- Ebeniz, on 10/12/2007, -16/+40why even ask? Because 97% of the people in the world use a WinBox
- AlbedoPiasora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23You can link directly to the .swf file in the screensaver and view without the rest of the interface...
http://labs.digg.com/swarm/main.swf
that was the first thing I did as soon as the features went live... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Yeah, you need to set the 'Start Scrolling After xx Seconds' thing to something mad like 999 so that it loads the page properly! Soz, should have mentioned that!
- bbgmp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29Anything for the PC?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I'm a Linux user, a Mac user, and a Windows user. Is it ok if I'm combined?
Sheesh. They're operating systems, not religions. - underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I was just wondering about something like this... you ROCK!
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Yes
- sebflipper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12If you have Windows try using this screensaver: http://www.e-motional.com/Autowebview.htm
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19wow. and people wonder why there's a rift between PC users and Linuxtosh users. Sheesh, peeople, no need to be ***** pricks....

just full screen - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16and that has what to do with Digg Labs?
nothing. - Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10if i'm not mistaken if you know a little html, you should be able to set up an html document containing the .swf of digg labs as your desktop.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I still say Flying Toasters is the best screensaver ever.
That, or Blank Screen. - underburn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I dont know what you guys are talking about, it works fine.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Why climb stairs when you can use the elevator?
- RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's not a dump truck!!
- asdiomar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you're worrying about the LCD longevity, you're wrong: the only component aging in a LCD screen is the backlight (50,000 hours to go to half brightness). And it can be cheaply replaced.
Plus, LCDs consumes less power compared to CRTs.
A CRT ages faster (10,000-20,000 hours to go half brightness) and when an oxide layer forms on the cathode of the electron gun or when the phosphor ages you're done. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love the fact that most people who like to call others "stupid" usually do so with several spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors.
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5nah it runs for an hour and then clogs up the tubes
mine did any way - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you don't like it, don't use it. Nobody is forcing you to use digg swarm instead of the homepage.
- Xsecrets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm glad you pointed out that direct link to the swf file. On linux which we all know doesn't have the latest version of flash the labs.digg.com just tells you that you need the latest version, but if you just put in the .swf files directly it seems to work fine with flash7 on linux.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dude, wtf has that got to do about anything.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Huh? Ok, I'll bite. How is running a screensaver on an LCD any different than when you're using the LCD?
- superterran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Digg labs isn't a standad Windows feature, nor is making a webpage a screen saver. Come on, man - get your head out of your ass. Stop acting like a punk because your idleweb'eque Windows Screen saver crashes and runs like ***** because it was written in VB5 six years ago.
+Digg because it's awesome. - albybum, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Simple VB.Net screensaver using the Swarm SWF File.
Requires Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0
http://www.albybum.net/diggSaver.zip
Rename the .exe file inside to a .scr to make it a screensaver and drop it in the Windows folder.
I made this for myself, but thought I would share it. - asdiomar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@coldfusion: in your first post you said "pity I have an LCD", or in other terms "if I had a CRT I'd use a screensaver"
Yes, the brightness diminishes (that's what I have just posted!), but it takes more for an LCD to age rather than a CRT (50,000h vs. 20,000h)
These parameters tell you how much it take for yuor monitor to have half the brightness of a new one. Higher is better => You should worry if you had a CRT, not if you have an LCD. - defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dunno... it would be better if there was a fuction that would let you use the mouse to select stuff and press esc to quit the screensaver. The RSS Feed screensaver is much more convenient for me. ^_^
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That's not the swarm, that's the RSS. They are completely different. And you wonder why people regard Mac users as idiots?
- albybum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Updated the program with some of the suggestions. Probably my last update to the program unless I get inspired or find an annoying bug.
http://www.albybum.net/diggSaver.zip - homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome! Digg swarm makes a great screensaver.
You have to choose kiosk mode, as the other two will refresh every couple of seconds, causing the flash to reload.
I wish the desktop mode didn't refresh, as I'd love to have swarm as my wallpaper...
Here's a screenshot. It just looks like swarm full-screened.
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/3825/digglabsscreensaverbc8.png - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've looked at it and it won't make a good screen saver, a lot of the flash file is static. The only thing that moves often is the minutes and seconds. The rest of the stuff stays displaying the same, burn in on your monitor? You betcha!
- Redstar1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I tried to get IdleWeb to work, but it froze my Dual 2.0 G5. I tried again and it crashed System Preferences. *shrug* dunno what that's all about.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3actually anything on yugop.com is worth taking a look at for consideration as a screensaver.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The luminance of a LCD will diminish over a period of time (ie. it wont be as bright as it was originally) as LCD displays only have a limited lifespan.
Which is why you should set a computer with a LCD display to completely blackout the screen after a period of inactivity (ie. set the Energy Saver to put the display to sleep), rather than use a screensaver.
If you use a screen saver all the time, then you dont save the brightness of the LCD and it progressively gets dimmer and dimmer much more quickly than normal. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now if there was a way to JUST have the swarm without the rest of the interface it would be godly. For now this is great enough though :) Dugg
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5screen shots anyone?
- benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thanks for the hint.
was wondering if this was possible
works perfectly for me.
would be nice if we could get rid of the bar at the top but still cool anyway - chadseld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The good thing is that the backlights on LCD screens can be replaced rather cheaply. For example http://www.lcdpart.com/ can provide new tubes for your iBook for about $20. Installation is up to you however.
- homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah, I see. You just have to set the scroll timer to a high number. Swarm, meet my desktop.
Thanks, whatevasista! - CameronKollwitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I would love to see something like this for PC.
- omarqaz7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't work for me either... this other Screen Saver does the same thing though, and works perfectly.
It dosn't have features like scrolling like this one does but it's ok for swarm and stack.
http://www.roflsoftware.com/ROFL/index.php/archives/3 - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But wait, doesn't the digg labs thing only update itself for 5 minutes, and then it stops and tells you you're clogging up the tubes?
I thought that's what I read earlier today. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3doesn't work for me...white screen
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Then read the comments, it was already addressed above...
- PictorieN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another when you click on the links should open in default browser instead of IE. Also maybe instead of removing screensaver on mouse movement maybe spacebar or anykey to remove it. so many possablities even just for a screensaver for all digg fans. huge amount of development can be made.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well i knackered the screen on one of my iBooks (G3 clamshell model) by leaving the computer on all the time and running the lens flare screensaver when it was inactive (including overnight).
The screen display is now so dim that its very hard to make out the windows and menus.
So i always do things the correct way now and sleep the screen after a period of inactivity. I would not be happy to screw-up my Intel iMac. - ericab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dugg because I was looking for an app like IdleWeb. Danke!
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try setting the "Start Scrolling" [ in seconds I assume ] number to something really high like... 999999999999999999999999999999999999. It trying to scroll an unscrollable page might be causing your problems. :)
