- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What makes it so good?
1) Community support. If you have a problem you can probably just google a HOWTO or forum post. If not, jump on IRC and be polite and patient and you will get help.
2) Ubuntu is very up-to-date. New packages are released often and there's a slick GUI for updating and installing them.
3) Ubuntu isn't bloated. You won't find 15 different programs for every task. Out of the box you'll have a nice GUI with all the basic programs you need an the option of installing or switching apps via the GUI
The only drawback is Ubuntu 6.x is not production quality. You may have a few issues here and there. I've been using it for 3 months on my laptop and I've yet to have any serious problems. You could probably stick with 5.x for now but beware the hardware support may not be quite as good as 6.x (which has worked perfectly on dozens of machines for me, it supports _alot_ of hardware) - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Linux does that...
Installing codecs and getting dvds and stuff working correctly might be a pain. If you go with ubuntu, make sure to check this guide out:

They are really fast, I guess digg has that effect. - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7honest mistake to make.... when a program is released its called going gold! alpha is first stage where they are just adding features. Beta is designed for working out the little bugs.
Please guys use the torrents to download! I just downloaded it at an average of 600kb so its plenty fast. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Truly. Edgy (7.06? 6.10?) sounds very, very promising; I'm definitely excited about the rate at which desktop Linux is progressing.

- beerorkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5people are freaking out over this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=162648 I understand, but I have been using dapper for quite some time and it is no diff today than yesterday.
I guess it is just nice to see that it is getting closer to the release. But, it still rocks really really good. It is my primary OS at work and home. - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6umm.. when something goes beta, its better than alpha..
Like a program is first in Development > Alpha > Beta > Final Release.
I thought anyone who visits digg would know that... wow..
Dapper Drake was in alpha status the last couple months, now its finally beta. - albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah and to make it look good, check out these sites:
http://gnome-look.org/
http://www.kde-look.org/
(depending on whether you use kde or gnome)
You can make your desktop look pretty tight and just how you like it. - behemothaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have been massively happy with Ubuntu since I started using it about 9 months ago - I have had problems with Linux distros in the past because I use a laptop mostly and usually a pretty new model.
I installed Dapper a short while back on my T43 and had all sorts of trouble with a lot of the add-ons I use to get the most out of my hardware. There are great guides out there for getting all the features you use on your laptop working with Breezy - would suggest to anyone looking to try Linux for the first time that at this stage go with Breezy Badger 5.10, otherwise you may find some bugs which will turn you off Linux for good!
Also start dual boot... Install XP first & leave some space and then install Breezy - it is amazingly straightforward and *just works* on every laptop I have tried.
Another great option for trying out the OS is this: http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/ubuntu.html
Free and allows you to get a good feel for it before you commit to rebuilding etc. But if, as someone above said, you have a spare machine floating around then give Dapper a go! - antipasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been using the dapper alphas for awhile now, and I've gotta say it is improving in leaps and bounds. I'm very impressed with the progress they've been making. I'm downloading the live/desktop install disk now to try to convince my brother to install it on his laptop.
- officerdoofy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ubuntu. It's the simplest and easiest to learn in my opinion. Plus, it has a great support community behind if you need any help (forums and IRC).
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4actually i think it will mean a shorter bug test time than a feature time.
It wont be such a bad thing however because of all the extra work that went into dapper. we still have 6 weeks till the dapper release and at this point it is already F'ing awesome The work from now till final will create an excellent groundwork for edgy. - chriszma666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"if the number one reason to adopt an OS is that it has great support for when things go sideways, it's probably an OS i'll avoid...
/osx means never having to ask for help..."
wow, you make me and probably every other mac/linux user feel stupid. mac fanboys are supposed to bash windows, not linux dumbass. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Without wanting to get anyone screwing up production systems, Dapper is really worth installing/upgrading to on a non-crucial machine. Firefox 1.5, Beagle Integration, XGL, Epiphany + Adblock, GStreamer 10, Updated Rhythmbox, the latest Tango aswell as Tangerine (ubuntu-ised Tango) & Human Iconsets, Ubuntulooks (clean, fast and different), Network Manager, Gnome Power Manager and all around **huge** speed improvements, Better Hibernate/sleep support... the list goes on. Its really amazing to see how far Ubuntu's come in the last six months.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4thanks, I will give it a try. I have been checking out amaroK and it seems to beat the hell out of winamp, which is what I am using with windows. I hate how winamp tells me to upgrade every time I start it up. Now comes the process of backing up my library, which shouldn't be too bad since I got a dvd burner a few months ago.
I was very impressed with all the helpful responses. Who says linux users are snobs? - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Can anyone tell me what makes it so good? Does it have any unique features or is it used for a unique purpose? I am currently looking for an OS for my desktop that I use primarily to watch movies and play music as well as download torrents. I like an OS that looks good too. Any friendly linuxer care to recommend anything?
- roostishaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you're using windows, you might want to check this out:

I've been using Dapper for about 2 months, and I love it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Doing a Dist-Upgrade as we speak. From 5.10 to 6.06, Upgrade Manager goes from... oh 17days to 96days til finished downloading. Looks like their servers are taking quite a hit. Thats ok, though, it'll clear up through the night.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can you resubmit it? Dug anyway seeing as all the damn flight releases made the front page.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This sounds like more of a problem with your laptop, not Ubuntu. Everything I use with ubuntu, including my D-Link 650 "just works"... pretty easily.
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's pretty great. Even technically released as alphas, my experience with the last two "Flights" have proven to be some of the most stable and relyable computing in my last few years trying out fresh distro releases.
- puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes install Ubuntu then install Automatix and you can play any media you want (not to mention the latest versions of key software like Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Wine, etc.). Ubuntu+Automatix is by far the easiest way I know to get Linux working into a cutting edge media playing machine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've registered on the forums (fantastic place to get info, by the way), but the blacklisting didn't seem to affect anything. I've read through the forums, and I can't seem to find any answers--a lot of people are having the same problem I am. I use ndiswrapper to load my bcmwl5.inf, it shows everything as present, but then the computer still acts like it isn't there. The bug reports affirm as much, but there hasn't been a fix yet that I can see.
- Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2when you say "with every apt-get", have you been doing dist upgrades?
if not do it, it may fix the prob
there could also be a problem resulting from having installed an earlier alpha version, installing the beta direct from image should fix everything - repawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can use a script called Bumps - does just about the same thing and is a bit more transparent than Automatix.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, Edgy by October? That's only 5 months, even if they release on the the last day! That's too bad, because it just means an earlier feature freeze, so fewer awesome things.
Then again, I could just do as I always do and upgrade to the next one as soon as it hits alpha. - treskel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1using breezy on the laptop, just put dapper yesterday on a destop at home, works like a charm. give it a few weeks and it will be as breezy, only better :) Dugg
- vassar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Automatix doesn't work with Dapper (would love an update!)
- thirdtenor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Can anyone tell me if this includes the latest ati drivers (8.24.8) with support for x1000 series cards? I am itchin to try XGL/compiz but dont feel like messing with a 1 week old clean and working debian/sid install on my laptop. TIA!
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's the announcement from the ubuntu-announce mailinglist: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2006-April/000065.html
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ive used flight 6 kde in vmware, its been great for the most part, i havent really had any trouble until i made some apt-get mistakes, i think i updated something i wasnt supposed to, and screwed it up, good thing its in vmware, but when it was running, it ran well, if i would have left it alone it would be great haha
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats high on the prioritylist
- Kvad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wpa out of the box by any chance?
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had the same problem as you, Berean. I have a WPC54GS card in my laptop, and upgrading to Dapper broke Ndiswrapper. However, I started using the new, built in method instead. And let me tell you, it's much nicer.
Here's what I did, from memory:
1. Removed Ndiswrapper.
2. Downloaded and installed some firmware extractor program from Ubuntu's repository, which took my bcmwl5.sys file and extracted it into a bunch of files.
3. Moved said files into /etc/firmware.
Then it worked, without any problems. And it has done so for a good three weeks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Traditionally, to install some package you would have to go to the command line and run a command. This is not easy for new users. gdebi comes to the rescue to solve this issue."
- jagnum1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, you might want to try EasyUbuntu. It makes installing the stuff you always need to install much easier by automating it. Very helpful, lots of options.
- SomeGuy6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also check out EasyUbuntu, does many of the same things, and works well with current Dapper and Breezy AFAIK. Safer than Automatix too.
- JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or just try this to update from Breezy Badger to Dapper Drake: gksudo "update-manager -d"
Warning! I just tried this and it worked fine. Too bad it is by far the longest upgrade ever. If you are fond of watching grass grow, this might be for you. Seriouslly, it is slow and I have a rather fast connection. - JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1downgrade
