- blanski, on 10/12/2007, -18/+81I think their beta testers outnumber Apple OS users...
- darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -9/+58... and then Duke Nukem Forever the month after that.
- xlii, on 10/12/2007, -11/+41Well, it would be quite weird if it would got even worse after so much delay, wouldn't it?
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -34/+59"Testers of Microsoft's latest operating system say the next build, which they're betting will hit this week, better be good."
It better be, cause I've a funny feeling that Apple's OS Leopard that is due to preview in August will wipe the floor with Windows Vista! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+35microsoft will release it and then patch it a couple of months later.... search your feelings, you know it to be true~!!~
- dagr8tim, on 10/12/2007, -17/+33With what was left on the cutting room floor, Vista is more like an advanced version of XP SP3 than a seperate OS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+27Vista doesn't have a "make or break" moment. Vista is a success, whether it comes out this year or next. Whether you like it or not. Whether Apple releases another OS first, or umpteen linux distros put new versions out.
- Enendar, on 10/12/2007, -14/+26It may be "cool" to bash Microsoft, but people have a reason. All the eye candy that Microsoft is putting into Vista is already on OS X and Linux with less hardware requirements. Also many of the great features that many people were looking forward to have been cut out. It really does seem to be just a bloated version of XP.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21> I think their beta testers outnumber Apple OS users...
And amazingly, that's still not enough people to get all the bugs out before release. - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16From the article: "As is true on a variety of Vista fronts, especially security and systems management, Microsoft has tuned the product users not administrators. And power users are none too happy about that."
Tuned the product users? I thought brainwashing was illegal - or is this just another case of Microsoft being above the law? - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17zyang,
Way to prove you don't know what you're talking about. - hookid, on 10/12/2007, -15/+25since os x is already where vista is now, leopard will whoop the ***** out of vista i think
- SuperCujo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Recovered from way down below...

18.64 bit CPU support - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21How cool an OS looks is hardly what makes it popular.
What makes an OS popular is how stable it is, how much hardware it supports, and, finally, how many applications are available for it.
I am sure that WinXP is the best OS out there (considering the above mentioned factors). While not pretty, it has the broadest hardware support, it is relatively stable, and can run more applications than all the other OSes combined can. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10birch25, Linux itself is extremely stable. Problems arise when the user doesn't know what they're doing; Linux doesn't tend to be horribly forgiving. I'm reluctant to call your roommate a noob, but... your roommate's a noob.
- zionKing, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I personally use OSX and love it, however rather than sit back and laugh while Vista chokes on itself, I am really hoping Vista will get it together and allow its adopters major productivity gains over XP. It is common knowledge that majority of corporations all over the world rely on MS products to get important things done -- quickly and securely. If Vista dampers productivity or jeopardizes security, then, multiplied by the large user base, that's an appreciable productivity loss worldwide.
The OS war isn't the same fight as the gaming console war: we depend on OSs to save energy, lives, and money. If Vista sucks... if its users (of which they are many) can't depend on Vista... then in some small way we are all getting screwed. And getting screwed, I think you'll agree, isn't something to laugh at. At least I'm not laughing.... *****'s too expensive already. - jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6MS have already said Vista will not support EFI.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It better be EFI compatible and not cost me 1,500 dollas to get a new PC to actually run it. I am a sucker for GUI but when it hogs my system's resources, no way man, I'll use a Mac look great and won't slow down my computer to the point where a snail could beat it in a race.
- zionKing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Yep. WinFS should be done a few months later."
They have some bigger cod to fry: "Vista networking is a sore spot with a number of Microsoft's hardcore testers, not just Wardell. As is true on a variety of Vista fronts, especially security and systems management, Microsoft has tuned the product users not administrators. And power users are none too happy about that."
Just thinking intuitively (as opposed to knowledgeably), I am guessing that integrating WinFS will take longer than "a few months" if it's released at all. I could be wrong, but isn't it relatively hard to plug n' play a file system into an operating system, especially something as complex as Windows. That said, I am more than eager to see what reactions will be to Vista 1.0. - tech10171968, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I still haven't seen a reason for people to switch to Vista as of yet (especially when XP is doing just fine). I don't want to sound as if I'm bashing Microsoft (because that's been done to death), and I DO NOT HATE WINDOWS, but I think the real question is "what can I do with Vista that I can't do with XP, or Linux, or even OSX for that matter". The fact that no one has yet given a convincing answer is the reason I'm still using Linux. All I really need is a _valid_ reason to buy.
This is the very same reason some offices/homes are still using Win98SE, for example. As long as it keeps doing what they want it to do then there is no incentive to switch. - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You're not funny.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10
With what was left on the cutting room floor, Vista is more like an advanced version of XP SP3 than a seperate OS.
Have you seen Brad Wardell's Vista preview? I tried adding it to Digg, but it seems it was deleted. Maybe because in the title I wrote "Vista is the worst Windows EVER," which may have been a little too much for Digg. Read the article and you'll see what a terrible state Vista is in.
http://www.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?AID=117896
So what should we expect from the upcoming beta? It's not going to be significantly different. Vista needs about a year's more work before being suitable for release. Read the article! - chadu, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18how can a neutered OS devoid of any real innovation be considered a success after so long? just cuz it got out of the door?
c'mon. - digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Testers of Microsoft's latest operating system say the next build, which they're betting will hit this week, better be good"
Or else what, they're not going to test it any more? - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10
Vista will be amazing when it comes out, too bad its so cool to bash Microsoft, since when this software comes out even if its awesome will be talked down.
I don't bash MS becuase it's cool. I bash MS because their software sucks. Don't believe me? I'll bash some other suck-ass companies too if you want? How about Symantec? Or maybe Sony? What do you think of Halliburton? I know... Exxon! AT&T?
Lots of sucky companies doing evil out there, and MS is one of them. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Only way I am even going to try Vista is if I can DL it from the MSDN."
...or Teh Pirate Bay! ;-) - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5as long as its preinstalled, their monopoly is safe.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16All OSes are judged by the same standard, including Linux.
Linux, for example, is not more stable than Windows XP. A bad driver can crash both Linux and Windows. They both look good, but Linux is less user friendly, doesn't have that much ahrdware support, and it has fewer good quality applications than Windows. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17Yep. WinFS should be done a few months later.
- 0x00, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Fanboys? Ha. I've seen far many more people that hate Windows/Microsoft with a passion.
It will, however, succeed because it will be preinstalled on many desktop machines, have continued developer support, and be the biggest platform for games. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -2/+8Everyone forgot about how badly HL-2 was delayed before it came out. Then it did (still with many issues) and everyone was all over it. To those who keep whinging about it being delayed, what's wrong with your current OS? Just wait for it to come out or switch to an Open Source distribution that gets updated frequently..
Personally I'm excited for Vista, but Windows XP is doing a great job at the moment. - KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17Because millions of mindless Microsoft Windows Butt Monkey Lemming Fan Dorks will buy copies of it blindly.
Sad but true! - skatingrox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm dual booting between SuSE x64 and WinXP at the moment. SuSE is fun to use, but for my apps i need WinXP. And yes, i did try Wine.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Well so far the only cool thing I've actually seen it do is the "sliding window" thing, I really really really hope they get rid of the alert pop ups that come up every 5 seconds in this build...
- chadu, on 10/12/2007, -27/+32whatever your drinking or smoking, i'll take one!
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13You call 95% of the market "Butt Monkey Lemming Fan Dorks" and then you wonder why we think Mac users are a bunch of pretentious pricks? I guarantee you are not as smart as you think you are.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I've been playing around with the latest beta, and honestly Vista feels like it's going to be this generation's Windows Millennium. Yeah, I realize that most of the improvements are "under the hood", but I find most of the cosmetic eye candy (Aero, 3D panels, transparency, sidebar, PC game menus) to be distracting rather than useful. Even if you have a powerful system, turning on all this stuff slows things down, albeit slightly, because it does take a second or so (or milliseconds, I'll give) to animate this cruft. I confess that I don't even have the animated effects option on on my XP system, and I use the Classic theme -- I know I'm not in the minority either.
Really, I could see most people skipping Vista altogether, just as they did with Windows Millennium back when 98SE was pretty much perfect. I bet this is what Microsoft fears most, that Vista is about to become a sequel to Millennium. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9So nice of Mr. Ballmer to drop in on this discussion, but:
In your dreams, monkey-boy!
-jcr - bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10it's funny how OSs outside of linux are judged by how they look and feel.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4RSCcruiser, Will upgrading RAM make my proccessor x amounts of MHz/GHz faster, make my GPU faster/expand its memory, allow more memory bandwith on my motherboard and will it be Vista ready? exactly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@ chadu - because it just doesn't matter. What Apple and Linux do is overall, irrelevant to the desktop market.
As for innovatino, nobody really innovates with software anymore, they just expand on existing concepts.
@ killerx - you're right. In a day, there'll be more Vista desktops than Linux. Within a week, there'll be more than Apple. That doesn't make windows users the crap you describe them as, it just emphasises how irrelevant the alternatives are.
@ 0x00 - unless you've spoken to 100's of millions of people, the ones you have spoken to are irrelevant.
Being preinstalled is also a moot point, plenty of people (8 or 9 digits) will upgrade. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think he's saying he makes alot of $$$ off of fixing problems with MS's software, but even he is getting sick of it?
- exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6*ahem*
developers, developers developers developers......
DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DELEVOPERS....
- fin - - cybershoplifter, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12broad-scale build of Vista is exciting..I would love to play with it on a 2nd PC OR laptop.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i tried vista also i have a AMD 64 bit and a Geforce 6600, i thought it looked pretty hot, but it wouldnt connect to the internet and it was not lovein me trying to get the links from XP startbar onto the vista one.
The boot thing that it does is very annoying for duel booters and may stop you from duel booting lunix - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5When i tried vista, half my stuff (like hp printer etc) no drivers, i guess no rush to use an os that has no drivers or support, same with win xp pro 64 bit
- xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This dude is a spammer trying to promote his warez site..saw that same comment on the DS Lite thread...
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well I run a linux server and have tried to use it on desktop but it just isnt practicle - I play game and prefer photoshop over GIMP. Also wine/other emulators are not seamless at ALL, they only work with some programs, you get errors and most games have graphical issues or dont boot at all under emulation. Until linux gets more developer support I cannot recommend that anybody "make the switch".
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16No Vista won't be "amazing" when it comes out. From the sounds of it I will be amazed if it is even useable.
- dwainetrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Seriously, Microsoft should just drop Vista and focus on Office. The ribbon works! In beta tests my productivity has increased 100% since I'm not having to look through drop down lists just to accomplish some paragraph formatting. Foldershare isn't bad either, for P2P with a select group of individuals there's nothing better. Microsoft should concentrate on making their great products work on Linux or OSX. There's no money in OS's anymore anyway. (Well, I can dream can't I...)
