, and I've gotten less than 10 spam emails in my inbox. Compared to a few hundred in the spam folder (which are all actually spam) every week, that's pretty good.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I guess the Digg comments are delivering the spam that my email provider doesn't...
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gmail's storage allotment is constantly increasing. You could argue that it keeps pace with an average user's incoming mail.
- UnderLoK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think the article is nearly detailed enough considering how long these systems have been around. As I'm sure most people know, the cool features are the ones that don't appear on the help pages.
btw, sup Mega if your seeing this! Go ArsTechnica! ;) - nocode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. Unfortunately for me, at the time, I was using hotmail when I signed up for my ebay/paypal accounts in which it is now a pain in the ass to switch the emails. I'll get to it someday...
- mydiggname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone explain to me why everyone thinks Google is so great?...Personally I find yahoo queries much more accurate as far as searches go, but I really wonder why people are so taken with Google. Who the heck really runs google?......they seem like they want into every part of a users life.......there info when you sign up..ability to read your mail (read the "agreement")....desktop search ability...mapping where there users are....seems very Orwellian to me.....and VERY big brother-esque. What is there relationship with the government (if any)? Kinda spooky. For the time being I'll stick with yahoo unless someone actually has a better recommendation and a good reason for it. Yahoo is plenty big, so I don't see Gmail's "unlimited" storage as a benefit.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Technically, while the storage is not unlimited, it grows daily, so if you wait long enough, you can have extra space.
- algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry but this is not a good article. Especially with errors like Gmail being unlimited storage,,, Since when? Where are the comparisons?
- Trenton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Awesome, I agree! Now I have a list to give to newbies that come to the internet and ask what they should use for email. I do have to say that gmail is my personal favorite. It is great, and does what I need it to.
Great list of 10 email services. Very useful. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tapezor: No, I don't get it either. A friend of mine pays $20 for his Yahoo account, and he doesn't have anything that I don't get from other services for free either. Don't ask me why, Yahoo people just aren't willing to change. It makes no sense, since Yahoo is, at best, only on par with dozens of other toally free offerings.
- kramer3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1just use gmail
wow didnt need an article for that. no digg - vjz666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am surprised about the number of complaints about Hotmail's spam filter. In fact, I get the much lesser spam on my Hotmail than Yahoo.
But the biggest problem with Hotmail: the search. You can only search the sender and subject, not the body of the email. Are you freakin' kiddin' me? - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you know you're not wanted when you ask for someones email address and they say its trashmail. I can see this email address getting free advertising in romantic-comedy movies.
- Duffeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have hotmail, but got Gmail upon positive recommendations. I love it, Gmail is a million times better thatn hotmail!!
- cochise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, gmail is good though I use Yahoo and pay $20/year. I use the beta version of Yahoo mail and it's completely different than the old non-ajax version. The pay version has pop3 access, I can send and receive from/to multiple email addresses, I get throwaway addresses, 20mb attachment capability, and I'm sure I'm missing some other features.
I think gmail has good features, but I can't say it's clearly better than Yahoo--obviously, as I've used both and I pay $20/year.
