- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I think you missed a few steps between 3 and 4. Like about 20, including getting your NIC, TV card & Wi-Fi working properly. Then fiddling for hours trying to get MCE to output 1080i on an ATi card. Then fiddling a bit longer to get digital audio happening, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.
- SamKellett, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Why? Mac's come built in with TV recording capabilities? Or do they boost a low-speed internet connection to a hight one?
- kotatsu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Fine except it doesn't stream live TV and the Xbox 1 is too slow for HD content.
- str3ama, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Ok, or you can do it this way:
Step 1: Go get an ALL IN WONDER (ATI) Video Card or similar type video card.
Step 2: Install card, and appropriate drivers (they're are Linux drivers out there as well)
Step 3: Use an S-Video out cable or RCA cable to hook your video card to TV.
Step 4: Enable video in on your computer (in setting/control panel).
Step 5: Go to any one of the following and you can now watch media 'streamed' from your computer to your tv:
http://www.freetube.us.tc - streaming (buffering :S) tv channels
http://www.tv-links.co.uk - tv episodes on demand
http://www.getdemocracy.org (app) - Videos/Podcasts App
http://www.joost.com (app) - TV shows and documentaries (requires invite)
http://www.thepiratebay.org - download tv shows/movies and you can watch them off your hard drive. - Ludnix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I don't understand your comment. Is that "not" unnecessary?
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Buried for having the name "Jesusgaytard"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5WTF??
The description of the article basically tells you exactly what to do. No need to actually click the story. - jonshipman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Maybe that's his real name?
- badtzmartin, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Why didn't they just call the article "Add A Capture Card... You'll Really Like It!"
Also, it assumes that the machine has either Vista or MCE. - z987k, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8do it even cheaper by using MythTV and don't pay for an OS!
- thespiff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah that article was pretty much lame. At the beginning it said "All you need is a tuner card!" Oh, but you also need an X-Box 360... And he made no comments about HD, or hard drive capacity, or how to actually wire it into your entertainment center.
- kurtwinter, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6***** LAME. This is like saying "how to give your car Ferrari like performance", as long as your car is a ***** Ferrari. If you have media center edition, and you need to read something to remind you that you indeed have media center edition, but you still don't use it, you're either lazy or stupid.
- thespiff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because you touch yourself at night.
- grivad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3All good...besides the fact that running your PC to a TV via RCA or S-Video will look like utter smeared ***** on your TV.
Good job. - swordedge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4No HD. I think I will wait to afford a small purpose built box like this one. http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=547
Too bad it's not out yet. - kotatsu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5And how exactly do you connect Linux MCE to a 360? And why is it so damn ugly? MS are not renowned for making pretty UIs, but Vista Media Center looks way better than this Linux attempt.
- str3ama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2not really, I mean it depends on the quality of the video. I would also add http://stage6.divx.com but the player is a bit buggy in firefox, but it's divx quality video and when you load that on your TV it's still going to be high quality.
- thespiff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The article is useless but there are actually some interesting/useful recommendations in the comments. They point out some software I hadn't heard about.
- NovaBandit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They failed to mention the DVRMSTOOLBOX addin for Media Center... AUTO COMMERCIAL SKIPPING!!!
- Antebios, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've been getting HD from Time Warner (now Comcast) using the set-top box's firewire port and any ol' cheap Adaptec Firewire card ($15) WITHOUT using DVHS for years. I cannot get encrypted HD (that's what the DVHS is for), but I get all other HD, including HBO HD. Too bad local HD is encrypted, YOU BASTARDS!. I have a Knoppmyth MythTV system with 3 STBs and a script to get the Broadcast connection working and I love it! There are quirks, but then that's were custom scripting comes in handy.
Knoppmyth R5F27 just got released this week. I already burned the CD, and will do an upgrade this week on the master backend and the client frontend. - scoot2006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1check out gbpvr (http://www.gbpvr.com) if you have windows xp (non mce). it's pretty sweet.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Buy a decent digital tv card and use the supplied Windows software. It will take you half and hour to set up. MythTV is a pain, the software is free but setting it up in Australia is a big pain in the butt. You need to buy the right hardware and do a software hack.
- Kratos76, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1Legal or not... just bittorrent? you're an idiot. This article is about how to get your media to play on your tv from your PC.
- 2gig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2or just pay DishTv or whatever the $9 a month for the lease on a dvr and free up your computer. Put this on here and you can't play Crysis and record an old MASH episode at the same time. Bottom line, sometimes dedicated machines do things better than making your computer do it. Your computer can make toast, if you cut slots in the top and add heating elements, then add a water cooling system to keep your computer cool while your toast cooks. or, you could buy a toaster.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Anyone with a Comcast Cable box and a firewire card can do that. I've been ripping HDTV with DVHS and a firewire card for years. Not quite as easy to use as Tivo but certainly cheap as hell.
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4But that's not legal. :( I know someone who got DMCA'ed for downloading stuff (e.g., Stargate Atlantis).
- Darcy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4When I first saw the UI for Linux MCE, I really thought it was a joke. http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Screenshots
You guys can't seriously believe that this is GUI doesn't ***** suck in the worst way possible. - rabidmonkey1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Except you do know it has a motion sensor remote to make the UI easy to use. Besides, Windows has had a couple of iterations to really mess up on. Linux MCE is only in its first generation. At least I know I'll never see the BSOD when I want to watch my DVD.
- graemee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It does for FTA - Free to Air DVB cards.
- benitojuarez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Thank you, I JUST bought that exact hauppage tv card on monday. It should be coming today or tomorrow. Cant wait to try this out.
- nanboya, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm assuming so, but does Vista MCE record to the proprietary MCE-format for recorded content? As in, I have to run that content through a 3rd party converter to get mpg/avi out of it?
- directsun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Kind of misleading because if you don't already have it, and you're not going to pirate it, Windows MCE could cost you quite a bit of cash.
- decker12, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'll stick with TVersity that runs on any old flavor of XP, takes little to no resources, is free, and works fine with my Xbox360.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0As long as you have the right hardware. MythTV is a pain to set up in Australia.
- willmaxx, on 12/12/2007, -0/+0After testing various TV software and visiting loads of sites. most of them offer a free trial or preview and then they make you pay to sign up, or are cluttered with ads. I think that is ridiculous... so ive done my research and have found a couple of really decent sites. The first one Id like to draw your attention to is (viewmy.tv) This site has almost 1300 channels from around the globe and counting. it is free to register and they dont ask for stupid details, just your username and email address. It actually streams live channels so you dont have to download any and they have a pretty easy way of finding the channel you want. You can search through genre, country, region or name of the channel. oh and there are no ads either. Check this one out. With over 1300 channels from hundreds of countries, loads of features like channel rating, user recommendations, live chat, profile pages and much much more.
- pcp777, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Title should have been:
"Turn Your Windows Media Center Edition PC into a Media Center Powerhouse On the Cheap"
That way I wouldn't have clicked on it. I don't have an XBOX or MCE.
Thanks for the time waste. - IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1TiVo Series3 can record encrypted HD content. Can this solution do that, legally or otherwise?
- Kuroneko, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1You could always use a MythTV based box. Simplier yet, one of the preconfigured distros like Knoppmyth or Mythdora to make it even simplier, and they support HD
- chumpsucker, on 10/10/2007, -12/+11You don't need to spend money on hardware! Just get yourself a bittorrent client and life will be good.
- paulsmith288, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0mythtv is so cool. My xbox works well with it
- lkowal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0too bad this don't work for "directv"
- Dirtynoodle111, on 10/10/2007, -10/+7All I'm gonna say is XBMC.
- spider418, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2With my Mac Pro I can do 8 moms!
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -6/+2Correct. (We would also have accepted MythDora, Mythbuntu, Mythbusters, KnoppMyth, or just simply MythTV.)
- dw2005, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Not unless you have a high speed Internet connection it wont
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Woopdidoo Basil.
- insanebrain, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1WHY ????
- rabidmonkey1, on 10/10/2007, -20/+9Step 1 - Buy computer
Step 2 - Format HD to get rid of that pesky windows!
Step 3 - Install Linux MCE
Step 4 - Bask in entertainment freedom!
