- quokkapox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9How is this different from all the OEM ads and preinstalled trialware clutter that appears on every new Dell/HP/etc.?
- chimona, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10all you mac users can't say *****. last time i booted a mac it asked me if i wanted to buy iLife 06. sounds like an ad to me.
the only thing that separates apple from microsoft is market share. Microsoft got in trouble for including a web browser with their operating system, but everyone loves apple for packing video editing, photo editing, music creation, and all that other ***** with their OS.
I don't have a problem with macs, their intuititive, simple, and effective. I just hate it when apple fanboys think that apple has an ethical advantage over microsoft. everyone is in the game for the same reason, money. - FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6masturbatory fodder for Macophiles
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This welcome screen only shows on the first boot of new installs. It recommends an antivirus, and other similar utilities. That's it.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ Gurk: Yes. Nothing to do with it.
From the link: "Plaintiffs have received a complaint regarding the ability of OEM's to customize the first-boot experience in Vista, and in particular concerning the Welcome Center, a new interface that presents the user with various setup options and commercial offers (presented by Microsoft and OEMs) at the end of the initial out-of-the-box experience."
The Article makes it look like every single time you boot Vista, ads are shown. That is 100% Veritae, total *****. This welcome screen only shows on the first boot of new installs. It recommends an antivirus, and other similar utilities. OEMs can customise it as they want. That's it. - c00ldude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OP here..
Nope certainly not a rumor. Here is the quote from the DoJ filing:
Plaintiffs have received a complaint regarding the ability of OEM's to customize the first-boot experience in Vista, and in particular concerning the Welcome Center, a new interface that presents the user with various setup options and commercial offers (presented by Microsoft and OEMs) at the end of the initial out-of-the-box experience.
Here's the whole thing, for the legal-minded diggers:
http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f214500/214518.htm - heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No different than Apple displaying ads on the OSX server I administer for its Quicktime services and media.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4someone is full of crap.
EVERYONE: Mark this story as inaccurate. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This welcome screen only shows on the first boot of new installs. It recommends an antivirus, and other similar utilities. OEMs can customise it as they want. That's it.
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah I call shenanigans on this as well.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2100% BS. Marked inaccurate; pure speculation. I have used all beta releases of Vista. There are no ads, and Microsoft has said nothing of this. They would be ***** insane to do this. As much as you hate Microsoft, you can't honestly believe this.
- noghead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with silentbobsc, I getting anoyed by all the ignorant people on digg, I now find my self visiting this less and less. Im a big fan of screensavers and Kevin Rose, so I was an early adapter to digg but...i hate what this site is becoming.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't buy it at all. Even Microsoft wouldn't do something this tacky.
- modifiy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I could only see this as true in that rumored "free" version of vista they they were maybe going to make. If thats the case you get what you pay for. It wont be in the payed versions.
- tazamore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps the Vista install may have ads but the start up screen? I'll believe it when I see it (and tweak the registry to remove it)
- kola_kidd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what the, this is major bull *****
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple has "first boot ads". It's called trying over and over to get you to sign up for .Mac. I can't view the site since it's down, but if these "ads" are something along the lines of "We here at MS think it's a great idea for you to sign up for OneCare. Blah blah blah" then it's absolutely no different from Mac's setup procedure.
- petknep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Eh, stupid. How could 200+ digg'rs be so gullible?
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BOOOOOOOOOO!!!! i think its *****.
- zarkkan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was the article that finally got me to register. I've been pretty content to sit here and just read stuff and think about what a bunch of dumb asses people are these days. I realize that dig is fanboy central and that people are going to get crazy with some of the stuff, but this website will be useless to me and pretty much everyone else if we don’t stop this unsubstantiated blog rumor *****. The entire article is wrong, people have pointed out that it’s wrong, and ***** keep digging it because it’s about how Microsoft is evil. Regardless of if it is true or not.
Fanboy’s please stop before you complete ruin Digg. It’s closer than you think. If you are going to comment on something at least try to add to the discussion, don’t just say
“M$ sux” or Linux rulez or whatever stupid ***** the 12 years olds are spewing these days. And if you are going to Digg a story how about at least reading it and making sure it’s right.
Digg is a great concept and has a chance to be a really great place for people exchange ideas and learn some new stuff, but its a few more bad articles away from being a ***** where fanboys spew crap back and forth and nothing useful gets posted. Pretty soon there won’t be anyone left to read it.
Save Digg. - boohoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so, we all agree this is *****, but 250+ apple-idiots digg it anyway.
haters! - Siljmonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Yeah, I really doubt this, this is just like all the PS3 rumors... They cannot be proven or disproven, therefore, they're worthless."
Thank you man!
I am tired of it too. But I highly doubt this will happen. Since that is labeled as adware. - zarkkan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I rest my case.
- The_Ox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If true, I'm shocked! Even as a mac user!
- KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does this country have anti-trust? Government is suppose to GOVERN not dictate business.
Let MS do what it wants. If the consumer is not happy. Then MS will lose $$ and things will work themselves out.
THE INVISIBLE HAND BIYATCH - ADAM SMITH - Adrants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digitalsin, the fact that Vista isn't out yet is irrelevant. Plenty of companies make product announcement well in advance of release. While linking and commenting on a story about this, our 20 years experience in advertising tells us this is entirely conceivable. You diggers can kick the ***** out of this but that won't change the fact that Microsoft is a for-profit company that, while it gives polite lip service to Apple, won't stop until it owns every desktop and ever screen in the world. Following Microsoft's antitrust suit, the government is watching Microsoft very closely. While these ads may only appear once, it doesn't take away from the power that puts in tha hands of one company. Call the story ***** but it's a worthy discussion.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1noghead and zarkkan, I agree totally. And the amazing thing is, no-one has even read my various comments here, (there must be about 20) and responded to them. It's just an endless stream of 'z0mg' and 'M$'. I'm sick of this, so this is the last time i'll say it.
This welcome screen only shows on the FIRST BOOT OF NEW PC. It recommends an antivirus, and other similar utilities. OEMs can customise it as they want. That's it.
Digg the truth here:
http://digg.com/software/Vista_Welcome_center_will_display_ads_on_first_run. - Meow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do you all think this story is fake?
http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US&q=%22welcome+center%22 - AuLKenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is FLAT OUT *****... the only time you ever see ads is the FIRST TIME and THAT TIME ONLY that windows vista loads up, it will show whatever the OEM vendor wishes and will include things like an anti-virus logo, the company logo, and software included.. etc, etc. misleading title indeed.
- mcnasby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article is a prime example of people not understanding digg. This story was absolute garbage. How can you digg an unsupported story written by a source whose credibility is unknown. No Digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The summary is wrong. This isn't the bootup screen, this is the Welcome Center that displays after you've booted.
No less sleazy, of course. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It's still bad to spam people with ads right on their first bootup. Then again, this is the same company that auto-forced Messenger on EVERY BOOTUP, didn't let you disable it, and didn't let you uninstall it."
Yes, but the article is still 100% WRONG and is misleading a tonne of people. The Article makes it look like every single time you boot Vista, ads are shown. That is *****. This welcome screen only shows on the first boot of new installs. It recommends an antivirus, and other similar utilities. OEMs can customise it as they want. That's it. It's not the same as showing random ads for profit on every boot. - geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I, for one, welcome our new ad-displaying welcome screen overlords.
- macbirdie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Welcome Center shows up only after the first boot of a fresh Vista install, not on every boot. Marked as Inaccurate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Any slightly educated moron can point out that this is complete *****.
- Adrants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am the "moron who didn't understand what softpedia wrote." I apologize if I misunderstood the original Softpedia article but I did, as I always do, provide a link to the story so those who aren't morons could see the source of my story. I apologize if I misled anyone. I didn't mean to and I've corrected my story. I thought Digg was supposed to be a place to democratically rank stories based on importance and relevance and not a place to hurl accusations and get all nasty on someone's ass. Apparently I was wrong.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"all you mac users can't say *****. last time i booted a mac it asked me if i wanted to buy iLife 06. sounds like an ad to me."
100% lie. It only asks you one time when you load up iLife '05, and that's because iLife '05 is set to check for updates when you start any of the apps.
It doesn't surprise me at all that Microsoft is trying to reintroduce Active Desktop from Windows 98 and spam users with ads. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep. That's why it's no big deal, and why i'm busy spamming morons who respond with "z0mg I would never buy this" with:
This welcome screen only shows on the first boot of new installs. It recommends an antivirus, and other similar utilities. OEMs can customise it as they want. That's it. - TransmitThis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I can say is that there wont be any Adds on my copy of Vista!
:) - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0(that was @ gotamd) ;P
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@theone3
Oh yeah. I totally understand. :-D I was just trying to point out that this is not really a new concept, just Microsoft is making it easier for the Dells and Gateways out there to customize in a way they always have. I'm sure even Borg edition will make use of this. :-D
Peace, Mate! - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BS
And even if they do it will be OEM ONLY! I for one will be buying Windows Vista retail and Ultimate Edition. - Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well whatever. That would get hacked anyway in, like, two days?
- a1programmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Games do this a lot. Yes, Age of empires 3 has the "Runs better on a Pentium" crap at the beginning.
I know one thing though.. My version of vista will not have ads. :D - Specks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if it was true. I'll be damned if they do something like this on MY computer on software that I paid for. If they want to show ads while MY computer is booting they better PAY ME to use it.
- digggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I aggree with the person who said "You get what you paid for"
- nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well... screw you too, Vista.
- tboutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I call BS on this but if it is true then theres always SuSE
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I for one believe this to be a possibility. Or maybe I just want it to be, so I can laugh at all the Windows users and convert them over to Linux. Hahaha
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahem...
This welcome screen only shows on the first boot of new installs. It recommends an antivirus, and other similar utilities. OEMs can customise it as they want. That's it. -
