- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+125FYI it's not microsofts bandwidth, it's akamis. They're a company that hosts large files for companies, not just a download manager.
sorry to burst your bubble - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -20/+125@aaronlidma: Grow up.
- thetanbark, on 10/12/2007, -9/+90I assume Microsoft is trying to forget about the Windows.XP.Pro.Corporate.Final-DEVILS0WN download event.
- lupinglade, on 10/12/2007, -14/+78Sorry to burst your bubble, but Akamai doesn't host it for free.
- IcyStorm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+57I love how Digg is full of people that hate Microsoft, but yet, the majority of them are likely using Windows.
- readme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Akimai charges my company $0.30 a gigabyte. So if you download Vista B2 @ 4GB you are costing Microsoft around $1.80. That's assuming MS pays that much, but with their volume it's probably less.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43It deactivates June 2007
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47Get over it. XP does not BSoD unless something is severely screwed (e.g. with your hardware, which isn't Windows's fault). Welcome to the year 2006.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -11/+46If anyone should be negative digged it's @aaronlidman
Instead he's applauded for wasting bandwidth and forcing people who legitimately WANT to download it to wait unnecessarily.
If you want to hold a love-fest with Linux and vilify Vista for no other reason than it's from Microsoft, that's fine. You don't have to act like a child and contribute to the bandwidth problem in the process. (I tried to download it only to be denied because the servers were overloaded due to the request volume.)
Seriously, stop being so pathetically dogmatic and get a life! - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37Oh yeah, I should've guessed. Everybody knows that 4GB times .30 cents per GB is $1.80... Wait........
- TogTogTogTog, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37No bittorrent? Pfft. "Legalality Issues" Double Pfft.
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32There are people who run companies that think $0.30 x 4 is $1.80?
NOW I understand how Enron collapsed. - amish, on 10/12/2007, -13/+38@ImTheDarkcyde: They are still paid by MS for the bandwidth so its same thing. They have to pay a lot for the bandwidth.
- awilke, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31I'm in the minority but I actually like Windows Vista Beta 2
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Doesn't mean there isn't one out there...
- schildkroeter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23No TimTim, that doesn't make it trialware. It's a beta!
Time-limited beta's are normal, of course - a company doesn't want you using an unfinished version for free forever, no one would buy the product. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -15/+34I think this was the same thing that Bink and AeroXP both posted. It was rated down due to "inaccuracy"
Oh well, have it your way. I rated this one down simply because the subject matter is no different from the other ones posted up and they also got rated down.
Speaking of which:
http://digg.com/links/Windows_Vista_could_break_the_internet
http://digg.com/links/Internet_down_Thank_Microsoft_and_the_demand_for_Vista_Beta_2_
Thats just, you know, a little reminder of the posts already made.
Rate me down, I dont care. Just stating the truth.
Either report it as a dupe or as lame: either one fits :P - awilke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24You can turn transparency off. The minimum requirements would fit most any PC sold today.
What junk? Most of the junk in XP comes from the vendors like compaq and dell who put their stupid programs on. An OEM or out of the box editions are fine.
The degrading part is true and it really sucks, IMO that should have been one of their top priorities for Vista. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18i'd say it might be the biggest download event from one source, but who knows how large the total amount of download on whatever the largest grossing torrent ever was. i bet it was more
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18They should have used Bittorrent. You still need a product key so it's not like downloading it is going to get you anywhere. I think the media has managed to convince people Bittorrent is illegal.
silly rabbit. - tnwake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Go look up the definition of BETA.. god forbid a beta product have bugs!
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30"Vista Beta 2: Biggest waste of bandwidth ever."
no, your comment gets that honor. kudos. - nwoolls, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Eww 3d in an OS is LAME, Microsoft are such lewsers, btw did you guys try XGL omg soooooo cool.
And how the ***** could you possibly know that Vista slowly degrades over time and requires a reinstall every six months. Have you been running it for six months you ignorant bastard? - alevel27mage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I like how this story was on the frontpage last night, got buried, and is now on the front page this morning. Go Digg!
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I like Vista, but the one thing that aggravated me to no end was the constand security dialogs it kept popping up, asking me to "Continue" or "Cancel". If any normal user keeps getting hit with those, they will eventually just keep clicking "Continue" on every single one. Thus making the system completely useless except for annoyance purposes. Thank God there's a way to disable it.
Microsoft needs to reevaluate their security strategy in Vista. The way it's done in Beta2 is TERRIBLE. - markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12using it now, wouldnt be suprised if people DONT buy it. Even for a beta2 its buggy as hell. Everytime they try and adjust my settings it turns off both of my screens for like 30 seconds... honestly, don't waste the band width or the 2 hour long install and config time. I will wait at least a year before i buy it finalized, maybe 2 years. they got XP working fine, why do they want to open up a whole new can of worms when they could just patch it... oh wait, no money in that...
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Genius of Microsoft to do this, really. Get the public addicted to Vista, warts and all, so they will be compelled to purchase the final release before the timebomb goes off.
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8At 4 GIG a download, it doesn't take that much people to make it the largest download in the history of MS in terms of bandwidth.
- lolox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I might disagree with you,...I will... In a multiple OS booting system if only one system fails it must be either on of the two,
one: system A is less fault tolerant than system B
two: System A interferes with my hardware in such a way that faults occur.
I'm not saying that my 3 year old laptop is top notch, but it hangs every first time I boot, then everything goes smoothly for a couple of ours ( 8-9 ). I think is heat but it could be dealt with by the OS in many ways..not just a sudden hang...yes an ubuntu does not hang on the same machine ( you knew that was coming). - vedichymn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Ahhahahahah, the blizzard updater is USELESS. Everyone just snags the update from a fileplanet or one of the other sites that mirror the updates because it's a lot less of a pain in the ass.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14My roommate and I both love it. I realize it is beta now, so if they can fix the various issues I've seen so far by the time it comes out next year, I'm upgrading the first chance I get.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18no, that place would be reseved for all the bandwidth wasted on spam and popups, which MS largely had a hand in creating thanks to IE
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You mean mac book pro. LOL overheat LOL
- SpyDerMann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You're right about that. Bittorrent started a revolution in downloads, and only direct downloads can be measured right now. I guess this is the reason for MS not to use bittorrent, they wouldn't get the publicity stunts like today's.
- TJ229ER, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I agree vista is great so far. I installed yesterday and havn't had to boot back to XP yet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Truth demands it:
"For all the Linux Nazis out there:"
Is this coming from a Windows Nazi by any chance? :P
"Linux is NOT as easy to work with on the desktop for the non-technical user."
*****, I've setup Ubuntu for several 70 - 80 year olds and they love and prefer Ubuntu Linux and refuse to use Windows anymore because of the problems they had with Windows.
It's time to put an end to the lies about Linux not being ready for non-techies, see this good post:
http://linux.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=187412&cid=15462368
A nice quote from the above linked post on slashdot: (begin quote)""Grandma" does not exist, so stop pulling her out. Let's analyse what kind of person Grandma would have to be to fit the description: She is concerned about the performance loss between the nv and nvidia drivers, but unable to follow the three steps documented under "documentation" on Ubuntus webpage to get the nvidia driver. Also, she is completely able to download and install an updated executable from the correct website when she is in Windows. That kind of person does not exist." (end quote)
"My parents and grandparents use Windows but I wouldn't DARE put Linux, even Ubuntu in front of them"
That's amusing, because I have people who are 70-80 years old and use Linux just fine, some of them don't know the difference between a web browser and the internet.
"Realize that Linux is NOT going to replace to Microsoft"
Linux is already replacing Windows on many desktops and servers.
"We're talking about software here..."
We're talking freedom here
"If you want to hate Microsoft, that's fine."
Thanks for your permission :P
"But I wish you people would put even HALF this much vitriol into going after the entities that are TRULY destroying this country / world..."
Hey one doesn't become a convicted monopoly for nothing.
"Note: I use Linux (Fedora Core for servers, Ubuntu on some desktops)."
I doubt it - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6“We thought about Bit Torrent a lot, especially in the planning stages for this. There are legal and privacy issues which unfortunately make that not an option for Microsoft to officially sponsor a BitTorrent. I really wish we could do it, but we can’t.”
What a joke. HTTP Server downloads are so last century. - pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nah, Linux is fine for non-technical users. They'll browse the web and check their email, just like they always have. They won't really understand Linux, but they're the type that doesn't understand Windows either. They won't be setting up Linux themselves any more than they'd set up Windows. The people who run in to trouble are those who know just enough about Windows to be dangerous but don't have the technical acumen to adapt to something different.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5RC1 is release candidate 1, which is usually a feature complete and mainly stable version thats released to squash all the final bugs. I SERIOUSLY doubt MS will offer anyone downloading this beta a discount on the final.
- radison2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I have been using vista beta 2 for 2 weeks now and besides a few quirks I have to say it's pretty awesome. Of course, my opinion will change once I have to pay $400 for it. But juding it as purely a piece of software it is very good.
My fave feature is the total backup. You can backup all your drives to an external drive or burn it to dvds. Then when things go sour you can boot off the install dvd and say "restore from backup" and you are back to a working system.
Basically they have done away with the need for ghost or acronis and the like. Not good for those companies but good for the end user. - TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I got it via a torrent on Mininova. The person who put it up even thoughtfully compressed it in .7z to 2.7 GB! I don't remember the URL, but a friend of mine on the torrent says it's still plenty active.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Linux is free and if you take into consideration how much money Microsoft will want for a copy of Vista it leads lots of people to argue about it's quality.
Heck if Ubuntu cost me $400 a computer I would bitch like no other about the install and configuration process. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+84 gigs just for an OS installation. Someone in Redmond has lost their ***** mind.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Back in my more naive, idealistic days, I used to be excited about beta releases. Not anymore. Wake me up when Vista SP2 is out.
- markcrules, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I used to have my username as Administrator for XP (yes I know you shouldnt, but I wanted to) and I used the upgrade wizard to install Vista... there was a hell of a problem, the computer would complain that 'Administrator' has been disabled. Even going into safe mode and creating a 'normal' account didnt help, every time I logged in, it kicked up (and rightly so, it does seem more 'linuxy' security wise).
Anyway... I wiped the partition and installed it a second time and not only did it install quicker, it works a treat. I've dumped XP and will continue to use Vista.
As a second comment, I bet those that are complaining about bloat and eye candy in Vista are the same people that are singing the praises of Linux, XGL and compiz, which I also use. - hookid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The DVD guarantees you RCI upgrade (as long as you activate).”
What does this mean? When vista comes out you will get a discount? How much of discount? Because i'd be glad to pay $6.00 for shipping to get like $100 off when it releases. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7thanks for the review. I don't think i'm going to buy it now if 1 digg user thinks it's lame.
just saved me some money... oh yeah! - awilke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@nwoolls
The file system is nearly unchanged from XP, it will degrade like XP. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They could have just used Bittorrent and avoided all this trouble.
But I think they are exaggerating the demand. It's not so much the number of users, but the sheer bloat of Vista that is taking up so much bandwidth! - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4LOL. So much for all of Vista's new "features." Obviously, few people are going to want to use them when they are so bloated, and really not that beneficial compared to third party apps.
Windows defender? Please. You know that's got a giant back door to allow Steve Ballmer and Dick Cheney to snoop around your PC when you're not looking.
And UAC? First of all, that's the corporation from Doom that unleashed hell upon the Earth because of it's lack of security. Is MS trying to be funny?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Aerospace_Corporation
Second, UAC is so annoying no one wants to use it. So how is it going to improve security? I know MS is working on it, but the solution they came up with isn't going to work. They want to add UAC bypass patches to every registered app and driver ever made for XP and Vista? Good luck with that.
Then there are the other "features". Aero... yeah, that's great. Once again something most users don't really want, especially in the corporate world. Upgrade your PC to get some cheeseball 3D effects? I'd rather have performance, stability, and security than eye-candy. 5-15GB of this garbage to install Vista. What a farce. -
