- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -22/+90What about burying / digging comments? I hear that crashes IE7..?
- CrumbleBeeHaHa, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23I've been using IE7 since it came out as well and love it. Keep in mind it's BETA (not Google's definition of beta, this will actually become a real product) and the fact that bugs have been fixed between builds shows that they are making progress toward a final, mostly bug free release.
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Sorry, did I miss the memo that said you have to be running a Mac to visit "tech" websites?
All most all of the world runs Windows, not to mention Internet Explorer. Why do people that run Linux/Macs think they are better then EVERYONE? - technel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13That would be IE's Javascript interpreter :-)
- technel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13As far as I can tell, IE6 renders Digg fine (I do not use it regularly). You seriously are expecting Digg to employ hacks to make it work in a BETA "Preview"?
- radda, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22It still crashes...IE7 was looking good too, but if they can't get AJAX or whatever this is written with to work properly, I'll stick with Firefox
- Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Unless Microsoft can get Internet Explorer standards-compliant and working properly with emerging web technologies (quite a few they have had a hand in), they're just digging their own grave in the browser war. People are starting to realize that the browser they get in the box just isn't good, and they're not really trying to change that.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"Oh, and if IE doesn't render Digg properly, that's Digg's fault."
*****. Microsoft is a member of the W3C so they know full well what's involved with these standards. The fact that they make concerted efforts not to follow them is asinine.
I'm NOT a fan of the "Best browsed with" stuff, but to demand that people spend their time working around a broken product is pretty crappy. Microsft needs to get its IE act together, end of story. - pupppet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Won't IE7 be in beta for another 6 months? It shouldn't surprise anyone it's not ready yet.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14This new IE7 has not crashed on me when I show or bury comments.
The previous build did, though.
radda, I used your comment to test that. I buried it, then showed it, then hid it again. NO crash. Make sure to UNINSTALL the previous version BEFORE installing this new one and whining. ;)
So, radda and Mr. Rose, IE7 is back in useful form. ;) - Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Just to play devil's advocate a bit here, but it's probable that Digg is written for Firefox"
http://digg.com/js/xmlhttp.js
At the top of this file, you can see it detects for IE, then uses the XMLHTTP ActiveX object. It then trys to detect the XMLHttpRequest object (how Mozilla does it).
I'm almost certain this site was not designed for one specific browser. That would be moronic. - scsikool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This code is not Gold, it's beta. There are always issues with beta code. It's the nature of the beast. You write some code and test it on different platforms, get input, write again. If you want something stable stick with production code and let the testers play with the beta. It's not for the feight of heart.
btw, I like both Firefox and IE. I use both of them. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Because if you couldnt that would Closen the gap between firefox and ie 7... because the people on digg are the ones who recomend the sofware to the little old ladies and install it for them!
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Try holding down CTRL when you (X)-close the window of the application. Makes Windows XP set the size you had the window set to default. IE6 is the worst app when it comes to this because it usually remembers the size of the last opened window - sometimes even if it was a popup...until you raped it with this trick that is.
- OregonTrail, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Just to play devil's advocate a bit here, but it's probable that Digg is written for Firefox
But IE's compliance sucks so who cares - joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6IE is supposed to support XMLHTTPRequest as an ActiveX object and a native JScript object. The scripts really should test for functionality, not browser versions.
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I will say, digg is the only website that doesnt display properly...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7IE7 is shaping up to be good.
- LNahid2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just did that. Now, rather than crashing, IE7 shows the comment for a second and then it disappears.
- oldgeek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I have used firefox for so long i just can't change back. I tryed a beta of IE7 and it just does nothing for me at all.
- pimpsallad, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I am in IE7.0.5335.5 and no, I am sorry but it doesn't display digg right.
this "Who dugg this" as the bottom is messed up, along with peoples user profiles. And I have only been on digg for a minute..
And diggs peoples comments doesn't crash IE
:edit: back in firefox. I just don't like IE any more.. - LNahid2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My only problem with IE7 is that it crashes when I try to show a buried comment. Otherwise, I love it.
- technel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I agree with the fact that by them "fixing" IE with their latest version is just going to digg (no pun intended) them deeper, but only in the eyes of web designers/developers. Why? Because, as it stands right now, they still have a lack compliance with the W3C's standards and that will inevitably result in more "hacks" and workarounds. On the other hand, they still do appear to be getting better.
And just one more note, I don't think MOST people have come to the realization of why their IE is poor. For the most part, websites are pretty much required to support the browser because of its overwhelming market share, and so your everyday user probably would not notice any faults in it. - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Again, current build doesn't crash on me there. The one before did. Uninstall, then install new version.
- Fipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4IE is a major new release of a major product. Of course it's going to have two betas. Saying "lol its just funny that it took them 2 betas to get it right...." is like saying that there should be one testing version of Office out for two weeks before they release it in stores.
- jayred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yes Kevin IE7 works fine with Digg. Burying/Digging comments works great.
- LNahid2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It seems to hide the comment below it as well. I took a video of the screen.
http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2F5E9IJ475VFT0MAZ33QSWYJHX - cadavreexquis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yay! The min- and max- width/height CSS properties have FINALLY been fixed! We web designers have been begging for this to be fixed.
There are still a number of issues and fix requests, most of which are mentioned in the comments on the IE7 blog:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/20/555703.aspx#comments - joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"It still crashes...IE7 was looking good too, but if they can't get AJAX or whatever this is written with to work properly, I'll stick with Firefox"
IE invented AJAX (well, at least the XMLHTTPRequest part), so I'm sure they will support it. - merlinicorpus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been test driving IE7 ever since the beta started, and its a huge improvement over IE6. I actually prefer the look and feel of it over Firefox. The main problem I've noticed is that IE7 doesn't handle Web 2.0 sites in general very well. Sites such as Digg, YouTube, Flickr... etc, all have some serious issues. YouTube has a disturbing tendency to crash IE7, Digg's layout is all screwed up (comments are still almost impossible), and I've stopped trying to use Flickr with it. Other than the stability issues (it crashes about once a day) and the problems with rendering some of the more advanced sites, it's actually pretty good. Especially you get past the fanboy Microsoft bashing and remember that this is a freaking beta. When the final version is released, I'll probably dump Firefox and use IE7 and Opera as my primary browsers.
- joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They are actually fixing a lot of the problems they had before with standards. Take a look at the IEBlog (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/). Don't worry, it's not infested with MS fanboys.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Digg fails W3 Markup Validation. http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fdigg.com&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline
- sid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a refreshed build of the Beta 2 PREVIEW, released on 20 March. This is NOT beta 2.
And please do not compare betas.
Also I use Windows and Maxthon (IE6 shell) myself -- Firefox is just too slow for my taste -- and I have no problems with Digg. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Parent is a troll. //heh, how very /. of me
It is because of lazy people deciding to code around IE's quirks rather than code to web standards that have basically let IE get away with murder when it comes to standards support.
And that has to and IS changing - Firefox, Opera, and other alternative browsers are gaining enough marketshare to keep Microsoft in line and let them know they have to a)innovate and b)stick to standards - hence the rendering fixes between releases of the IE7 beta. - jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why'd you spell digg with two g's if there's no pun intended?
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if I'm using some special me-only version of IE7 - digg is fine in it for me, including burying/showing comments, display at the bottom, etc...
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I just updated to IE7.0.5335.5
It displays the stories on the homepage better, but the "buttons" on the bottom and top (All diggers, my friends, digging history, friends etc) are all stretched and display with scroll bars. I'll post a video soon.
On second thought, my Google Toolbar Spellcheck doesnt work, I'm switching back. - Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just updated to IE7 Beta. The one thing I cannot understand is why it insists on resizing itself to a 3x5 window. Firefox never does that, but IE continues to do so.
- redzombi2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How is it a problem with FF when a AD comes up in the corner?? I Don't know of any bugs in FF that cause ads to pop up! Not insisting that I am correct, just does not sound logical to me, that is if I understand the issue striker1211 is trying to explain.
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG!!! All these complaints about beta software not working correctly are driving me crazy!
It's beta for a reason. Download and use at your own risk!
As for the firefox and opera lovers out there, your software went through betas just like everything else. The beta versions of the software had flaws before it was released just like everyone else.
Grow up. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's no longer a problem for me since the update. IE would always crash when I tried to show burried comments but everything works properly now. It's a muster have upgrade for IE 7 beta users.
- redzombi2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@striker1211, That does not sound like a FF problem, more like a spyware/adware problem.
- scarecrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i thought everyone used firefox now?.....
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Go to Add or Remove Programs, check the show updates box, then scroll down to all the Windows Updates, find the IE7 one and click Remove. IE6 is still on your machine.
- Kellan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Right-click on a tab, refresh all.
- rosemat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have had probs with the drop down menus (when reporting a story oldnew/lame etc.) when using IE7
- Bonobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some parts of the site are messed up like the friends and diggers ont he bottom of this page...and everything looks blurry..
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I don't understand what's so different as to get people's panties in a twist? Is it just blind zealotry?
- DrRo183, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok ONE question. When I try to print from firefox, it crashes almost ALL THE TIME! I tried to reinstall, and nothing. Reasons or suggestions?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have IE7 and it keeps trying to make me update it when i try to view this thread, so that is how i knew that there was a time for the update. . .

What is Digg?
