- WaveRunningNakd, on 06/30/2008, -1/+33i'd buy the service for nothing else than helping me to avoid all of the popped-collar d-bags in the area.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9Well, this is a little creepy. Be great for terrorist types looking for a likely target.
- xanadu2113, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9beware of the man's attempt to follow you wherever you go
- FLarsen, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8I consider your addition to this thread highly informative and will note it for later use. Your comment may be referenced later for informative purposes only. Thank you for your cooperation!
- glawky, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9it's like digg for cities
- spectrox, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Can the client remotely measure IQ as well?
- exabytes16, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5For lack of a better term, call it background noise. There's naturally going to higher numbers of these devices in apartments, condos, etc... this is the noise. If the number of devices is significantly higher than normal, then there's something going on there (i.e. twice the number of devices or a higher isolated density at an apartment might indicate a party). That exact use is probably not what they are aiming for though.
Honestly, I don't see how they are going to pull that aspect off. Now for traffic congestion... that's where I see the most potential.
I'm interested to see where they go with this. - mark076h, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4lol you better get used to it, this is just the birth of location aware applications and big brother....
- exabytes16, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Definitely. It's like high school. When people flock to a single point in the hallway, the deans/teacher know there's something going on (FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!).
- ZekeZacary, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5Now, were someone to throw the word 'government' before the title you would never hear the end of it. Isn't it nice how much a single quantifier can change the outcome of a reaction? Since the government is not thought to be involved though, everyone is okay with this data tracking tool.
- OWNAGETIME, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3This actually is one of the few Blackberry apps I'd really use daily if they of course came out with this for Boston....
also direct link to the site: http://www.citysense.com/home.php - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Douchebag schooling behavior begins. . .
- mark076h, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3this is really awesome stuff, i can't wait for the iPhone version, all of these location aware applications and social networks that are coming out for the iPhone are really fascinating
- reisrocks, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3it doesn't take this app to find busy spots on this planet.
- iet2004, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3how deep does it go? i mean...does it literally just show where a bunch of cell phones are gathered? How do you ensure that you're not following the route to an apartment complex or something where there are bound to cell phones stacked on top of each other (no pun intended).
It wasn't clear on how it differentiates, but I can only assume that by feeding the data to Google/Yelp the software cross-references the addresses it's finding gatherings out w/ known events that evening? - whyufail, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3I was gonna say it but you beat me to it. Well played.
- jaybol, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2awesome. coolest thing i saw today :)
- countmandible, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2If you're going to do it, let the phone user decide what's cool and where *those* people are. There was something like it for text messaging called 'dodgeball' I believe.
- johndavidjack, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2I'd rather just call my friends and ask them what's going on personally...
Seems unnecessary if you asked me... - ScottoGato, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3avoid or exterminate.
- surrealpath, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Wow, this is hands down amazing. Can't wait for the iPhone version. Tony Jebara was my professor junior year for an assembly language class at Columbia. Great lecturer, too.
- mark076h, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2they say they are going to add 5 more cities, i bet Boston is one of them, also i don't see why it cant be done anywhere just need to scale the hardware and database or whatever they need to do it's on their end.
- mehan, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3I hope it shows iphones as different colors or something, so I can avoid the places with higher than average concentrations of ifags.
- reisrocks, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1meatspace Digg.
Imagine if the whole city showed up at the same party :-/ - bizkit00, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3it's anonymous. If the govt was making it, it would have my social security number, blood type, recent recorded calls, and possible thought-crimes attached. If the govt wants to give me an anonymous night-life tracker, go ahead.
- drobb21, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1You make a valid point I guess, not to be all paranoid, but if you were looking at conducting a bombing or similar, knowing where there is the densest gathering of people could assist in targeting a site where the most damage/fatalities could be achieved.
- xero69, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I'm not sure I would like the invasion of my own privacy required to join in on the fun. Only a matter of time before "sponsors" are allowed to message you once you are in range of their business...
- benitojuarez, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I know everyone loves to hate windows mobile, but thats what my phone runs, 5 at that. I hope they keep us with the older phones in mind too. This looks like it could turn into something really awesome.
- maldovix, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1roar lions roar, for alma mater on the hudson sho-ore
- reisrocks, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1What?! You should get into script writing my friend.
I don't know which part of the world you live in, but just come and look at Picadilly Circus, London, England, on any saturday evening of the year.
There are thousands and thousands and thousands of people, you can't move.
Or Oxford Street on any day of the year.
These parts of the city are constantly at full capacity, so it's not about 'when it's the most full'. It always is.
Oh wait, maybe that's why it is where terrorist attacks have taken place. - bgfinkel, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ./ It’s a map!

It does open up interesting possibilities because now anyone that is carrying a cell-phone is the potential straw that broke the camel's back. It would be a different world where people were terrified that by just carrying their cellphone into a crowded area they might detonate a bomb. - mechanix22, on 02/19/2009, -0/+0Makes an awful lot of sense. Ive elaborated more upon it on my blog.
http://qwdsj.com - ccheath, on 06/29/2008, -5/+5Citysense is now available in San Francisco, with Chicago next on the rollout, followed by five more cities.
Works on Blackberry, with iPhone app coming soon. - vegetables, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Columbia's a great country! Good Choice!

- ccheath, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1thanks! this sounds pretty cool ... i hope it doesn't take too long to get to my small city
- dwninjungleland, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1When the terrorists get their hands on this app = game over.
- newstart, on 06/30/2008, -3/+1Wow, I am student of Columbia. This makes me so proud!!
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -5/+2FTA - "Gaining access to the hottest locales with Citysense involves a trade off for users: information on their own whereabouts is also fed into the system."
Not too sure I like that. Looks interesting though -
