- LilBoyLuver, on 03/19/2008, -13/+380How was this story submitted 6 hours ago but has not made it to the front page yet while a story about Apple releasing a draft n router makes it to the front page in 20 minutes?
- rawrzzz, on 03/19/2008, -13/+261Anything related to Apple, including the fruit, automatically makes apple fanboys everywhere cum over their keyboards.
- kiiwii, on 03/19/2008, -3/+150Successfully installed, and so far so good.
One thing I tested out that I'm happy with: Copying files doesn't take forever now! - kiiwii, on 03/19/2008, -13/+151Looking forward to putting this on my wife's laptop, I've held off on installing the betas and release candidates.
Hopefully it improves performance, I don't hate Vista like most do but would appreciate some performance upgrades. - doshindude, on 03/19/2008, -5/+111damn. thought we were done with you.
- zomgorly, on 03/19/2008, -5/+95It works
- toxicityj, on 03/19/2008, -5/+92if you can't make a $2k computer function out of the box beyond email, then you don't belong anywhere near a computer.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -6/+93C'mon, you know Apple fanboys don't have jobs and can digg up the first story that mentions "Apple" or "Steve Jobs" in a heartbeat!
- kiiwii, on 03/19/2008, -10/+88I was about to digg you, until I saw that you liked Windows ME.
- krystalo, on 03/19/2008, -5/+77Poor Engadget with it's 100 word articles. Here's some more information for people who want more information:

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1278 - slor90210, on 03/19/2008, -23/+93Bloat huh? Yep, double standards are so great -- OS X 10.4 installs garageband and idvd by default and actually requires 2 friggin DVDs. Not to mention a solid 40 meg quicktime or itunes update every other week.
- troye, on 03/19/2008, -4/+58Vista SP1 RTM gives a MASSIVE performance boost.
I play Counter Strike and I use to play at 800x600 with ~30fps. Now, I play at 1024x768 at 45fps average.
File copy times are reminicent of XP SP2. Hard drive stuff seems to go faster. For example, defragging is blazing since I can just hear the hard drive sputter it's little heart out on my laptop.
There is one minor flaw. Hibernating is kind of slower compared to regular vista. Overall, SP1 RTM is a huge improvement.
Now I actually think I got what I paid for.
Oh yeah, System Info now reports the proper amount of installed RAM on 32bit systems. - AndrewDB, on 03/19/2008, -19/+73Ok, Engadget ***** sucks. It's nothing but a bunch of blog spam. Why the ***** didn't they link to the download link?!
- OrangeSoda31, on 03/19/2008, -3/+43"SP1 reduces the number of UAC (User Account Control) prompts from 4 to 1 when creating or renaming a folder at a protected location." There are no words to express how I feel.

It might be time to brush up on those math skills ;) - crazlunatic, on 03/19/2008, -8/+45Guys DO NOT download the standalone since it'll take forever. Rather I suggest you get it from the built-in Windows Update on your Vista. If you don't want to read that long list and just want a basic version of the most important updates, I've got a great link:

- zomgorly, on 03/19/2008, -16/+51Oh god, I'm installing it now, i will post if things go well.
- solidus636, on 03/19/2008, -5/+39Wow, just finished installing it and I must say...Microsoft has done a GREAT job!
I just copied a 700 mb movie file in 15 seconds! - mixxster, on 03/19/2008, -9/+42SP1 actually seems to have solved 2 long standing BSOD issues I've been having for a while now. I'm actually satisfied. Thats not to say there isn't room for further improvement in Vista, I'm just saying I can actually use the OS now without fearing a crash.
- ethamajin, on 03/19/2008, -1/+32why is it that when there are dozens of articles on the same topic, the engadget ones always make the front page?
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -7/+36This is sure taking longer to make the top 10 then leopard 10.5.2 update.
- POMP, on 03/19/2008, -3/+31It took over an hour to install on Vista Home Premium. But just with normal use it seems to be more responsive -- and copying is much faster.
- momentai07, on 03/19/2008, -4/+28Faster startup and shutdowns, copying, and alot more responsive. =)
- Matt2k, on 03/19/2008, -3/+27> i will post if things go well.
And you won't be posting if they don't. Got it. - MioTheGreat, on 03/19/2008, -1/+24Vista is the second most widely used desktop operating system in the world. There are more Vista users than OSX and Linux users combined.
So by your reasoning, OSX must have about about 3 or 4 users, and all of these Linux users I hear about are just a statistical error. - archer75, on 03/19/2008, -0/+22It's superfetch. My god would people look this up already. Vista isn't using all your ram to run, it's caching to the ram. In XP your unused ram sits idle. In Vista it caches to it so your apps launch faster. It's a good thing.
- majesticreality, on 03/19/2008, -3/+25I always appreciate people posting the actual source rather than sites like endgadget - so i don't want to crap on your links, but why not just link to the actual microsoft page http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/en/libr ...
- MrZop, on 03/19/2008, -6/+27SHUT THE ***** UP! (Nothing Against Linux, Buy C'mon.)
- GinsuGuy585, on 03/19/2008, -3/+24SP1 also includes updates that deal with two exploits we have seen, which can affect system stability for our customers.
The OEM Bios exploit, which involves modifying system files and the BIOS of the motherboard to mimic a type of product activation performed on copies of Windows that are pre-installed by OEMs in the factory.
The Grace Timer exploit, which attempts to reset the “grace time” limit between installation and activation to something like the year 2099 in some cases. - inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+21You lack talent, class, civility, intelligence, wit, charm, and just about every other redeeming quality one would look for in another human being. I bet you'd be popular in prison though.
- deadbaby, on 03/19/2008, -2/+22To honestly answer your question everyone knows it's just going to be a thread full of Microsoft bashing, Apple bashing/evangelizing. It's boring.
- estvir, on 03/19/2008, -3/+22Oh, it certainly was. I remember having a small number of friends who had upgraded and I refused to and I think I simply stuck to '98 longer than I should have.
- Kazbaeden, on 03/19/2008, -2/+20How can a $2000 laptop possibly not run Vista? I run it on a 4 year old single core Athlon 3000+ with 1GB ram flawlessly, worth about $200 today. For $2000 you should be talking at least dual core 2GHz, 2GB RAM and a GMA x3100, which is PLENTY for Vista.
- TyroPyro, on 03/19/2008, -1/+19After visiting the direct download page it actually showed up for me under Windows Update, and at only 125MB.
- arcooke, on 03/19/2008, -3/+20As much as I agree.. that line is getting really old now.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+17I think Creative and Logitech would beg to differ.
- binaryspiral, on 03/19/2008, -1/+18System Info was reporting how much ram the OS actually had to use... but so many people complained without actually learning something that microsoft decided to dumb it down again.
The actual amount of addressable memory is reduced when the OS has to also address memory for video cards, sound cards, and nics with onboard memory. This reduces the amount of ram available to the OS.
You're not getting more memory with SP1, you're just getting the amount of installed ram instead of the actual memory that the OS has. Frankly I was much happier knowing the truth. - slippiefist, on 03/19/2008, -1/+18434.5 MB *****.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -2/+19I installed it on two Vista machines today, One is much improved. uses 20 percent less ram and generally seems snappier.
- TacticalPenguin, on 03/19/2008, -2/+18I had ME on our old computer for a while. It crashed constantly. It froze whenever I tried to play my games which all worked fine on 98. I just overall hated it.
- joel8x, on 03/19/2008, -0/+16You gonna say that all day?
- KloroFormd, on 03/19/2008, -1/+17Ultimate Boot CD. Run Memtest86 overnight. Just a suggestion.
- wageslaven, on 03/19/2008, -0/+15Dont wait for "the community". Install it for yourself, and you'll know that on matters such as these, "The community" is really a lot of inaccurate FUD.
- kevin1987, on 03/19/2008, -7/+22YES - It DOES break the Paradox crack. On the bright side, it definitely seems a bit "snappier" and more like a real OS...
Hopefully someone will figure out a crack within 15 days so I don't have to reformat my HTPC - I knew it would break it but my curiosity won... - ArmandoM, on 03/19/2008, -2/+172nd highest selling OS in history... whether people want it or not, they're using it, and therefore care about if sp1 fixes problems or not.
I'm happy that I can copy files faster in explorer now. - DarkShroud, on 03/19/2008, -0/+14Good job proving him correct.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -10/+24I'll just wait for the torrent with the sp1 integra... I mean, to see if there aren't any problems documented with it. Yep.
- andycr512, on 03/19/2008, -0/+14Not necessarily. Memory failure can cause all kinds of very odd issues, including BSOD's.
