- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+29Thanks Microsoft.
With out your entrance to desktop widgetry we could have had WinFS instead.
What a waste of resources. - fascfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Does Konfab/Yahoo Widgets still hog up resources like crazy? I'm willing to give it another try, but was burned before by Konfab.
- grogan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11If you have actually used Vista, you would realize that there are a ridiculous number of improvements in every area of the OS.
Don't believe me? Check the Wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_Vista - TheCruz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I just hope it doesn't work as crappy as the whole active desktop thing they tried a while back.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Microsoft never claimed that.
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7you do know that dashboard is a copy of konfab right? and konfab is a copy of some other program that was made for windows I can't remember what it was called
- kiwiboyus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11^^^ Agreed, I do like the look and feel of RC2 so far though... There needs to be more than fancy graphics for me to upgrade.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, I'm not really that interested in widgets, but, what really irks me is that Get-a-Mac ad which implies that Microsoft "stole" Widgets and renamed them Gadgets.
Umm...okay...so...you know...Konfabulator didn't have Widgets? Nooooooo. - Ajaxpeapod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually "Gadgets" didn't' take a lot of development time.
I really doubt the heads of MS were sitting around going "WinFS" or "Gadgets"... ***** it, lets do "Gadgets".
Overall, for the OS, "Gadgets" are a good move & I bet you'd bitch and complain if they WEREN'T included.
So stop bitching, enjoy the features, use them or don't. This is probably your primary OS anyway, try to enjoy it or just switch, God knows there are plenty of alternatives for unhappy Windows users. - sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5its no where as bad as it was before.
if you get 3-4 well developed widgets that you may actually use instead of a ton of random ones, you should have no issue with over consumption of RAM with YWE.
Digg Search Widget: http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=38962
try it out if you are testing our yahoo widgets, i guarantee you'll like it. - ronin688, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use Yahoo/Konfabulator Widgets (just two) and I'm pretty happy with them.
They might have used a lot of resources in the past, but they don't affect my desktop system very much at all. My 3Dmark06 score changes by 5 points with the widgets on/off. I used to be really hardcore about reducing running processes but since I've gone to a dual-core 2GB RAM system I figure why have the resources if I'm not going to use them. My CPU idles at 0-1% usage, so it's never a big deal.
If I'm going to run something that's going to push my rig to the limit then I just quickly close the main widget engine and shut down some other running processes, but it's not often I get even close to 100% CPU or RAM usage so it's not really an issue. - Ajaxpeapod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3(I say this as someone who OWNS an OS X laptop and runs a Win XP desktop)
Well OS X has the advantage that the OS is designed to run ONLY on hardware specified by APPLE (try running OSX on an x86 machine, you can run into some nightmares).
Try developing an os to run on the other 80% of the worlds machines (think of all the variables, no SUPER DRIVES and one processor, think INTEL or AMD? which brand of burner, what type of RAM? which MObo are they using? etc...)
I'll take an os that can actually handle nearly everyone's machine rather than a machine that's over specialized and overpriced (although as I said before, a very good machine and one that I use on a regular basis)
Kill this fan boy crap, just because you killed your Windows machine and couldn't fix it, doesn't mean that the rest of the world wants to hear you bitch about how pathetic you are. - schmichael, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5No kidding. Does anyone actually use widgets for more than a day or two? They just seem annoying to me. If I want to know the damn weather, I'll look up the weather!
- dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You should be able to use widgets through networks.
Imagine you want to schedule a trip with some friends. You could send a trip widget with some time metadata through email. When the person gets the email, they could place it on their desktop as a reminder, drag and drop it in a calendar and have it pop up in the appropriate date, or drag it to their web site/blog for access anywhere.
Imagine that you want to get updates from a particular website. Just go to the website, and drag their widget to your desktop. - xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah active desktop was the lame
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can the Mac fanboys talking about OSX having widgets first do everyone a favour?
First go to the page the where you just read the above article. Use the breadcrumb links at the top of the page to go to page with all the windows news. Go back to some of the articles from 2003 and check the Vista previews, specifically the ones showing the Sidebar. Check the date on the article, then check the date that OSX included widgets. Then after realizing that Vista builds had the sidebar before OSX, put your tail between your legs and shut up for a change. - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure if someone wanted to they could develop a widget that reads google appointments or something that would come close.. or actually after more carefully reading it.. google calender would be a great option.. minus the widget
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Me too they are just annoying
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I don't know about you, but be it any os, the widgets are the FIRST think i turn off when i get to work.
They just hog up resources. - robodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unlike Linux whose sole base is pretty much power users and System Administrators Microsoft caters to every level of computer user and believe it or not there are a lot more people who like the widgets than those complaining on this board, problem is these are people who don't really understand system resources or memory use. For that matter they don't even care. The day Microsoft starts writing their software just to please those people that post on boards like this is the day Microsoft will have to start planning on closing their doors. I have to admit to being annoyed at those who believe Microsoft should be writing software just to please them. So like Ajaxpeapod said adapt or change but quit bitching.
- gizmogoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no difference between Vista Gadgets and Yahoo! Widgets, a place for widgets and gadgets and all platform is http://www.widgipedia.com
- sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You may be interested to learn that it is the vendors who write the drivers.
- Ajaxpeapod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Imagine you want to schedule a trip with some friends. You could send a trip widget with some time metadata through email."
OR you could just E-MAIL THEM. Unless you booked everything online... then you could FORWARD them the conformation e-mails you received from the booking company. Wow you never book travel online do you? Oh and by the way, if you're worried about your friends "forgetting" about your trip, you need to get new friends.
"Imagine that you want to get updates from a particular website. Just go to the website, and drag their widget to your desktop."
We have that, it's called RSS.
"Hope you can hear me all the way back in the 50's!" (that's family guy, in case you missed it) - Ajaxpeapod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually it really depends on your system, how many "widgets" you're using and more specifically... WHICH "widgets" you're using.
Some hog resources like CRAZY others do not.
Also, if you only have 512 RAM in your system and a Celeron processor... yea you'll notice slowdown. But if you have at least a GIG of ram, and are just don't run of the mill tasks (with a decent processor) you'll be fine.
Although I can personally say (as a Vista user) that "Gadgets" seem to run smoother and be more useful than "gadgets". Don't get me wrong, I love OS X and hit F12 on a regular basis, but YGE just doesn't run the same. - greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I frankly don't see the widget/gadget appeal. I'm on a laptop, and konfabulator just shortens battery life. If I used a desktop, or if there were any that were useful (my favorite was the weather one, but even that wasn't anything mind-boggling) maybe I'd feel differently.
- jvicinanza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1So someone please tell me when MS is going to do something original?
- OswaldKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Amen to that!
- danieltyack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2It's amazing how distinctly similar they look to the the Mac Widgets... Oh Crap, all of Vista is amazingly similar to OS X. Too bad it probably runs as poorly as all the other Microsoft operating systems.
- Gustav, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0They've been around for much longer than even these guys give them credit for...the earliest I can think of were the old WindowMaker/Afterstep "dockapps." From there they just got fancier. Decades later, Microsoft claims they invented the thing...
- Wallstreet, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0It's like the guy that comes to the party full of top shelf alchohol and he brings keystone light. It would be fine if that's all we had but too little too late.
- marioluigi123, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1*cough* Jackfield for Linux *cough*
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Run_Apple_DashBoard_Widgets_on_Linux
Will run Yahoo and Dashboard widgets. - tc811, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9Vista widgets are crap.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2OS X has widgets so it's about time Windows has them as well.
- websyndicate, on 10/12/2007, -19/+6Well I still like my OSX widgets. Anything less would be uncivilized
