- estacado, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Who said anything about buying?
- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Let's review:
Windows XP Home OEM on NewEgg: $89.99
Windows Vista Home Premium OEM on NewEgg: $119.99
Too expensive? Bullocks. It's $30 more, which is nothing compared to everything that comes with it (iLife-style apps, better security, smart caching, aero, etc). - wonderchemist, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16$30 more in software, how much more in hardware?
- Hellman109, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How much do you spend on a car and maintenence in comparison to the origional cost price?
Your logic there is completly flawed.
The article is a piece of ***** anyhow, Windows flaws and apache flaws are comparing chalk and cheese for a start, ones an entire operating system the other is an application.
Next: OSX has more security flaws then a ceramic plate. ZOMG - TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like how some people claim Vista is merely a cosmetic make over, but others complain that we have to start from scratch learning everything again.
Besides, I don't think that Ubuntu or any other Linux would be an easier transition than Vista. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Over the next few weeks, NBA star LeBron James will try to convince you to move to Windows Vista as part of Microsoft's massive ad campaign."
Lebron, stick to basketball. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been using Vista since RC2 and I can testify that Vista is a grand improvement to XP is terms of usability and attractiveness.
"if it ain't broke dont fix it"
They didn't fix it. They Replaced the Engine and gave it a sexy new leather interior, sound system and as bitchin' paint job. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Just pay for your ***** software. It's about a quarter/half of a student's paycheck. (Thats Minimum wage in California payed bi-weekly for 20 hours a week.)
- dw2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a matter of fact yes I have tried playing games on Vista - Age of Empires III - Warchiefs Expansion works great as does SWAT 4, WarCraft III, and NeverWinter Nights 2.
Sure they're a little faster on XP, but I'm not the kind of person that can notice the difference between 86.6fps (XP) and 83.0fps (Vista). It's also worth noting that no new Windows release has been able to offer more application or game performance than its predecessor.
I agree with you that not everyone should upgrade, but definatly if your buying a new PC with windows than Vista is the way to go... and none of that home basic crap either - mehip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You should try using the software before you make comments. You do not have to completely re-learn the OS. A few things are different but not too hard. That being said, I am no fan of vista.
- mehip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am developer and have had access to Vista for several months now. I don't think it sucks as bad as most people seem to think but, I don't think it is worth an upgrade. I've had Vista Ultimate sitting on a spare drive on my system and only boot into it when I need to test to see if an app will compile or run on Vista.
To be fair Vista has added a lot of very nice little things to windows that probably should have been there before. And, I do run a fairly high end system and I have found Vista to be snappier in general compared to XP on the same system. But, a lot of my current windows software doesn't run or doesn't run well. For example MaxiVista (http://www.maxivista.com/) "works" under Vista but only using a specific set of drivers. I've also found that some games like Oblivion don't run too well with the same hardware. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A computer can run XP with only 256 MB of Ram and integrated graphics and a 1GHz Celeron just fine and speedy, it will choke on vista unless you run it with all the eye candy turned off on low resolution. (My secondary laptop)
Then a computer that makes the minimum requirements for Vista will choke and stutter on the eye candy, but can run fine with some of the fancy stuff turned off. This computer (my primary laptop) is still better suited for XP but unless you plan on gaming on it then you may as well want to put Vista on it. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Please explain why I need to relearn Windows when the interface is almost exactly the same as it's been since 1995?
- dw2005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This article is almost a month old and a lot of what the guy is saying is completely in-accurate
'Wait for SP1' - I don't know why everyone seems to say this but I think it's a stupid excuse. Vista is about as stable as Windows XP with SP1 was.(probably more so)
"Some PC vendors, such as Alienware and Polywell, are aggressively pushing XP over Vista, because both say graphics and other drivers for Vista aren't quite ready for prime time. "
The front page of the alienware site has vista written all over it as well as "Alienware recommends Windows Vista™ Ultimate." and forgive my ignorance but I have no idea who Polywell is.
Sure some manufacturers are behind on their driver writing but the Vista DVD has arround 19,500 drivers and there are another 11,000+ on Windows Update. Additionally both ATi and nVidia have WHQL Vista drivers available now.
I stopped reading after that. - superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1bah, critical tasks get moved and/or renamed in windows so often it makes me want to pull my hair out....
about the article: Early adopters will adopt early, the rest of us will wait and have a smoother transition...
SSDD - mehip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Have you actually tried to play games or even run vista? I have and it's performance is not near the same. All in all, I think if it ships with a system you should be fine, but I am recommending to all my friends and family not to pay for an upgrade. I just don't see the value.
- nevesis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not "any computer made in the past two years" will run Aero. Integrated video will run Aero well. That automatically disqualifies 90% of notebooks and roughly 60% of desktops currently in use. (Just because we're geeks and have high end cards doesn't mean anyone else does. The majority of business PCs as well as most every budget PC (which have huge market shares) use integrated graphics.) Intel is making some progress on this though.
Security is upgraded, but is easily bypassed. It's a step in the right direction, but it won't solve everything. IE7 does run in a sandbox in Vista though, which is awesome. (and obvious..Sun figured this out with Java applets in the early 90s.)
There are driver issues, of course.. but these should be quickly resolved. (*ahem* NVIDIA *ahem*)
DX10 is pretty awesome, but we won't see it utilized for a while.
In a nutshell: wait till SP2. (For what it's worth.. I said the same about XP to W2K users.) - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4@ wonder
What you're implying is that all computers made today run on 256 MB of ram and integrated video with obscure hardware?
Almost all computers made today run Vista with Aero with no problems.
*Edit Sorry for the edit but for some reason the second paragraph got cut out* - fLUx1337, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2People - the chances are, you DONT need new hardware!
Anything which will run XP like crap......will run Vista like crap!
Anything which will run XP decently......will run Vista decently!
Anything which will run XP super fast....will run Vista super fast!
OK, maybe you may need some more disc space - but WAY less than 10GB extra, and if you aint got that, then you should stick with XP! lol
Min specs-
Decent CPU
512mb RAM
20GB+ Hard drive
OK-ish graphics card
Basicly - anything brought in the last 3 yrs!!!!
You either buy Vista now, or in 2 yrs time.....but whats the point waiting? Its just 2 yrs more time with crappy XP!

- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2hmm maybe because theres so many bugs in new operating systems. Betas are for smart people who want to test and first releases are for end-user's crash courses. 6 months it might be worth it to buy an OEM version. But now, i love XP and my good ol DX9c
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Vista is running pretty damn good on my 3-4 year old system, with the only hiccup being Vista doesn't support my even older SoundBlaster Live! card.
If you’re bothering to building a computer today, chances are it’ll run Vista without issue. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"$30 more in software, how much more in hardware?"
Wow any machine made within the last two years will run Vista. All you fanboys need to just go orgy elsewhere. - Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4if it aint broke dont fix it..... besides spending over $100 bucks to use a computer you might have paid $300 for is silly....
- sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1With Windows Vista as the default operating system on any new PC you buy, it makes sense to consider moving to Ubuntu/Debian/Macisn'ttheonlyalternativetowindows. After all, Vista will force you to learn a new operating system anyway!
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2that's the OEM, not the retail version
