- themarq, on 05/14/2008, -2/+90Well I guess if my brother was murdered by a Second Life avatar this would be useful.
- Surferess, on 05/14/2008, -11/+2ROTFLMAO
- lex0nyc, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7NO, NO, NO! I told you, the guy was a furry with giant pink wings! This is useless. :-(
- dOOBiEx213, on 05/14/2008, -1/+10Seriously. This is the best they can do!? Counterstrike graphics ftl. At this rate, I don't think I'll see The Matrix in my lifetime =(.
- maninalift, on 05/14/2008, -4/+3This is a research project into using VR not a game, why would you expect them to pay for a modern graphics engine?
- michaelb323, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2because the Source game engine is very cheep to use and it would support very realistic graphics with standard hardware.
- Katana314, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1Do ur homwurk. Source, like many engines, is very expensive to license. But they WOULD have to pay for a modern graphics engine to get any realism into the person someone is trying to identify.
- cdahlkvist, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Looks like she was gangbanged by a group of black thugs in Second Life.
- purplehaze420, on 05/14/2008, -2/+9Pretty cool, but I was really hoping she was going to walk head-first into that wall, would have been a lot more entertaining.
- Nougat, on 05/14/2008, -5/+31And the point of this is ... ?
- MasterPlayer, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9For witnesses to get an up close and personal view of each suspect, without the fear of them seeing their face, and it also allows for modifications to the suspects clothes, hair etc. so a witness can help ID a suspect better. Also, at the end of the video, the suspects were each put in the virtual realization of the crime scene, again to help jog the witness's memory in choosing the criminal.
- SixOrSoPapers, on 05/14/2008, -4/+18This is all good in theory, but it is pretty scary that someone could be ID'd and tried for a crime based on a clumsy 3d likeness. We're just not there yet.
- vexingmodstwo, on 05/14/2008, -4/+4Umm... in your haste to seem "smart" and stuff you have jumped the gun a bit. I don't think anyone is suggesting this is ready for prime-time.
- SixOrSoPapers, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Easy now. In your haste to be critical you misrepresented my point. I've been watching computer graphics improve slowly but surely over the past two decades, and I am not convinced that at any time in the foreseeable future I would trust a process of such importance to a simulation. The validity of the argument doesn't hinge on the when the technology is "ready for prime-time."
- TheKorn2, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3vexingmodstwo: neither are polygraph tests, yet you see them being used all the time!
- vexingmodstwo, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I concur... but I fail to see the relevance of that comment in relation to mine...
- DarkenKO, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2the graphics engine can be upgraded... its a research project not a final product.

- Cimlite, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3No Idea... but this is clearly what we need to improve GTA IV.
- akula89, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2this is probably scarier than seeing the real criminal
- luke16, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Virtual porn, that is all.
- MasterPlayer, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9For witnesses to get an up close and personal view of each suspect, without the fear of them seeing their face, and it also allows for modifications to the suspects clothes, hair etc. so a witness can help ID a suspect better. - MeltingIce, on 05/14/2008, -3/+23Thats impressive VR technology but why do the graphics suck so much? It reminds me of Goldeneye on the N64.
- mtwoar, on 05/14/2008, -5/+1The name's Bond. James Bond.
- gthyb, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Stanford got ahold of the Perfect Dark engine!

- MattSkiX13, on 05/14/2008, -3/+1anyone find a mirror?
- ivosilva, on 05/14/2008, -4/+16I found that instance when the african-american individual is, arbitrarily, given an hairstyle in which the hair extends out from the head like a halo, rather amusing.
- chanop, on 05/14/2008, -8/+4I find your epic fail disturbing
- ivosilva, on 05/14/2008, -0/+9Me too.
- BadseedJR, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6I find your usage of the phrase "epic fail" ridiculous.
- chanop, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1Yeah, I feel dirty for using it
- TheKorn2, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6I also found the instance when the african-american individual is arbitrarily given a hairstyle where the hair extends out form the head like a halo amusing!
- KayDex86, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Weren't they all african-american individuals?
- chanop, on 05/14/2008, -8/+4I find your epic fail disturbing
- vexingmodstwo, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4Why do they have to be black?
- leerayIG88, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1racist people.
- minorthreat, on 05/14/2008, -2/+11I love black guys with afros.
- Monkeydew06, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I love afros with black guys.
- yaosio, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5I really liked when they all walked through the door to get into the room, it was very lifelike and really made me think I was watching a real police lineup. This would kill my GeForce 256 though.
- bubbadoo989, on 05/14/2008, -2/+2The black dude did it.....
- DCGaymer, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Racial sensitivities aside .... it would make perfect sense to drop the possible perpatrators into the exact same location where the crime happened as well as the same time it hapened. Too often the variables of seeing a person in different lighting.... after they've changed their hairstyles...different clothing....etc etc .... can make it difficult to be sure.
- TheKorn2, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4"But officer, NONE of thes guys look like Bowser!"
- Think4urself, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5WTF! Guess it was a black dude that did it this time again. Well all this will do is add to the list of wrongful convictions caused by eyewitness misidentification.
http://www.innocentproject.org/understand/Eyewitne ...
--Eyewitness misidentification is the single greatest cause of wrongful convictions nationwide, playing a role in more than 75% of convictions overturned through DNA testing.---
"While eyewitness testimony can be persuasive evidence before a judge or jury, 30 years of strong social science research has proven that eyewitness identification is often unreliable. Research shows that the human mind is not like a tape recorder; we neither record events exactly as we see them, nor recall them like a tape that has been rewound."
In the vast number of cases where DNA exonerates folks convicted through eyewitness identification, the culprit was not even in the lineup. People have a tendency to just choose the person that looks the most like the person they remember.
Plus folks tend to change their "memories" to fit the suspects in the line up. So before the line up they would say, "he's about 6 2 with short hair and light brown complexion" then after the line up, and after seeing someone that reminds them a bit of the suspect they would say "hmm actually yeah, he was more like 5 8 with medium length hair and dark brown complexion". Of course, during the trial, the jury will hear "The victim CONFIDENTLY chose the suspect out of a line up"!
And ofcourse in places like good ole Texas you'll have lineups like this one where the victim says the suspect is black and they only put ONE black person in the lineup. See it here:
http://www.psychology.iastate.edu/faculty/gwells/b ...- DarkenKO, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1and i suppose you have done this exact research project on your own time? in case you didnt notice, its a research project being performed at Stanford University. They may or may not come to the conclusion that this technology is useless, however if they dont perform a research project at all, no one will have evidence of any success.
- CrackHappy, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1AHHHHH MY EYES
- maninalift, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5I am a black guy with an afro... sort of
- grimward, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6And we all love the part where you randomly got it from a girl! :D
- VandyB, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2I don't like this idea.
You ever try to remember something to hard your mind pictures that scene happening, and then you find out from your friends that isn't what happened?
Imagine being put in a position where your mind sees the clothes, the surroundings and automatically starts to put that innocent person in the situation you were victimised in.
I think the line between reality and you "remembering things" would blur, leading to big, big mistakes.- Monkeydew06, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1But at the same time, police drag in at least 1 suspect (which they believe to be guilty) amongst random paid citizens and sometimes officers in an attempt to confirm his identity against the odds. Being fingered in a line up can be used as evidence, but cannot hold a case on its own.
- h0stile17, on 05/14/2008, -2/+11 of those guys looked like Barack Obama.
- robthom, on 05/14/2008, -2/+2Lol @ the giant arrow over the black guy.
- slipkn0tz23, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3I love the part where she randomly gives the afro a black guy.
- leerayIG88, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1WYMCA?
- normalkid0615, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2i never understood lineups, if they arrest someone, ask them "hey is this the guu who stole ur purse", not "out of these 6 people, which one looks like the one who stole your purse, or would steal a purse for that matter"
- Monkeydew06, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Your watching too much television. The victim is never informed which of the men/women are an actual suspect... in a lot of cases not even the other participants know who is the suspect.
- lotuseater, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6I appreciate the segment in which the young woman arbitrarily provides the African American with an afro.
- Wrathernaut, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2Me too.
- 2Bnor2B, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Great idea, but I worry that lawyers may be able to claim that the victim did not identify the real defendant.
- Wrathernaut, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1It's a good thing the computer can re-create the hastily shaven afro on the black dude. That'll help identify the real suspect.
- bozodaclown51, on 05/14/2008, -1/+0I did not enjoy the part where she randomly gives the black guy an afro
- darlyn, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1SOMEONE INTEGRATE THIS WITH MODERN VIDEO GAMES, *NOW*!
- diggjosh, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2I love the part where she randomly gives the black guy an afro.
- SixOrSoPapers, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0If the graphics do get realistic enough, this could actually be dangerous. The human mind already makes it easy enough to fabricate memories, but now you would have potentially lifelike images of various people at the scene of the crime. As time passes, sometimes these still shot memories are all that remain... "oh yeah, now I remember, he /was/ there..."
