- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I agree and disagree.
To people who know enough stuff about computers, DRM, computing freedom, etc......yes, it's not very good and extremely limiting.
To people who know nothing about that stuff at all.....Vista is amazing. - whereisian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22There is not a single reason in that list that can't be addressed with performance tweaking, third party apps or good computing habits.
- feaks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Of course it has "Improved Responsiveness" and "Improved Performance". The minimal requirements are also improved.
XP:
233 MHz minimum required
64 MB minimum supported
Vista (not premium):
800 MHz minimum required
512 MB - Bobalobabingbon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13@ tidu
Why dont you give us those reasons.... - BigCheeze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Interesting read, worth the time. I would say Vista is one of the least needed upgrades though from MS in a while. While they do add some nice features, things like Areo are too much of a memory/resource hog for just the OS. What about games? Looks like you really need a min of a 512MB video card (which of course all DirectX10 cards are), and 2GB of RAM.
Also big time disappointed in MS for not being able to include WinFS in this. That would have been a big reason for upgrading. - jetsetgo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Everyone of those reasons seem valid. However, each of those reasons also apply to Linux - without the software cost, and the cost of a hardware upgrade.
From my perspective, the only reason to upgrade to vista will be when software developers stop making software backwards compatible with XP.
Overall, if industry standard programs like 3ds Max, Maya, Macromedia Studio, and Steam applications were written for linux, I would abandon microsoft in a heartbeat. Those are the only things holding me back. - mlw72z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"With this product, you can enjoy a PC safe from malicious software, also known as mallware."
Mallware? Is that software you buy at the mall? - rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The only reason I would want to upgrade is DX10. All that other crap you can get from linux or OSX
- immort, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16Another reason to upgrade will be coz newer programs will be made with Vista in mind.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nah its stuff kids wear at the mall that they bought at Hot Topic, instantly making them 'different', 'unique' and 'tough'. Get your Slipknot/Coal Chamber mallware today with Windows Vista!

- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12your comment sucks, dugg down. Case closed!
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why did I get the feeling from RTFA that there were like three reasons that were rephrased to sound like ten.
Wow improved performance *and* improved responsiveness
Improved UI *and* Aero... - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8tons of drm!
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"which were supposed to have been covered in a previous article. "
or previous versions of Windows... - MaggieL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Gotta watch out for that "mallware". I guess that's software that you buy at a shopping mall.
I stopped reading after that sentence. - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11don't like this list. Didn't say anything about DX10. The second a DX10 game comes out I'm upgrading.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Kanna
The point he is trying to make is that Vista is supposed to be just an OS. It shouldn't have high system requirements. It should just exist to run/manage the hardware, without having to worry about if it will take up too many resources to use the rest of the machine.
Sure, you can turn the eye-candy off to make it run a little smoother, but the question is how well is it going to run? I'd like to see benchmark tests of some kind to show how well Vista does with all the bells and whistles turned off on an old machine. - TailGunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol I love how every comment bashing Vista has negative diggs. I see all the voters here are hot for M$...
- Fascist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Microsoft holds the personal and business software industry in a chokehold; if they upgrade, everyone else needs to follow suit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Did they steal this article from a recent issue of PC World?
"10. Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker
Windows Vista versions of Movie and DVD Maker applications allow you to import, edit, and manage digital home videos and they also support the new HD format. The Movie Maker helps you create and manage video files and movies. Windows Movie Maker gives you maximum choice and control over the quality and size of your video files when you are encoding. It has a wide set of effects, titles and transitions that you can apply. Once you are done making the movie, you can use the Windows DVD Maker application that comes with Windows Vista to transfer your videos to a DVD format."
Whoopdee doo. Any editor worth their salt knows the tools of the trade.
I wish Microsoft would stop trying to be bad at everything and just be great at one thing: operating system. Once you get that down, then start working on other applications FOR that operating system. - Bobalobabingbon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5good supporting evidence that vista sucks.
/sarcasm - dadx2mj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Interesting read, not sure I am ready to jump to Vista yet though
- mtgarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@rusty
What about all of the Windows AntiPriacy DRM? Like WGA which disables legitimate installs? My complaint is not with the HD-DVD or BlueRay DRM, but with the way MS treats me like a criminal. I do my best to avoid spyware etc... but if one slips onto the Vista box and changes critical settings, will MS consider me to be a pirate? Will I be forced to reinstall and/or buy a new license key?
Until these issues have been worked out by the early adopters, I will avoid this specific DRM. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Linux won't have Crysis 2. Biggest reason to not get Linux!
- stangy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah the "It suxs cause it has DRM" reason is getting old. There is so much FUD flying around on this from people who have no idea what they are talking about. Yes Vista has DRM but only for new media such as BluRay HDDVD etc... Microsoft would not be able to implement this stuff without it.
Now I hate DRM as much as anyone but lets pick the right battle here. For some reason these anti-MSFT zealots want to pile this in with the DRM problem. Maybe we should look at the right company for this.. I dunno.. maybe Sony? - adstretch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Braxo
i have 2 actually running stripped down XP and fedora core 4, and they serve all my web surfing needs, im not a gamer, i type documents and i check email and digg, my 400MHz P2 does that just fine. - CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I will upgrade and I think most people will/should. And I like Vista a lot, but I still think these reasons are lame as hell.
It seems like some old CEO wrote these.
Better accessibility... such my balls. Be specific. The fact that in Vista you can view slideshow or just watch pictures and videos from your digital camera without having to switch applications or anything is a good reason to switch. But these "better security," "better responsiveness" don't say anything, since they're so overused and vague. - goat2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so i suppose the only time a windows praising article is released, its gotta be in cahoots with microsoft themselves eh?
k by that extension then, any anti microsoft article is written by apple fanboys - stoppedcode12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course. When was the last time a public school had decent computers or decent computer upgrades for that matter?
- arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like a decent enough list - Even so, I think I'll hold back awhile and see what pops up on http://www.annoyances.org before deciding to rely on Vista.
I remember being quite wary & reluctant of switching from Windows 2k to XP, but once I figured out how to disable all the "foofy" XP features (Simple File Sharing, default network shares, Remote Assistance defaults, unneeded services, etc etc etc) it was a rock-solid OS.
My only complaint about XP was really the volume of unhappy 'Roxio Easy CD Creator' customers it generated - They'd come into the retail store where I worked in droves and throw fits about how 'Easy CD Creator' (which they'd bought or had bundled with a purchased CD-RW drive) was incompatible with XP. Thankfully, most retail CD-RW drive manufacturers began bundling Nero with their product shortly thereafter. - Rapishorrid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ feaks - If the OS doesn't make use of new hardware then what's the point of having it?
- cornfry182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this looks more like a marketing write-up than real "reasons". Half the reasons are just features anyway, which were supposed to have been covered in a previous article, and the rest are debatable.
Bleh - kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sorry but my Win XP Pro machine works just fine. I don't need the fancy, dandy graphic windows, etc. And if anything, I'll be migrating towards say, OS-X before I upgrade to Vista.
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5please, who has a sub 800MHZ computer still
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2" This isn't Windows creating something innovative, it's Windows finally catching up to the level of security, stability and ease of use that other OSes have had for quite some time. There are those who believe that Vista is a huge improvement, "
Unfortunately , for those stuck using Windows for the last ten years, finally catching up *is* a hige improvement - tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4They arent trying to make an Adobe Premiere replacement. They made it for the Moms and Dads out their who want to hook up their fancy camcorder to the PC and just get the movies on the PC and add a star-whipe here and there.
- BigCheeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's some more on WinFS... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinFS Good place to start.
- bart9h, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2haha! sheep indeed.
I couldn't have said better. - ms4winns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well the way i really see it vista is nothing more than a bloated operating system that costs a lot of money
windows xp users will continue to be supported for the next several years, so whats the point of upgrading?
most of the so called "features" of vista can be attained using 3rd party software in windows xp
i dont know about the rest of you but i even turn off most of the windows xp visual effects because they do nothing more than just clutter the system and slow it down
the thought that you need 2gb of memory and a 256mb video card to run an operating system? now that is insane... most games today will run on systems with much less than this
if you are a company in the hardware market, then vista is good for you, you will inherently make more cash as people run out to buy new hardware just to run this OS. however if you are a consumer then vista really has very little to offer. - wgchinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one who remembers similar printed articles on going from W98 to WinXP. Same reasons except for 7 and 10. Then we caught on and realized it was because the old dog was getting slower with age and because of the way it was designed. Then when we got the new puppy we had to retrain it and discovered all of its mistakes and realized the old dog wasn't so bad after all. Here we get comments that for all of the benefits of 1-6 we don't need to radically upgrade, but to get the affection of the new dog, we have to have more memory. Only in the reader comments do you hear about AACS and the scratching on the door again when things no longer work and how maybe the old dog isn't so bad after all. But if you wait the user community will come up with patches and 3rd party software to make it run the way it should have in the beginning. or am I repeating myself? Bottom line.... wait if you want to upgrade operating systems or get a brand new puppy that you will train accordingly over time to get all the love and affectionate you got from the old dog. When will MS realize that we and the old dog should be treated with the respect we deserve (and paid for).
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the "improved accessibility" bit uniformly fails in most *nix distros, except Ubuntu and more recent versions of Mandriva. Even with these two distros, accessibility is limited compared to Windows XP, though it beats the accessibility of 98SE.
Windows is the best platform for handicapped users. (That was #5 on the list.) - PueSi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Linux is great and everything but it has it's rough edges.
When i installed Ubuntu the thing wouldn't give me video, i had to search on google to be able to at least see the desktop.
That's unacceptable for something aiming to be a Windows replacement. - Elric1977, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have one reason to never use Microsoft ever again... I use OS X. That is about 500 reasons in itself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Talkin on the mom and pop level though. I don't think anyone I know uses VS for home use.
Got me on Office though. - DigitalPioneer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2New programs, my butt. Just get an emulator and use a REAL OS!
Buried as inaccurate: vista is a downgrade, not an upgrade.
As for DRM, vista was made for it, and NOT for the end user. Why don't you compare their EULA with the GPL some time, and you'll see what idiots you mi¢ro$oft fanboys really are! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2By doing that they contribute to the average users computer-stupid level.
I DUNNO HOW TO MAKE A WEBSITE SO I USE FRONTPAGE
I CANT USE PREMIERE OR OTEHR TOOLS SO I USE THIS CHEAP JUNK WMM
If someone was really serious about home movies or making a movie, they'd at least read up on the subject and self-educate and pick the best software for the job. Or, pay someone to do it right.
I wish MS would cut all this ***** out. Give us a barebones OS that works great, trim the fat. We could buy entire cows, but all we want is the premium meat. That's how I feel about OS anymore, BUT I don't want linux either. - rusty075, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Why is a retarded comment like this dugg up instead of buried?
Vista has new DRM for High Def DVD disks. And guess what, OS-X and Linux will have the exact same DRM restrictions for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD disks as Vista has. (and if there are third-party DRM-less players for Linux developed they will be available for Windows as well) If anything, Apple's DRM is likely to be even worse, given their track record.
Since I've been using Vista on my primary machine I've ripped and burned DVD's and CD's, shared recorded tv shows with other machines on my network, and generally done pretty much every bit of copyright-protected digital content swapping as any other user is likely to do, and I've yet to run into any roadblocks in Vista that have tried to stop me from using my data for whatever I want.
The Vista DRM scare is FUD, and nothing more.
Oh, and for all those who list "forced hardware upgrading" as an anti-Vista reason: Vista runs faster on my 1400Mhz AMD Geode htpc than XP does. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been running Vista for the last 4~5 months and it's most definetely better than XP, so the only real reason you wouldn't want to upgrade is the price, except in extremely unusual circumstances.
Everything feels speedier and snappier. The interface is better, overall, by quite a bit. It's Windows, so everything just works, unless you have some piece of ***** unreiable computer. Seriously, I run betas of everything, etc, and nothing ever crashes for me. ( Currently runing RC 2, Build 5744 ).
I didn't read the list because I've read a 100 of'em before and I've been running Vista myself for several months, so I didn't feel the need. But, unless you're poor, Vista is at least worth $200, $300 to upgrade to. And if you're gong to download it for free like most people ... you're crazy if you don't upgrade, if your system is ready for it. I have an Athlon 64 2800+ with 2 gigs of RAM and an NVdidia 6600GT ... everything runs incredibly smooth. - Stumblinforward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I for one am not looking forward to Vista, I know it will bring me more business (my wife and I run a computer shop building gaming systems and doing repairs) but i will wait for about a year or so as i did with XP and let them get all.. well most...ok some of the bugs worked out of it, it seems that is the time frame it takes for a new OS from Microsoft to get "stable", Some of the features look very interesting but i will wait and see.
